Geezer butler to me is the best bass player who has ever lived. I think this because when he plays with sabbath he can always come up with a groovy bass line for anything and he does it without showing off

Flatwound strings on any fretted bass guitar gets you closer. Not enough people focus on their amp; it’s SO much more important than your pickups.

Geezer himself used really dead RotoSound Swing Bass steel roundwounds when recording the first Sabbath album. They were about 10 months removed from new at the time, 'cos they were all broke as a joke then, and he also plucked them near or on the end of the fretboard.

Geezer's a bloody legend! He still looks a little bit evil while coming across as the nicest bloke. I'd love to have a few beers down the pub with him. His stories about 'iron bloke' and 'oh no it's..him!' etc. are just a crack up.He'd have ya in stitches! Oh and he's been a great bass player and lyricist forever.Since the dawn of metal i guess.What was before then?Nothin'! Or at least not much worth writin' home about.Anyway,Legend!

Love the way he plays but...... he doesn't seem to play like he did back in the 70's where he would smack the strings at the end of the fretboard. Thats where a lot of that classic Geezer sound comes from.

Alex Smart Yes, by all means, bury yourself in the mix with flatwound strings! What is it with you flatwound community activists anyway? Do you really find it necessary to give a flatwound sermon on every thread? To anyone who is a beginner bassist and is not familiar with bass strings: play a bunch of different types. decide which sound you like... and go with it. Don't let the Flatwound Preachers make you think there is anything special or cool about flatwound strings. Try them. If you like them, great. If not, get roundwounds or half rounds or nylon tape or whatever else. Find you OWN sound. There is nothing new or cool about flatwound bass strings--they've been around since the beginning of electric bass. They are just one type of many. It's just that in the last few years, anyone that has flatwound strings on his/her bass seems to think they've joined into some sort of quasi-religious crusade to make everyone think flats are something special. They're not. Get over yourself.

67NewEngland agreed 100%, what problems FFS.. If anything, this solderless installation could potentially cause more problems than the good old way (not necessarily of course). With all that being said, I still want to get a Geezer P for my Highway One, as it just sounds damn good. I have an SPB-1 and SJB-1 on my PJ and they're great and they're staying, but I wanna try something slightly different on my P. GZR seems like the best choice so far.

All the 'sounds like shit' guys are the same ones who complain that they 'can't be heard in the mix' on every bass guitar forum EVER. No one cares about your 'bedroom sound', and that kind of ignorant b.s. is why, in many sessions, the bass goes DI into the board - so that it can later be crafted into a good sound by someone who knows what the hell they're talking about!
@fullstop6078

For fucks sake. Ok, he played bass for Sabbath. Credit where credit's due. Personally I think Sabbath were fucking shit. Sabbath are Sabbath - let's stop talking about the 'individual' skill of ANY member. Jesus Christ - Geezers bass lines were fucking shite, musically, but they were 'Sabbath' bass lines,that's it. Any bass player that cites Butler as there hero is a SHIT bass player. Simple. Don't care. Geezer Butler is a name for a reason - Bass player for Black Sabbath. Imagine this - (Not that this would EVER happen in reality) Although it REALLY did in March 1978, in a small town near Birminham UK. It's hard to find the original transcript but this is some of it: Frank Zappa - hello geezer, play something Geezer - 'plays' eleven notes Frank Zappa - Geezer they weren't in tune or in time The Geeze - I thought that's what you like(d) Frank Zappa - I Like asymetric time signatures and 'feel'. The Geeze - Ok, I'll try it again, Frank Zappa - That was horrible. Geezer - Sorry. FZ - Fuck off Geeze, the geeze, whatever yo called. You know I don't like Black Sabbath. Ozzy was a shit singer but nicely out-there.
