I enjoyed this video immensely! Durers' hare is so faithfully rendered, you did a great job! You expressed frustration at not being able find a brush small enough for the minute details in the hair. I knew an artist who had the same problem painting birds. This is how he solved the problem of making a tiny highlight on the eye of a bird: He would pluck a hair from his eyebrow, and holding it with tweezers, dip the root end (which has a slight bulb on it) into the paint and touch it to the eye of the bird, making a perfect dot. The other tapered end of the eyelash could be used for fine details and highlights on feathers.

Hi, I've been painting works by Degas and like you have mentioned in this video you learn not only the techniques used by these artists but about what they were thinking, their values and beliefs as well. Your work here is incredible. I'm sure that if Durer is alive today he'd be so proud of the work that you have created in his honor.

Wow! I have actually seen the original "Young Hare" at Albertina a few years ago, it was the main thing I wanted to see out of all artworks in Vienna, and it is incredibly impressive. Your master copy is fantastic. The original is obviously more faded (500 years is no joke) so it was almost like seeing it all brand new again. What a great idea and video!

I have 0, 00, 1 small brushes but after I turned 80 I could tell I had lost some control. My small strokes seem heavy handed so they become wider no matter how small the brush. I only began in 2020 painting and only had you tube as my teacher but it is still fun and compelling to paint. I enjoyed watching this video but you are years ahead of me and younger. :) This painting is amazing!

Hi Emily ! I almost did not dare to open your video. I Looooove Dürer, esp. this one (ca. 20 diff. Reproductions in my room). When we visited Vienna (I m from Germany) we went to the Albertina, too. They don t always Display the Original, so Don t know if it was IT or not but I was overwhelmed! Same feeling when I watched of video !

Emily, Wow, Wow. GREAT PIECE OF ARTWORK !!!!. I never thought you will take my suggestion seriously and will take months of study to make this incredible masterpiece of Great Albert Durer. You have done a fabulous job by capturing almost every pixel of his painting. From the very young age, I am very much loved the work of Albert Durer. I want to learn his techniques. Only once I tried the pencil sketch of his self-portrait. When I was in Portugal, I got a chance to see some of the original paintings in the national history of museums in Lisbon. I want to make a copy of his rabbit painting. Frankly speaking, it was difficult for me to start this painting. How to capture his brushstrokes and tiny details on the rabbit body. But now through your video, I can at least make some attempt to copy this work. last, but not least I am very thankful to you mentioning my name in the last part of your video.

I admire your skill and perseverance with this painting! Yours looks quite similar to Durer’s, and it was great to learn and listen through you about various techniques. When I first started painting animals, I thought I had to paint each individual hair and quickly became frustrated. I’m still figuring out the balance between what to show and what to leave to suggestion, but I love the process so much more now, and greatly admire anyone who has the patience (and wrist strength!) to paint/draw hyper-realistically. Great video. 💜

I am honestly so so so impressed. Thanks so much for doing all this work and showing us how you did it! Quick question-because coffee is slightly acidic, does this mean your version isn't archival and will fade? I'm honestly not sure how it'll impact the aging process and am kind of curious.

Thanks for your kind comment! I'm honestly not sure what the affect of the coffee staining will be. I'm guessing with will be minimal since I used very little. That said, if it doesn't last 500 years liker Durer's I won't alive to be mad about it. 😊

I wonder how many rabbits were studied by artists, i can think of two others now, Beatrix Potter, and student work of Georgia O'Keeffe
Do you ever watch artist Steven Kozar? When he copies from a photo, you can't tell the difference. Of coarse he is in no hurry when he paints and some take him months. But in some cases, he has an extra copy, so he can cut it into strips,( looked like 2" )wide so he can lay the strip right next to where he is working. So that he can get his colors and values exact, and angles and all. That would help you in this case, but you've already painted yours and it is just beautiful. I love your work
@EmilyOlsonArt4 жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to look him up! Photo realism is incredible--not sure I have the patience or time to make it my regular style. 😆 Cutting the image into strips would be helpful, though!
@sharonsands7084 жыл бұрын
@@EmilyOlsonArt yes, when you look him up you'll find he does things a little differently. Such as painting his skyscrapers and trees upside down.
