Mike, As my dad,grandfather and great-grandfather told me,do what works best for you and SAFE for you and those around you. One hand or two, do what you enjoy doing and as the situation dictates. Sometimes, you may not have a choice. I practice both ways and in different body positions. But,again that's my way. Just enjoy and be safe.

Mike, you made me burn my fried taters this morning. I put them in the skillet and went and cranked up the TV. There was your video so I started it. I got distracted. Also, your comments on one vs two hands hold is right on. I'm a CAS shooter and was shocked to see almost everyone shooting "traditional" when there is nothing traditional about shooting with two handed grip.

bibbyman2 after having a chain fire on a ASM 51 sheriff where 4 chambers went off I always shoot one handed. If I were holding it with both I'm sure I'd be short a finger or two

bibbyman2 Hey, I just said that! Yes, I was confused by cocking the SA with the off hand. CAS is speed focused and will do anything for it. If you shoot Gunfighter, that is more authentic.

Unfortunately the most recent rendition of this model, that I received Wednesday suffers some flaws. The grip which a lot of people complain about fully extends past the front of the grip frame by .051", it aligns on the back strap and bottom but not the front. It is like grabbing two knife blades with your fingers. I purchased this through EMF and have an email into them about the best way to reshape the plastic grips. This isn't the first Pietta I have noticed this on, it's just the most expensive Pietta I own and this feature is the most prominent on this gun. Wedge fitment is sketchy but will improve with use. I couldn't understand why the wedge was installed with a gorilla and a press until I got it out and realized I could not reinstall it all the way without the use of brutal force. It extends just far enough in for the spring clip to click in past the side but there is no extra protrusion of the wedge itself. Obviously with such a short lever the ramming effort is increased and unfortunately as well, either Pietta or SliXshot changed the dimensions of the SliXhand. It requires major modifications to make it apply pressure to the correct area of the loading lever. Right off, the loose rocking fit allowed for excessive pressure to be applied to the delicate locking latch, which is not designed for ramming pressures and ever so slightly bent. With much filing, grinding cutting and several re-fit tries I was able to modify it such that it activates the lever without putting pressure on the latch. I am currently working on my own version of a tool because I believe there is a better solution. I do agree it is a pretty gun and a fun gun to shoot and the gun arrived with enough protective machine oil in the plastic bag to almost create a small hazmat spill into the paper shipping materials. Going out to the woods shooting it again today.

I grew up reading Jon Sundras articles in the 80's and built a rifle in his 7JRS wildcat. He used Norma MRP powder in his loads which was not available here in Texas. When I could not find any published data I looked him up in the phone book in PA. talked to him and he worked up a load with IMR-4831 for me and yes called me back to give me the data. Great guy!

Mike, I've been shooting since I was 18 and a freshman at Ohio State, shooting Colt Match Target .22''s in the ROTC building... The first thing we were told is, "When you pick up any firearm, always assume it's loaded (even if you've seen someone else clear it) and then clear the piece. The second thing we were told is, "Always point your firearm in a safe direction." In other words, there's a lot to be said for chambering five rounds, resting on an empty changer because, if you do, and follow the rules, you'll never hurt anyone accidentally. I taught my 2 boys and my daughter the same thing. Love your videos, Mike! One question. Since they didn't have Slix nipples during the Civil War, did they also have a problem with cap jams?

Hey mr. Bellevue, why don't you have any flintlock pistols besides that peddo? When I first wanted to start making muzzleloaders I started making pistols because the barrels are much cheaper and the stock's come from my ex-wife's or eldest sons wood pile. I didn't have anybody around to teach me, so using less expensive parts made sense. Pistols are fun to make and the turn around time is a lot shorter. Thanx for your videos. Another great video Mike! Question for you on your 'ancient' Ted Cash capper. I have a brand new one and it just does not work well in seating the cap on my Pietta 1851 Navy (a straight capper doesn't work well either). It's difficult to get the capper onto the nipple, it seems as if there is not enough clearance around the nipple to seat the cap properly when the cap is in the grasp of the capper. I'm willing to try new nipples (maybe those SlixShots you've recommended, or do some work on the capper with a file or Dremel to remove some metal, if you've heard of that being done. I have another question. What do you think about using 1/4 cork as a wad in my Pietta 1861? This is all I have, unless I try to punch some out of 44 cal wonder wads.
@exexpat115 жыл бұрын
@@georgegooding57 Does Cork absorb Lube? Does Cork expand and contract due to moisture or temperature? Will a thin sliver of Cork stop an ember from Chain Firing the Cylinder? Would Cork leave fragments in the barrel breaking apart or would the Powder Load flush out the barrel? Would the Cork dropping to the ground cause a Fire Hazard more so than a Wad, Grease, or Cloth? Would this increase wear on the Rifling over time? Harder to clean after shooting? You don't want anything getting stuck in the barrel under pressure. I would say do some research with those questions.
