at a bit over 14 minutes in you meant that supreme court justices are vetted meaning to review or consider. Also not sure where you got the idea that the US passes law's based on the president. If so this isn't entirely false but it's not entirely true either. The president can sign laws into place, however, if vetoed the law can be passed anyway even against the president's wishes. Also in terms of the electoral college. The college is made up of individuals which in theory apply their votes based on the majority outcome of each individual state, however, it is possible for individual electors to go rogue.

Just to add - bipartisanship is not that you need 2/3 majority for an amendment. It means that the constitution practically tried to force the two major parties to cooperate in order to come to an agreement which LEADS to a 2/3 majority vote.

I am at about 8 minutes in and you have done a pretty good job so far. That said I wish to offer a correction. With a few limited exceptions, there are ways for the individual states to avoid federal encroachments. As two examples federally marijuana is still illegal, without getting into too much detail the way the states which currently legalize it are getting around it is one way (it basically amounts to a protest of enforcement saying the federal government may enforce the laws if it so chooses but the state itself will not enforce the law). The legal way to go about it would be for the individual state to establish it's own version of the DEA with it's own laws rules and regulations. So long as there is no interstate trade in the substance there is no illegality. Like I said this is the REALLY simplified version. In terms of the clerk who was arrested again, this is more complicated than people realize. The clerk was actually arrested for not following state law, not federal law. In short, she was acting as a rogue agent of the state. If the state wished to avoid issuing marriage licenses to homosexual couples it could have easily done so by abolishing marriage licenses (something which no state is forced to issue). The federal government is only allowed to interfere in extremely limited cases. The states still retain the vast majority of their power, in many cases however the states have opted to turn much of their power over to the federal government, but they can still at any time choose to take that power back. They do not choose to do so however for numerous reasons.

Just for some more knowledge: the 14th and 15th amendments were frequently undermined, for example the 14th amendment was undermined through the SC hearing of Plessy v Ferguson in 1896 where they said black people should be "separate but equal" so it essentially supported segregation, this wasn't really opposed until Brown v the board of education in the 50s. The 15th amendment was undermined by various things like grandfather clauses and poll taxes which is more of a states rights issue I believe these weren't addressed until the 60s with the 24th amendment which prohibited poll taxes and the voting rights act 1965 which stopped discrimination in voting and the civil rights act 1964 which made people equal no matter their race, gender etc.

@29:34 you said both execs are in place through indirect elections - aren't presidents directly elected?
@EmilyPayne5 жыл бұрын
Kind of. Don't forget that the votes get turned into electoral college votes. This means that sometimes a candidate will not win the popular vote but still win the election (eg. Trump). However, it is true that the electorate votes directly for the President, unlike the UK where they only vote for MPs.

I've read through some comments and saw that you were rejected from Oxford. Honestly, don't beat yourself up about it - I know some people that looked like absolute shoe-inns for a place and didn't get it and also people who, in comparison, may have not deserved it. When you go to re-apply, I would make sure you reference your youtube channel as they love any 'optional extra-curricular' stuff that applicants do and if they see how much you have helped so many people I think they would be silly to not accept. Either way, keep your head held high; you're gunner do just fine in life :) Also what other A-levels do you do and what is the college you attend? does anyone know anything about the 12 marker that you have to relate to theories (rational, structural etc) im confusedddd
@MaybeSadie005 жыл бұрын
maybe_sadie hey we have the same name so i feel obligated to help 😂 so in all 12 markers you have to compare differences in the US and UK systems, the theories are what back up the points of difference. STRUCTURAL: basically how the structure of the 2 political systems creates differences CULTURAL: how existing traditions or collective groups/thought in each country create differences (e.g. the US culture is far more protective of their constitution than the UK) RATIONAL: i think this is the hardest one, how self interest or just logical outcomes as a result of each system creates differences honestly i wouldn’t worry too much about them. you only need to mention 1 in the entire question to get the marks for theory, and even if you don’t mention 1 you can still get a maximum of 9/12. if you’re gonna go for any i’d suggest structural it’s the simplest one 🤷♀️ hope this helps? EDIT: my mistake you can be asked both similarities and/or differences
