The fact she got a Fool Us trophy out of it really annoyed me. I've seen better magicians pull off harder tricks and leave without a trophy. I was unimpressed with her trick already. A pre-set un-shuffled set of cards there was already rigged. And then manipulating the voice of an audience member with a microphone. That isn't magic. That would be like me programming a virus in your computer so every time you type 6, it will generate a 9 instead. Look I'm a magician too!

Once she told him not to react and then changed his answer, she basically makes the guy an instant stooge. Which I believe is also against the rules.

You don’t need an off-stage assistant at all, nor does Emily even have to memorize the stacked deck, with today’s microprocessors and voice recognition software, when Emily clearly repeats “6 of Spades” into the microphone, the next recording out of it will be “47” as the cards positions are already programmed into the microphone microprocessors. Notice how the deck wasn’t shuffled or cut but just presented as a stack.

At the 2:18 mark, the magic trick is revealed. I suppose the pressure on stage in front of P&T, hundreds of people and the TV cameras made the guy NOT protest the audio switching of his number from 17 to 47.

That's something else I thought of as well. When I said P & T do tricks like this, I meant that I believe that they do some of them like this but I can't say that as a fact that I know is one hundred percent true. If they do it, I think it's fair that the contestants do it. If they don't, then they wouldn't allow the contestants to do it either. Just as they one hundred percent do NOT use plants in the audience and therefore do not allow the contestants to do so either.

You are basically wrong: the mic is custom built and you have 3 switches, 2 of them to set the position value. Emily is using an stacked deck, so when the female spectator says "6 of spades" Emily knows the position of this card. She presses 4 times one of the switches, and 7 times the second switch. The third switch mutes the mic and plays a pre-recorded male voice with all positions stores in MP3 format. No assistants required sir.

This is the guess of "totally magic" but nowhere do you see her pressing the fool us mic 4 times and then 7 times and then pressing it again to turn it off and then pressing it again to turn it back on. Absurd! It's done with an assistant which is legal. A lot of magicians use assistants that help with the trick, especially illusions.

I don't get it. Why didn't they guy say something? It would have ruined the whole trick but I still don't get why he didn't say something or have more of a reaction. And how did this fool Penn & Teller? I can get behind the fact that the magicians are allowed to have a backstage assistant, but if P & T know this then how were they fooled? They knew she had an assistant they just didn't know how he was helping her? They've done tricks similar to this. I mean it fooled me too but it's just so elaborate and relies on a lot of different things to go right. Personally, I'd mix it up and let the card itself be a free choice but somehow force the position. Of course, that probably wouldn't have fooled two of the world's greatest magicians....

When an audience member comes onto a stage, and the magician gives them a direction, they almost always comply. People almost never speak up and mess up a trick. That is why many magicians use the "instant stooge" technique. However, in this performance neither stooges nor instant stooging wwere used.

Interesting theory, but the reaction of the two spectators just is not consistent with this at all. They'd have reacted far more obviously, and there's a HUGE possibility that one or the other would just completely blow the trick to smithereens right away.

Here is the problem with your reveal. At 3:13 you say Emily mutes the mic and the assistant backstage announces the number 47. If she muted the mic , HOW CAN YOU HEAR THE ASSISTANT SAYING 47 THROUGH THE MIC IF IT IS MUTED? Does he have his own Fool Us microphone backstage hooked up to the P.A. system?

An arrangement cannot be made with a spectator before the trick begins. The magician can try to make a secret arrangement with a volunteer after the trick begins. This is call an "instant stooge" or "insta-stooge" and is permitted by Fool Us.

You would think they would say something - but people just don't. I listened to an interview with a magician and he says that when you summon an audience member off stage, they are very compliant and almost never will say anything to mess up a trick.

Fool Us does indeed allow assistants during the performance. This is NOT against the rules. A common example is to have a small assistant hidden within a table to help.

Before performing for Penn and Teller she needs to show the trick to producers and they will say it's allowed or not. Obviously this was allowed so Instant stooges are not against the rules, which is stupid because it's still technically a stooge which IS against the rules. No offence to her, but it's a pretty scummy trick and did not deserve a trophy.
