Thank you for a most remarkable analysis. My interest in Dickinson started while I was watching the phenomenal film .... " Sophie' Choice ", starring the amazing Meryl Streep. While recovering from her illness, Sophie goes to the library and asks for a book of Emily Dickinson's poems....in a Polish accent. The unfriendly and impatient librarian hurriedly informs her, and insists, that she means Dickens, after which she faints. This scene stuck in my mind and off I went to the library and got out a copy. So glad I did. This is one of my favourite poems but I never realised that it worked on such a deep level. There is certainly more- much more- than what meets the eye. It is truly an extraordinarily powerful painting.

I teach 4th grade, and this is one of our required poems for memorization. Thank you for sharing this information. It will provide so much more meaning to the poem for my students (and me, too!).
