I agree with you: She was heavily influenced by her environment. She loved Richard, their house, their money, their life, but she was also trapped in it, having to fulfill the role of an old money/high society woman. She sacrificed a lot of her natural wit and extroverted nature for it, which is especially visible in her relationship with both Lorelai and Trix. I believe she thought that would be the best option for her family overall. I love how she became more aware of her shallow perspective later on, and the ending she got was a perfect wrap-up of her character growth. I love her, but she could truly be cruel sometimes!

it made no sense to me why emily would reject luke in the way that she did when he and lorelai started dating. She was one of the first people in the series to call out that he liked her and didn't seem the least bit disgusted by it, and by the time they started dating she had met luke more than enough times and was not nearly as harsh on him. I don't think she would be overjoyed or anything but she definitely would have not been as angry about it as they portrayed her to be.

I think Emily was the best Gilmore Girl. Yes she was flawed but she grew and changed and when something didn’t go as planned she picked herself up and took the struggle and used it to her advantage when Lorelie and Rory never really changed and would break down or cry whenever something didn’t go there way and run back to Emily. Not to mention the fact that she’s self made and independent like Lorelie but also recongnizes her privileges and cares for her family while Rory didn’t realize her privilege and loralie didn’t realize her effect on other people .

Now, if you're referring to the image and reputation she developed for herself and the Gilmore name, I can kind of see where you're coming from. But, even still she is not responsible for the entire recognition of her name and the Gilmore name. For her name, that is in part due to Richard given that so much of her success was linked to being his wife and related to his contacts. For the Gilmore name, she played a role but she didn't shape it. After all, she married into it.

Honestly, Emily is my favorite character out of the three Gilmore Girls, that's very ironic because she reminds me a lot to my grandmother, who's also a very conservative person who needs to constantly be proven to others through her "class and elegance", she didn't come from money but damn does she learnt to spend like she did, she married for money and she got an scholarship in a rich kids catholic school when she was young, so she is friends with a lot of rich and snoby ladies and likes to run in those circles I don't talk to her anymore because she's too clingy even if she wants to pretend that's not the case (and also because for her I am some kind of disgrace for not being like her), and because she's manipulative and a total liar when things don't play in her favor. Maybe why I like Emily so much is because she could outgrow some of her flaws just as I wished my grandmother could have

Emily was an emotionally abusive parent, which deeply affects Lorelai's decision-making, but Lorelai couldn't easily or fully cut Emily out of her life. And I agree, Emily did grow over time: she tones it back as that fear of being abandoned by Rory and Lorelai (again) kicks in. Naturally, she capitalizes on the rift between Lorelai and Rory when she drops out of Yale, but overcompensates with Rory. Rory is given food, water, shelter, but the kind of emotional support she needs is not given (just like teenage Lorelai); Emily tries to be supportive, but she cannot be the harsh parent, this time around. So Rory continues spiralling, even when logically, she shouldn't and even when Emily truly wants to help. Emily's an infinitely interesting person, but still at the end of it all, a person. Her flaws keep her realistic and human, for we really do meet characters like her in life, passive-aggressive and driven to resist resolution. To me, she's a reminder that some relationships can't or shouldn't be mended; that's what makes her so compelling, regardless of if she ever changes.

also one thing that always bothered me is how SHE was always painted as the villain but Richard wasn't???? even though the moments in which she was happier and less controlling and manipulative, basically the moments when she had a pretty decent relationship with lorelai, were the moments richard wasn't there and she didn't have to be the "perfect corporate wife" (i.e. when they were separated and after he died, or just some moments when he wasn't present). and although there was obviously part of it which was just her fault, Richard and his family (after all, he's the gilmore, not her) also had a BIG influence on lorelai's trauma and her rough relationship with emily. one example of this is when, after richard's death, lorelai is unable to think of good memories she had with him (she's only able to think of ONE after like, months). and if you try to find happy moments between lorelai and emily you can find quite a few just in the show, and I assume there were some when she was younger as well, and in none of those (the ones that appeared on the show) richard is present

This story, to me, is about the generational issues most families face. The parents are born post WWII and are growing up in a prosperous more conservative time. They have money and societal position. Lorelei is born in the 60’s the time of women’s movement, civil rights, hippies, etc. They didn’t understand each other. Rory gets caught between both worlds but is the bridge. The story would be nothing without the conflicts and, finally, resolution in the end. I don’t see any of them as evil villains. The writers did a brilliant job combining deep subjects with lots of humor and pop culture. Even the music the 3 generations listen to is very telling.

