Today I'm doing a full Quantitative Reasoning (QR) subtest from the UCAT/UKCAT under timed conditions! I hope that anyone watching can get an idea of the strategies and thought processes I have while answering these questions and can get a better idea as to where you might need to improve!

Thank you for the Vid! For question 19 @5:37 how did you so quickly calculate the distance traveled in the 6 seconds? I cant wrap my head around it!
@EmilEddy
@EmilEddy 2 жыл бұрын
This is mostly experience but I know that if an object is accelerating uniformly for a certain period of time, the object's average speed during that period of time will be exactly half the final speed the object accelerated to (in this case half of 60 = 30). From there I can find the distance by multiplying average speed by the time. If that doesn't make sense, try drawing a velocity time graph for the car during that 6 second period. The distance that I'm calculating is the area under the graph for the first 6 seconds.

Hi again, Can you explain to me how you would calculate q 19 step by step without the 'shortcut method' of halving the acceleration for the speed. Thanks a lot
@EmilEddy
@EmilEddy 2 жыл бұрын
If you're using uniform acceleration, you can create a velocity time graph, which will be linear. The distance underneath it represents the distance travelled. In that case, you have the final speed, 60 plus the initial speed 0, divided by 2 to find the average speed over the 6 seconds. Once you have the average speed of 30, you just use normal distance speed time equations to find distance.

The main tip I have is to skip questions that are difficult at the start - which is what I did in this case. Another thing you can do is practice getting really fast with the calculator and doing more questions to understand how to isolate what calculations you need to do from the beginning.

@EmilEddy

At first, just spend hours doing untimed questions to build up your technique, then work on adding time pressure to the equation. Do one subtest a day and spend around 2hrs on it really focussing on getting the accuracy

Mostly it's because I've done a lot of practice and I know that I'll be able to finish most of what I need on time. The other thing I have to say is that I'm not actually doing the UCAT this year, so that does release a lot of pressure because the stakes aren't as high for me!

Could you please clarify why you used 30mph instead of 60mph for question 19. I know the keyword is 'uniform' but I still do not get it. Great video though!
@EmilEddy
@EmilEddy 2 жыл бұрын
I use 30mph because the car accelerates from zero to a top speed of 60mph over 6 seconds. Therefore the average speed during that time is just going to be (start speed + end speed)/2, which is 0+60/2 = 30mph. You're right in saying that the word "uniform" is what makes this true
@lingge7757
@lingge7757 2 жыл бұрын
In uniformed acceleration, D=1/2x(V1+V2)xT, D1=1/2x(0+60)x(6/3600)=0.05, D2=2-D1=1.95, T=D/V=1.95/60=0.0325hx3600=117s, 117+6=123
@gowrishetty5030
@gowrishetty5030 Жыл бұрын
@@lingge7757 You should use the average speed as that was what it was more or less going at through the entire 6 second journey and to find the average speed, when something accelerates uniformly you do the greatest speed (60) plus the lowest speed (0) divided by 2

15:43 Wow super smart working I wouldn’t have thought to approach this like that Is this something where you had done a question similar and so knew how to approach this particular question? This is what has been keeping me up at night, is that my iQ is not high enough to think of solutions like this and yeah fair enough I can just learn from my mistakes and not make that mistake again but is that doable for every single question they could ask me? Or at least for most?

You've answered your own question! The frequency is the number of times parked in that time period. 100 in the first row means 100 people parked for 1 hour, which is why you divide by the total frequency
