So... I live in an undisclosed location that us geographically close to Paris and am not a native nor fluid French speaker. I've been to Paris as a kid twice, but as an adult, I really want to go back bc there's a course I wanna take there. I've been worried about how I'll come across and about being insensitive or clueless. But now I no longer worry. Because compared to Emily, I think I'll be fine. 😌

I worked with Patricia Field for 4 years, multiple seasons of NYFW, my photo on here is actually a campaign shoot from Valentine's day. Even years ago during the first season, Pat's mind wasn't the best, and she was considering retirement. She has two dogs which she loves very much, they were at the studio with her every day, and they both began mentally declining together, and it seemed like she had started to go with them, sadly. I think Pat tried her best to carry Carrie Bradshaw vibes over to Emily in Paris, and I think that's the maximum amount of effort she gave. I vividly remember her back and forth between the studio and Paris for quite a while. That took a toll on her as well.

I mean we already don't have the best image, so it's just disappointing how it's cliché and not settle our reputation. I agree. Being an American and seeing an American character being so disrespectful to other cultures, and somehow being almost praised for it, is disappointing and quite unsettling. There is no respect or love in this show, its embarrassing 😞 I wish i could afford to travel to Europe and other places, but I cant right now; and yet, a lot of Americans who DO have the means to travel are often the ones who make all Americans look like entitled, disrespectful assholes 😑 I will not be watching this show. The "american who goes to another country and tries to impose their culture there" is actually very... accurate. To anyone how haven't heard abou "Fordlandia" (aka the country Ford tried to build as a southern American city in the middle of Brazilian Amazon Forest) is a good story to be flabbergasted by. But as you may see normally things don't go as well as it goes for Emily... Even if no one said that the show was written by Americans you could gess it by how successful she is despite, well, everything Zoe just said (in a great way)

I never heard of that but it seems normal. Americans in general do have a bit of a God complex, even in their school system - not learning geography properly being one of the most visible ones - they cant even point France on a map sometimes. Or even Brazil. And that's really sad. Also not trying to offend anyone but that's just the vibes I get from social media - which of course isn't everyone but its still sad.

Regarding Sylvie calling Emily out on how she treats being in Paris as being in an amusement park and it's chef's kiss, so on point. I'm French, born and raised in Paris, and this is a very common reproach to tourists. Yes it's ✨️Paris✨️ but it's also a place where people live jfc it's not an amusement park. Also regarding the joke about Lean French Women always smoking - we just... Eat reasonable portions and walk a lot? And even then, the country is still having an increasing issue of obesity. So this sort of line is just gross and rude and not representative at all of the country as it currently is.

They actually could have shown something with the whole "Lean French Women" : 1/ Paris specificity and its absence of car culture - indeed, when living in Paris, you walk - and for more and more people, bike - a lot. Never take your car, except the occasional cab at 2am. You can walk to your grocery store. You may take the subway, indeed, but often standing instead of sitting. 2/French specificity now - we here take time to eat and to cook. Almost no takeaways, lots of homecooking, heaps of cooking with friends, family...and the more time you take to cook and to eat, the healthier it is for your body. I remember, each year I spent abroad, in two very different countries, whenever there where several French people around we would always talk about food, or assist in the food making. It's a thing, and not a cliché. It would have been nice to show that instead of the cheap "French people are all smoking".

The part about Mindy acting “loud,” “rude” or “uncultured” supposedly because she’s Chinese is so far from the reality of the Chinese expats and Taiwanese people I’ve met that it’s painful…Talking about sex in public is still extremely taboo and if anything, people who live or grew up in Asian countries with a thriving culture of street fashion look more put together than their American counterparts. People also care a great deal about being polite, and while not all of the social courtesies translate perfectly into American culture, they are evident if you spend any amount of time with a Chinese or Taiwanese person.