For me the most telling Emily moment was when Lorelei helped her do some accounting. They share drinks have a few laughs and for the first time interact the way Lorelei and Rory did all the time. The next morning she turns cold and distant, disappointed in herself for being her daughters friend for that brief moment. Emily isn't evil, just adamant there is a right way to be a wife and mother. Her arc across the show is slowly understanding how wrong she is and accepting her daughter for who SHE is.

I love Emily as a character. She is definitely not always a likeable person. But it does mostly come down to the fact that she fits into her societal role very well and always has and never wanted anything different, so she truly can't imagine someone being satisfied with something different. She can't quite believe that Lorelai (or anybody) can really live her best life and be the best version of herself unless she follows the vision Emily imagined. But we do see many times that she does truly love Lorelai, even while she's incapable of relating to her. I have a similar relationship with my own mother. I think many of us do. 2 things about Emily 1. I think it is very intentional, that in this show that focuses on mother-daughter relationships, Emily's mother is barely mentioned in the series, maybe her dysfunctional relationship with her own mother prevented her from learning how to connect with her own daughter, so she always treated Lorelie as a servant, a pet, or a doll 2. I think Emily wasn't born rich. There is not too much information to go off of, but in the revival the shirt that Lorelei wore in that memory where she was made fun of at school was from her maternal grandmother and it had sequins, which is way too tacky for some one of Emily's socio-economic class to wear. And maybe part of the reason she was so anxious about Lorelei's behavior was because she was afraid that if Lorelie didn't act conventionally upper class than she would be revealed. It might also explain partly why the original Lorelei thought Emily was beneath Richard. It might be the reason Emily was always so harsh on her maids, because she was insecure about how stable her rank on the social totem pole was and so she kept punching down on something that had a lower social class than her. And maybe the reason her best friend was Sweetie was because she liked her for also being from a family that had to climb their way up.
@favoriteemail3 жыл бұрын
I think Emily did come from a privileged background. It's interesting that we have scant detail about Emily's upbringing, but we do get some. Emily went to Smith College, a private women's college in Northampton, MA. While it's possible she attended as a financial aid student, it's more likely that she and other women attending in the late 50's/early 60's were from wealthy families. When she reminisces about when she got married, she notes that her mother had seamstresses working day and night on her wedding dress. She also talks about accidentally running into Richard at their club before they got married. During Rory's coming out event, she's horrified by the flowers and tablecloths that were much more elegant and high-class in her day. That said, I suspect she came from a family of means, but perhaps not one that had as much money as Richard's family. I would guess that's why his mother looked down on Emily. We saw this with Rory and Logan's family - this idea that the wealthy have a pecking order based on net worth.
@PhilospherDjPsychologist242 жыл бұрын
@@favoriteemail Well, while I would like to challenge some of your points, one of the main reasons why I think Emily came from a family that had known poverty at some point, like with Sweetie, was because it was meant to mirror Rory. By adulthood she was about upper-class, and most of her adolescences was middle-class, but her early childhood at the inn should be classified as her being lower-class. Rory puts a charming spin on it for her grandmother, but her childhood room in the shed, the one with a bathroom without walls, was not that far above being homeless. I alway kind of suspected that part of the reason Rory was so well read was because they could not afford tv or other forms of entertainment, also out of a class insecurity to come off as more classy, and that desire to go up a class through academia might have been part of the reason she was so driven in the first place. I think that her inability to break up with boyfriends comes from her erratic-poverty early childhood which gave her a deep need for stability that a constant boyfriend would give her. I guess this is all conjecture. But I thought it would have been cleverly written in theme with the show, about how your upbringing can hard wire you in ways that effect the rest of your life. And as an important statement on class, where you don't know what some one's journey through social mobility has been, or how what counts as upper class is just what can pass as upper class

