No , you're not alone . At first when I tried to curl my hair it didn't work, but u just have to keep your hair it the heat for longer and also it depends on what type of hair u have. You can read the instructions manual and it would say at what temperature you would have to curl your hair

I figured out what I was doing wrong - you have to COMPLETELY turn the iron ALL the way (use a mirror) to the other side and then you must glide it down IN THAT EXACT POSITION and making sure that there is enough tension when you pull down slowly, away from your face. You "catch" the tension when you first flip the iron. If you do not glide down the hair in a bent position, it will NOT work. Also make sure to keep the iron up and down when doing the flip. Then you turn it down into the bent position and take your time with it when coming down. Also, hold the tail end AWAY from the direction you are pulling it away from. This is what makes the curl.
