In addition to the tie weight and drag pulling the weights together, there's also bounce. If the weights pull the string between them straight, they bounce back. So the optimal solution would be to first use heavier weights. This increases mortality a lot, but when has that ever stopped fashion. Second, they should start close together and be aimed so, that almost but not quite pull the string straight before they start moving closer together because of tie pull. That would maximize the usable distance range. Of course, because of the much higher mortality, you don't get to try so often, so that's a minus.

Just an idea for future projects, you used copper tubing for the nozzles here, and you were kinda struggling to bend the copper. Not sure if you've seen it, but there is an alloy material being used in place of steel lines for automotive brakes systems, which is nickel copper. It bends Sooooo much easier than steel, and I honestly think even nicer than copper. It comes in a couple of sizes and you can get it in various lengths, but 12.5 and 25 feet are normal lengths. Just something to throw out there as it has plenty of strength to function as hydraulic brake tubing so for most applications it should be perfectly fine.