What I can appreciate most about Emily is that she genuinely loves Lorelai. From the beginning, all she wants is to spend time with and be closer to her and Rory both. She goes about it in very unorthodox and even cruel ways at times (which is inexcusable), but I think growing up in such an uptight world where she was practically forced into the life she has, she didn't know how to show warmth or how to react when Lorelai chose something else. Emily actually steps out of her comfort zone quite a bit to have a relationship with her daughter. I understand why Lorelai needed boundaries--I absolutely think she was justified in setting a lot of them--but I wish that she wasn't so black and white in the way she approached her relationship with Emily. Lorelai is weirdly dependent on her relationship with Rory and almost gloats over how special their connection is without giving her mother a chance to change and have a different but also special connection. I don't know... It just always seemed like Emily was at least trying and Lorelai never was.

I think the reason why I like Emily is because she genuinely tried. She often didn’t understand and couldn’t get along with Lorelei a lot of the time due to her own bad actions, but throughout the whole thing she was always trying with Lorelei, throughout all the arguments and difficulties and pain when it comes to Loralei, she never failed to at least try to bring them together, so I think that her issues weren’t because she’s a bad person, but because of likely her upbringing and what she was taught is the right thing. That’s the reason I never liked Richard, they both have the same anger but he never put in any effort with Loralei at all.

I loved Emily Gilmore. She was mean at times, but she REALLY did care a LOT about Rory & Lorelai, and DID want the best for her... flawed as she was... and her growth and change over the series was great- and the ONE good thing in the "Year in the Life" hot mess.
@NeverlandSystemKitten2 жыл бұрын
@Gul Tengiz Oh certainly Lorelai was a difficult child. She was a rebellious soul seeking to find her own identity and way- apart from the confines of an inherited identity. That is one of the most respectable things about her, and the other is that she eventually comes to understand and respect her mother's position as well - and eventually makes amends (one of the few good points of the generally TERRIBLE revisit Netflix mini-series). Unfortunately, the doting and privilege Rory experiences ruins her- sadly an entirely common and believable story typical of her generation.

I am quite conflicted about this analysis of Emily Gilmore. First and foremost, I love Emily because she was a true natural savage in all aspects. What I do wish you pointed out is that the other Gilmore girls acquired many of their strong, stubborn leadership skills from Emily. In my opinion, Lorelai learned how to manage an inn from how Emily managed her home, and that passed on to Rory as well. They have different styles of leadership, but the strength and creativity came from Emily. On the other hand, Emily was not perfect, but what human being is. And finally, I think this character analysis drops the ball by omitting one of Emily's major character foils - Lorelai running away from home. If you watch from the perceptive that Emily never moved past Lorelai running away, you would notice that Emily was constantly being driven by the belief that she lost her daughter at 16 and was doing everything she could to avoid a repeat with Rory. Rory was Emily's second chance at being a mother and can we really judge her for that?

Emily's background is never discussed. We assume she came from money then she married Richard. Some pieces of her younger days were talked about, but we never see her parents. She doesn't talk about them. She attended college. But never worked . Only had functions for the DAR which she was President of. I only say this because if you can know more about her childhood, then we could understand more about her character and why she maintains what she believes is proper.Dating, Engagements, Weddings. Parties( candles must be six inches apart) She has a continuous parade of maids and servants. They do not live up to her STANDARDS. Same thing with Lorelei not living up to her STANDARDS. Narcissistic? Perhaps. Why is this so important? I often wondered what her parents were like.
@kate2create7382 жыл бұрын
It’s funny how smug Emily is yet we all eventually learn to appreciate her character, we might like to interact with someone like her. But out of the 3 Gilmore girls, she actually was the one who made the most improvement and character growth. Also while Lorlei was successful in the small business aspect, I think that she had her faults specifically with her relationship that should prevent her from having the successful title. The funny thing is to the average person she seems like she is successful, to Emily and Richard, they’re probably puzzled with that aspect when they practically have an empire lol. What I think makes Emily actually successful is not the status, nor the image she tried to live, but that in the last show she was finally embracing a part of herself that held her back from having a healthy interaction with others. It’s that part that, while a diva, has gained some true respect as a character.

