When I was 17 I needed a one-year visa so I could come to America as a foreign exchange student. I had to answer all these questions online, before I was invited to the embassy to get the actual visa. They ask you all these questions about whether you have had any problems with the police and such, which I guess is fine... it's possible to find out. BUT then they ask you "Yes or No, are you a terrorist?" Who the hell is going to admit to being a terrorist? I wonder what happens if you say yes as a joke. Maybe you'll get kidnapped and taken to Guantanamo. O_o

You have an interesting observation about celebrities since most of them - if not all of them - live a life that doesn't really connect with the general population. I am old enough to have witness the huge shift between the lamba people and those celebrities between the 60s and now, when they were the real spokemen of major social issues to the point goverments were almost afraid of them (Lennon for instance). Now, they are totally harmless in every sense, just funny for fans.

noticed how nobody laughed when she said that British are better? I mean c'mon America, you can laugh at the whole world but when someone makes a joke about you it's not funny anymore? grow up!
@konczk8 жыл бұрын
+zoodiac57 As a rule, Americans don't get satire. It's a cultural thing. They tend to take it literally. Just look at the comments where most Americans thought she was actually serious about that and the dead silence in the audience. The American author Bill Bryson lives in the UK largely because literal-minded Americans never get his humour, whereas Brits do. Also witness the Butthurt reactions whenever Ricky Gervais makes a satirical joke about a celebrity.
@jamesmartin94016 жыл бұрын
They didn't hear it. There was residual noise on top of it.
@jackster12126 жыл бұрын
@@konczk Oh c'mon now, Christian. That's like saying all Brits know how to make in the kitchen is vegemite toast and tea. I'm American and I laughed when she said it. Yeah, I laughed at Benny Hill years back but also Monty Python. I love P.G. Wodehouse. But I also got a kick out of Withnail and I. This idea that Americans don't have a sense of humor or satire and irony or the ability to be self-deprecating is a worn-out old trope that, in my opinion, most of the time is the refuge of a Brit who's failed to be as funny as so many of his otherwise brilliantly witty countrymen. Sure, there are some of us that don't "get it" when a subtle joke gets floated. But there are dolts like that in every demographic. At the same time, plenty of U.S. entertainment thrives in Britain, just as lots of 70s British television had a solid U.S. fanbase decades earlier. Time for that stereotype to be retired.
@jackster12126 жыл бұрын
And P.S. to that, I think Ricky Gervais is a genius and always have. The same for Stephen Merchant and Stephen Fry for that matter. But I also love Bill Bryson and count his Short History of Nearly Everything as one of the top 10 non-fiction books I've ever read (it's much better than his book about Britain, by the way). And again, I'm from Philadelphia.

+Christopher Morris I find that to be rather silly, particularly the "with us or against us" thought. I don't think I'd renounce an allegiance just to prove that I'm not an enemy.
@Freeden9 жыл бұрын
Christopher Morris It's not really the same. And I don't think people who come here have to renounce where their from. I don't really get the stabbing in the back issue. How does an average person "stab" America in the back? Say, for example, you come from Canada. Is it really imperative that you renounce being a Canadian? Like I said, it sounds too identical to when they were making Japanese in this country renounce their allegiance to the Emperor in Japan, even if they had no allegiance. It's archaic. If they're coming to this country to be citizens, they obviously want to be Americans. I get security concerns, but we already have ways of handling those issues.
@Freeden9 жыл бұрын
Christopher Morris That is why there is such thing as dual citizenship.

+Freeden As an Englishwoman it makes sense to me that you would renounce the monarch to become an American citizen. Emily Blunt is a national treasure, and now she's OUR national treasure. Well, we're splitting custody with England.
@andys48704 жыл бұрын
As a brit, I've got to say, she will never be American to us, not even semi american. She just wouldn't be Emily if she were an american (by blood) part of what's so great about her is just her perfect britishness, but it's great that you guys like her too.🇬🇧
@DipayanPyne4 жыл бұрын
@ Andy S There is no such thing as British or American or Canadian or Italian or whatever by blood. Or well, there should not be. It used to be, but if we continue with such an understanding, it will just keep the world racist. Also, when it comes to Americans, most of them are descendants of Europeans. So, the 'by blood' argument really fails, when comparing Americans with Europeans. Lol.

+J.S.G. L What an unintellectual point to make. In the republican presidential debate that happened recently, Trump clearly stated: "Build a wall, so foreigners can't cross the American boarder illegally. I don't care if there is a big beautiful door in the wall, so foreigners CAN come here legally" Trump isn't against Mexicans, just illegal ones.