Regarding the body dysmorphia thing I honestly think its a bit disingenuous of Lily to pretend like she doesn't still have ED tendencies. She is visibly very underweight and is thinner than almost all of the very thin French women on the show. She basically looks the same as she did in To the Bone where she said that she "healthily lost weight to portray someone with anorexia". As someone who has struggled with an ED for nearly half my life, I can see through the bs. She can exist however she wants but I don't think its healthy to go around pretending that body type is one of a fully recovered person

This. In Season 3 she's even thinner than in S1 and S2. She looks emaciated and scrawny, which is very visible when she's next to Camille who looks radiating, healthy glowing next to her (and Camille is still slim). I have to say that Sylvie also looks thinner than in the previous seasons which ages her a lot. I also have an ED background and both Emily and Sylvie scream eating disorder. I'm all for being slim and fit and pretty (like Camille), but these two characters are giving off extremely red flag body images for female viewers.

I watch it for the pretty scenery and decor etc. Otherwise, there's a lot that the show lacks in writing, content and dare I say - even the acting .. I completely understand that some people feel targeted and attacked (i.e French people) and that sucks but instead of watching it and sharing it etc, perhaps petition against the show? That might be more effective.

I feel so bad for Lily Collins. Not only does she most likely receive hate bc of the character she plays, but they had to incorporate body dysmorphia in the show (a supposed comedy drama!) while the director most likely knew of her past issues.

Don't feel bad for her - if I'm not mistaken she is one of the show's producers (or just has a part in creating the show aside from acting as a main charakter but I don't know exactly what role it is because english is not my first language so forgive me) so I'm fairly certain she has more freedom/power to choose whether she wants to portray something in the show. The show is such an inaccurate caricature of the French culture that it's actually mocking American clichés. As a French person I like to watch it and laugh at the clichés (croissants, cigarettes, sex..) and I think that's actually what's funny about the show. What actually bothers me is that that the very expensive lifestyle of Emily is portrayed as normal even though almost no one can afford it, especially since inflation (daily restaurants, appartement in Paris, high fashion brands, castles in the country side...) The lifestyle of the middle and poorer classes are also valuable and can also be romanticized ❤

i genuinely appreciate the critique, but i don’t think that the body dysmorphia critique is completely accurate - body dysmorphia is a mental disorder in its own right and can absolutely be independent of eating disorders and general body image concern. i completely think that the show does spread harmful ideas regarding body image, but i think that the term bdd is used so commonly without really understanding the nature of the disorder itself.

I’m not even French (I’m Italian) but I really felt French people annoyance. This treatment in particular from Americans can be applied to all Southern European countries, we are to frequently represented as lazy, unreasonable, sexually promiscuous, attractive but only for quick and exotic sexual experiences, our countries are taken as fun parks instead of places to visit seriously for the culture and history.

I think the show is written with the goal to be so obnoxious. It is an escapism piece, and in this way it is very similar to sex in the city. There are unrealistic problems, zero responsibility for immature behavior, bright clothing and even a distinct thinness of the main actress. Truly, such a thinness might be an obligatory trait of an escapist movie. So the show is not badly written: it’s manipulatively written

I’m really familiar with french culture, and ive thought really hard about what this show is trying to do. And i think the answer is that Emily is the anti-hero. She is protagonist and antagonist. We follow her story, but she causes the drama wherever she goes. For example, She turns a blind eye to cultural differences and it comes out as optimism. And i think, when you start watching it from this perspective, a lot of views change about how Emily interacts with people around her. Second, Emily in Paris does have a team of french writers. But you can tell they are at odds with the american director. The american director wants this to be a feel-good show in the city of Love. The french team wants to show real life in Paris as an immigrant, and how clumsy and awkward and lonely it is. And the result is a somewhat confusing plot. So the result is this show is wearing a lot of different hats, trying to be a lot of different things, and I’m curious to see how things unfold.