@chocofudge19322 жыл бұрын
I think her biggest flaw was that she thought that whatever she deemed was best for her family was also what everyone else should deem best for her family as well... but she did overcome that slowly in the series and the reunion and that's why i love her. also she's a very complex character and we only get glimpses of how she regrets her own and others' decisions. that's what makes her so compelling and worth talking about - Emily is shown to us, she isn't completely narrowed down. Her character, decision making and actions leave room for interpretation, and ultimately, that's what good storytelling is all about.
@chocofudge19322 жыл бұрын
also it seems pretty telling that Emily's biggest character growth starts after Richard's death. I did like Richard, but seeing how Emily branched out and blossomed after his passing was a testiment to her prior confinement. They did love each other. But due to old-fashioned beliefs they both held up, their marriage helped in making her miserable, bored and a bit cruel I think
@DonnaTriska2 жыл бұрын
I think Emily was a vengeful narcissist. It was made clear throughout the show that she disapproved of her daughter. She tried that with college aged Rory from laying out her clothes to being mad that she didn’t get to inspect her before a DAR event.

There was possibly a bit of scandal from Emily basically stealing Richard from his fiance, Pennilyn Lott. Also might be partly the reason why Trix was so disapproving of her.

…not being mean (its hard to convey that over a message..) but I disagree with “Lorelai is healthy, Rory is healthy” you don’t have to have a disease to be “unhealthy”. They eat like shit there eating is actually repulsive. And mentally they both are unhealthy they don’t know how to process anything that goes wrong in their lives and majority of the time are not very good friends or significant others, because they only think of themselves. Emily may be a bunch of bad things but one thing good is she is aware of the fact that they both are not “healthy”

@Someone 333 first saying that is very rude to everyone dying of a “sick body”. But it also goes against the point in the video…implying that Emily would have a right to treat her that way if she were actually physically sick.
@reginadanielle37553 жыл бұрын
For me Emily wanted Lorelai to have the best so she showed Lorelai what was taught to her growing up and Emily don't understand Lorelai so she tries to push it to her. her being strict I think is her being a mom. I mean look at Rory she got a mom who was more of a best friend that an actual mom always praised by her mother never corrected properly for her faults, while watching the show Lorelai always sugar coats and was never really franked with maybe because she know Rory wouldn't take it well. Honestly out of all of them I think lane's mom was the best, because Mrs. Kim know that if she lets her child get liberated in a young age there would be a different belief and set of values that lane would learn and when she said that one time about how America's values were different I completely understood where she was coming from. the 3 mothers have different parenting styles but I think the best was with Mrs. Kim's she slowly let go of lane as she gets old and I think that is what a parent should be. to build foundation and let go.

I think Lorelei lived a fancy life and grew up having anything and everything and grew into a rebel life and ended up pregnant and with Rory she grew up poor and having enough compare to Lorelei. While I do agree with all of the points you made in this video, it’s the small things about Emily that bother me. Like whenever someone else is talking to her or even while they’re arguing with each other, she doesn’t listen to a single word they say and always interrupts them. Or when she forces Lorelei to attend things without even having a proper conversation with her. It’s so impolite. Which bothers me even more because she takes pride in calling herself a respectable, proper, and therein polite woman.

