FAQ
An occasionally asked question: Did I lie to Penn & Teller?
No.
During the performance there are 2 people that know how the trick is done. Me (obviously) and Mike Close. Mike is the magic consultant for the show, and for lack of a better way to put it, Fooler judge and referee for the show. He is the person Penn & Teller are talking with when they are trying to figure out the trick while Alyson and I chat. If I were to have lied, the cameras would stop and I'd be called out for it.
The pea was in the walnut.
So why did P & T ask about the handkerchief?
My guess is to eliminate that possible method for the TV audience.
So why did I use the handkerchief?
When the walnut is cracked open in addition to shell fragments going everywhere, sometimes the signed pea flies off the table. It's rare, but it happens. Watching three grown men search for a signed cork pea would not make for good television.
Could Penn or Teller have cracked open the walnut?
Yes, but given the time constraints of TV, and the need to expedite the process, I did.

@@Chuckiele the nut was split in the middle under the tin cup. When he uncovers the nut he does a good job of hiding it, but not good enough for the close up. That is when he slipped the palmed pea into the nut. You can tell the nut is split by the way he holds it together even when setting it on the cloth. He doesn't release the nut until it's covered. He then really tries to smash the nut so that it breaks in more than one spot to not show the split down the middle.

I think the coolest part of this routine is that you did pretty much everything you could to turn the crux of "knowing" the trick into seeing exactly when and how that specific pea gets into that specific walnut. It cuts down the universe of possible ways you did the trick so much that you're basically throwing down the gauntlet and saying, "Was my sleight of hand good enough to fool Penn and Teller?"

While absolutely true, I can't help but think that shaky hands would actually make it a bit harder for someone to notice a move. If they're always making those little movements, it's really hard to tell what's nerves and what's concealing some sleight of hand.

@@falcore91 It also puts a LOT of focus on those cups and whether or not the trick has been compromised, immediately before the moment where he puts the pea in the walnut, and beneath the cup. It's like mental misdirection. It basically keeps you from being complacent so that when he goes to pull the wallet out, you're not like "uh oh, he's doing something weird now...." the whole trick is full of odd, distracting moments. You know, I've spent the better part of 2 days looking at Penn and Teller Fool Us routines... Some segments are better than others, but what really sets some of the performances apart aren't whether or not they fool Pen or Teller, which is usually great to see in its own right. But rather, you know you see a great magician when they are genuinely passionate about what they do and are excited to be on a stage to share it with two other magicians they clearly admire and respect. Just look at him celebrate when he wins the trophy! I don't care very much for the egotistical types who are looking for glory, and this guy strikes me as a seasoned, well-adjusted performer, who has a great sense of humor, and a great act; even prompting Penn (one of the loudest and most refined stage personas I've seen in magic) to state "what a great routine, great routine" at 9:10. Yeah. The moment when he "vanishes" the pea, so to speak, is freaking fast and smooth. The load is more easily spotted. This was probably one of the best performances I’ve seen on the show; not because the trick is a personal favorite (which it it), but because of the way Doc connected to Penn/Teller, the audience, and even the viewers at home. If that’s what magic’s about, then this performance demonstrates a master at work.