I also think they’re taking us on a journey. Idk if you saw the behind the scenes but they said that basically the beginning was done that way intentionally. That now Emily is starting to dress differently because she’s slowly becoming more Parisian and now we’re seeing more of france not just Paris and more of the true culture of the French not just the stereotypes. So it’s like we’re also on this trip along with Emily. The show is fine if you detach from overt nitpicking and just “enjoy” it at face value. Anyone who looks at the show and thinks it’s an accurate representation of French culture have their own problems to work through. My biggest nitpick of the show, having watched all three seasons, is the horrible way they promote promiscuity while in relationships. Also, don’t even get me started on the horrendous lack of critical thinking. Emily, and every character in this show, would not have ANY of the problems they struggle with if they learned how to properly communicate and think before acting on impulse. Emily can act however she wants, and people are supposed to just accept it. And FINALLY, after three seasons, some people are starting to get annoyed with her antics. It’s incredibly unrealistic to have every single person that meets her fall head over heels, and then praise her for being a genius. Is Emily in Paris a bad show? Yeah. I will agree, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy tuning in to see what awful decisions are going to made, and the repercussions of those decisions. Definitely not made to be taken seriously. However, this show can leave bad impressions on the wrong people.

The real "secret" in french/european physique compared to USA is the simple fact that we have much more food regulations, less sugar in things and fast food isn't that cheap here (I mean yes compared to a classy restaurant it can be but fast food just isn't the cheapest option - that is cooking at home from scratch). Anyone who travelled here says this too, it is not a hard to find piece of information. Also - Im not trying to blame it on people of the USA, absolutely not, its on your government and the organizations making food regulations. So basically french cousine has less fat (as in oils), less salt and sugar and uses fresh ingredients. And that's really it.

Is every person that isn't white supposed to be portrayed as a perfect person? There are bad white characters and good white characters, not every character in every show is supposed to be great, that would be very boring. An asian person being in a show shouldn't be seen as a representation of asian people. Shows, books, movies, and other forms of art should just be taken as exactly that, art. I kinda feel like it's cool to hate this show so people are hating on it a little too hard. To me the show is extremely shallow with shallow relationships and that's what I find to be the biggest problem of the show. We don't get much explanation of why is Emily the way she is. The second problem is the narrative that Americans are better than Parisians, but that's also not quite true, since Emily's boss is also American but painted as the villain. I think we should somehow believe Emily is really talented, what we see, but it's annoying that she doesn't really struggle and gets everything handed to her. I don't mind the jokes about French people, that's how everyone in Europe talks about them and all the nations have different quirks. We know. It's funny. Id be great if they made fun of Americans more. I don't think that Emily was trying to have it all, this season. She just wants to be good, do good, and be loved. She is trying to be a good friend to Camille now, but it's not working out. I don't believe at all she was trying to steel Gabriel at all. She was really trying to make it work with Alfie and she did struggle. I felt like Alfie was the one that was not sure of the relationship.

You're the first youtuber to point out how weird Mindy's casting was!! As a native Mandarin speaker this is so infuriating, like either cast someone that speaks Chinese or let the woman speak Korean. I refuse to watch it after watching 3 episodes from season 1, I can feel my brain cells dying with every second of the show.

i agree on the problematic aspects you mentioned, but when it comes to stuff like her unrealistic follower growth, how she can afford branded clothes, etc. - I do not care. I never care about such things because I watch tv shows to forget about real life and its complications, not to analyze what's too good to be true in real world :D

As someone who is’nt either asian, american or frech… i didn’t thought about the show this much and i think there is the problem. As someone who isn’t affected by the portrait of a culture in this show you don’t dig deeper. I think a lot of people like me could possibly see these things (cliches) as normal which is really problematic… thank you for pointing out these things 😌

There's negative stereotypes about Italy too (and other Europeans countries). Since "everyone knows it" is a proof that it's true and a good excuse to spread even more the most anti-French clichés possible I hope that you say the same when Italians are portrayed as lazy or all related to the mafia (or other things like that). Same with other Europeans, they probably find it less fun when it's about their countrymen. Unfortunately we seem to like them more than they like us.