My theory is that Emily though she was born to an old money family they are known to be quite eccentric. I remembered that Richard telling Emily that she must have gotten the mental illness of her family in a middle of an argument which Emily replied that her relative Aunt Coral doesn’t have any mental illnesses instead she is just athletic. Also I have to mention she has a sister name Hope who lived in Paris France. We never really gotten to know much of Emily compared to Richard what I mean is her family and her relationship with each of them but here is my analysis of her relationship of her relationship with her relationship with given evidence in the show. Emily is probably embarrassed of her family because of their eccentricities and constant scandal although she is embarrassed about them which is probably why she even cut them off from her life when she married Richard and gotten into the Gilmore family. She still loves and cares for them cause she even defended one of her relatives which is Aunt Coral. Now as for her sister Hope since she had acknowledged her and even talked about her living in Paris probably she remained somewhat close to her sister though does not approve of her lifestyle. The reason why I decided to make that statement it’s because she was never mentioned again and we never even heard of her or if she had a husband or any children so probably she decided to not follow suite of her sister and instead live and Paris and stay single. Probably the other reason why we never heard of Hope it’s because she is probably deceased. Maybe that’s why Trix doesn’t like Emily cause of her background and not only that but it was mentioned that she broken up Richard and Pennilyn Lott who was engaged. Trix hates scandal so this probably makes Trix even despises Emily cause like her family they are known for scandal. Maybe Lorelai and even Rory got their eccentricity and their scandalous nature from Emily’s side of the family.

Emily was both complex and completely one-dimensional. She existed in a space where class and association were paramount, but you OFTEN (especially in the later series) see her come out of her shell and adapt only to quickly revert to the comfort of her social standing which obviously caused a lot of hold and cold with her daughter.

I think Emily’s actions can be much more justified than Rory’s because Emily’s actions couldn’t have gifted growth for her because of her environment that she had for 50+ years. Rory had it on and off for like 6 years and she could’ve grown from it so much more than Emily.

Emily is, in my opinion, the result of a good person who is nonetheless the product of her upbringing. She IS NOT a good person, but she has all the foundations to be one. She is simply a strong example of nurture overtaking nature, and the way she was reared was plainly toxic. She is a deeply flawed person and there's no denying that, but that's what makes her one of the best characters in the show.

Ok I love Emily as a character but definitely not as a mother or person overall…she was very manipulative controlling & abusive…she was extremely passive aggressive & uncommunicative in general…she & Richard hated that Lorelei wasn’t just like them so they tried to mold her as such with cold behavior & when things didn’t go their way they made it explicitly clear what a disappointment she was…they never let it go that she got pregnant @ 16 & ran away from home even after the fact was discussed ad nauseam… they constantly belittled her & criticized her but wondered why she didn’t want to be around them & it drove me nuts that everything they said & did was right but Lorelei & Rory would react to their atrocious behavior & they would demand respect followed by an immediate apology even when one wasn’t necessary…& the constant GASLIGHTING…I never heard an “I’m sorry” come out of their entitled mouths the entire series yet Lorelei & Rory apologized profusely if only to keep the peace…not that they lacked in fault but it makes me insane how unaware Emily & Richard were throughout the course of the series…they outright REFUSED to meet their daughter halfway & it doesn’t even seem like she received any sort of affection (especially from Richard) who heaped it on Rory so generously…yet they & the fandom expect Lorelei to carry the relationship & fix it all by herself…grrr

@Yume032 жыл бұрын
To me Lorelai wanted to be seen and heard by her mother. And she very rarely was. Emily wanted her to be like she imagined her, instead of getting to know her child. She wanted control to the point of emotional manipulation and blackmail. She was a very flawed parent who really needed therapy to work on her issues. Lorelai is definitely not perfect either, having the childhood she had and the fact she needed to grow up quickly to raise her kid. But she was very justified in many angry outbursts she had. Anger shows when your boundaries are crossed. Emily constantly crossed boundaries without even noticing she had. She was very willfully ignorant of her daughters wants and needs. She projected a lot on her without asking. Their relationship is fascinating bc that dynamic is very common among many real life families.

I personally find Emily one of the most entertaining characters on gimore Girls, but I also recognize that she's emotionally abusive and kinda awful in general.
