Charming how the people defending this film are those who have never lived in Latin America and have NEVER experienced its culture and traditions, let alone the real fear of drug trafficking, gangs, hitmen, or broad daylight robberies-something this movie treats as just another circus. Moreover, a French director (who doesn’t even speak Spanish or English) decides to make a film ‘based’ on drug trafficking in Mexico and completely avoids mentioning anything about the actual situation? That says a lot about the person in charge of this movie.
@July-ola6 күн бұрын
Same thing with Anora. They think throwing a controversial topic with an interesting director and good cast is enough to make a great film. Forget about the story, the authenticity, the meaning. Who do we blame this year? Streaming? Hollywood bribing? Because there are so many unknown films this year that are light years better than these embarrassing options.
@Fersh_166 күн бұрын
@@July-ola I completely agree with your point. It may sound simplistic, but there are culprits here. First, the filmmakers who create these empty, superficial movies, seemingly just to latch onto a social issue without truly understanding it. And then there’s Hollywood-the same system that applauds and rewards these hollow depictions of sensitive topics. It’s like a cycle. Hollywood loves ‘controversy,’ but only when it’s convenient and marketable. Instead of meaningful representation, they prioritize flashy narratives that grab attention, regardless of how poorly they portray the reality of the people or issues they claim to highlight. And the result is exactly what you said: forgotten films with real substance, pushed aside by mediocre ones with bigger budgets and louder campaigns. As individuals, it feels like there’s not much we can do. These types of films will keep being made, streaming platforms and studios will keep promoting them, and Hollywood will keep rewarding them. It’s frustrating, but at the same time, all we can do is look for those lesser-known gems, support them, and enjoy what truly deserves attention.

Dude, there are tons of movies about mafia. Which is a serious issue in Italy. I guess you enjoy them, while you complain about this movie, don’t you?
@Fersh_165 күн бұрын
@@lauretta90100 Exactly, there are tons of mafia movies, and many of them are widely praised. But here’s the key difference: most of those films-The Godfather, Goodfellas, Gomorrah-approach the subject with depth, research, and a critical lens. They don’t shy away from showing the consequences, the cultural context, or the human cost behind these criminal systems. They don’t reduce it to a caricature or make a mockery of it. Now let’s compare that to Emilia Pérez: a musical with mediocre performances that takes a deeply sensitive issue-narcotrafficking in Mexico-and trivializes it without any real understanding or respect. It treats a horrifying reality for millions of people as a flamboyant spectacle, ignoring the fear, pain, and violence that come with it. If The Godfather or Goodfellas had been a comedy musical with shallow characters and no attempt to understand Italian-American culture or the mafia’s socio-economic context, they wouldn’t be remembered as cinematic masterpieces-they’d be a joke. That’s exactly what’s happening here: a serious issue turned into a punchline, stripped of any authenticity, and marketed to people who don’t know or care about the realities it claims to portray. The problem isn’t the topic itself; it’s the lack of responsibility and effort in handling it. If a film doesn’t respect the culture, the context, or the people affected by the story it’s telling, then it has no business pretending to represent them.

This film is not even half as good as its competitors, they are ignoring many excellent works to award a project that did not even deserve to be nominated, it is an opportunistic film, full of stereotypes, completely uninformed of reality. It is disrespectful to the culture that inspired it. These awards have lost credibility, how awful!

This winning is the equivalent of someone who just went into a Taco Bell and gets out telling us, Mexicans : “Go check it out, you gonna find the hard shell tacos full of crunchy and fresh lettuce with a sprinkle of a delicious yellow cheese; and if you don’t like crunchy stuff then try the soft tacos! Wrapped in a soft flour barely cooked tortilla fill with a watery paste made of some ingredient looking like ground beef” The French director is a BIG ¡D¡OT - Emily in Paris much 😂

I mean i'm sorry to say this but this film will win and have a happy award season just because they have a trans and they will make anti -trans if we hated the film or said anything about it but this is not the case this film is really not great it's solid but it's an award worthy and definitely doesn't deserve the smell of an oscar even zoe Saldana i'm sorry to say this i love zoe but not for this clearly they didn't get anything right in that script nor about Mexicans or Mexican culture or trans themes and really developed characters like WHAAAAAAT he was a drug trafficker doing this shit for people and then when he became a woman he became sweet and an advocate i'm sorry I don't get this and SELENA GOMEZ girl please stay out of cinema you don't sound CINEMAtic nor you have a voice i'm sorry but she never was someone talented

I am mexican and I don't feel insulted. Everybody knows we face a terrible situation with druglords and stuff but we are also known for our beautiful traditions and our kindness, etc. This is just a movie that was made to entertain. This movie just does not deserved to win period.

I understand the upset but that’s the point you don’t get, most people in the world and award voters watched the movie with subtitles and it made perfect sense in eng? It was beautiful visually, had a message, got political points.