cant watch emily in paris anymore bc as someone recovering from an ed, disordered relationship to exercise, food and body image.. dealing with weight gain body changes it’s extremely hard seeing Her be veryyy skinny like it just looks not healthy at all and then her performatively eating "bad” food ( im aware food doesn’t have a moral value, there’s no labels/ good or bad ) is just such bs. bc like emily in paris clearly promotes a certain body ideal and stereotype and glamorizes it

Having lived abroad in Seoul and now for many years in Tokyo, I feel it's quite easy to meet [especially men] who have lived here for decades that do not speak enough of the language to go to the bank themselves. They often marry a local and have kids and still somehow end up the biggest dependent in the house... and the entitlement at work :( Of course not all American or Western people I've met are super entitled but many :(
@mio26k82

It is not only western thing. I live in Europe in the country where our native language is pretty hard and at the same time quite a lot of people speak pretty well English. In case of foreign well educated workers from all around the world it is very rare to meet someone who speak our language even if they live here for very long time and are in relationships with native. If someone is learning it is probably women, lol.

I'm Italian, but I lived in Paris many years because my aunt is Parisienne. I visit Paris several time, and when I 've watched the show, I've found it very offensive and racist against french people. I've always find kind and gentle person in Paris, not in all France, but in Paris definitely yes! I've found the show so "a clichè "of all bad things that people, especially Americans, thinks of French and eEuropean people in general. French and Italian are really similar, and personally I'm a little upset when I've watched it. it's so untrue and exaggerate. It's like when I watch an U.S ,movie and Italian are always portrayed like gross, old fashion ( well we're one of the most important fashion industry in the whole world, sorry...) , every Italian person, only had restaurants or make pizza , cannoli ext. they're always too loud, too friendly , not that it's a bad think but it's portrayed in a goofy ways, and it's not like this. in Italy there's some of most elegant and classy women I've ever met, even when they go to the supermarket they're really refined , and not everyone only sing, play mandolino and doing nothing all the day like many movies trying to display. this is most an Americans things to underestimate others country to makes them shine much more, and show how better they are, and let me say, I love U.S and American, I have many u.s friends and they're adorable, but when they met me for the first time they're shocked because I'm blonde with green eyes. that for explain how people have a certain image of Italian, or in case of Emily, french people. that's my impression of EIP. thanks for this video, you're completely right. kisses from the beautiful Italy.

As someone learning French since almost 7 years, I am disgusted by the portrayal of French people and their culture. The thing which made me the most infuriated was the fact that almost every single French person that Emily interacts with knows and SPEAKS English and ,even after such a long time in Paris, Emily knows almost no French. Come on, she wouldn’t survive tjat long in Paris without knowing basic French.

i think the show is funnier if you don’t take it too seriously. I really think it’s filled with flaws, but also we have way too many grim Euphoria meets Riverdale shows and it’s a breath of fresh air to have something that’s not glorified trauma corn. That’s why Emily in Paris is so easy to watch even if Euphoria has better writing-it’s easier to binge on. the thing is shows like SATC, Girlfriends, anything sitcom-y we’re something you could watch over and over, and most modern tv shows make these 8 movie like episodes that are incredibly hard to watch twice. It’s insulting to French culture but I think a great parody of Americans and self centeredness such as Emily’s.

Ik I’m not in the place to say something about France, but as an Italian it reminds me of those American (and I mean the country and not the continent) movies where they overly stereotype every single thing they can about Italy… A family member who’s related to the mafia, a “typical” Italian woman having her features sexualized (poor me bc not my features lol), somebody trying to master our accent (if not mocking it), how we eat pizza every second, how all Italian men are incredible lovers (lol) or womanizers and oh, of course, how we are full time doing “🤌🏼”! Ps: this comment of mine was copied and pasted from a French’s person comment I replied to… Just find it interesting to share!
