I've wanted to feature Enimem on this channel for quite some time, but I didn't expect to have one of his songs covered by Kasey Chambers. . . whom I'd never heard of before. But this song has been on the Patreon top 5 list over 6 times in the last year - it just never won. Today, we're rewarding those patrons, AND your ears! This cover is amazing!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Kasey Chambers covering Eminem for the first time, performing "Lose Yourself".

My husband went to high school w/ Eminem. We lived at 10 mile. He was at 8 mile. Worlds apart. My point is being from Detroit, regardless of your preferred genres, he's untouchable. Sacrosanct. I hated this before I heard one note. Until I heard the first 20 seconds. She absolutely hooked me! Her phrasing of words that are muscle memory to me was so unique that had to laser focus to follow the lyrics. I lost count of how many times she gave me total-body goosebumps! I was hooked! Then she whipped out the jams and rocked out on it! So brutally frank with such deep emotion; she gripped me to the soul! I've never, in 62 years of listening to alllll genres open mindedly, heard anything that hit me like this. That was a physical and emotional ride like i never had with music before and i will be seeking out everything I can by her. BRAVO! Thank you for this experience!

The difference in the two versions is that Eminem is talking about the father who 'barely knows his own daughter', Kasey Chambers' perspective is that of the daughter and the thing is, being her father was a musician in his own right, she has lived this.

Where Kasey’s “magic” is, is that while a lot of successful singers can tell a story, she’s a storyteller that can sing. Her first song that brought her to the attention of us here in Australia was called “Not pretty enough” where she’s telling her story of not being able to get airtime on the commercial radio. It went number 1. In 2017, it was added to the National Film and Sound Archives collection of historically and culturally important recordings.

You are so correct about Kasey being a storyteller first and foremost. I’d never thought about it like that. A family member was in a rehab facility on the Central Coast of NSW. Kasey came to visit them one evening to talk, and then she cooked them dinner. I’m so grateful to her for that. It had a huge impact on my niece and her path to sobriety.

Firstly let give props to the stones it takes to cover the biggest rap song in history from the greatest rapper in history. a song that won an Oscar and everyone alive has heard the original. Then to drop this masterpiece is something special, the creativity to take the song to a whole new level of emotion. Eminem was a millionaire telling his story after the fact more as an inspirational tale of keep dreaming and reaching for that dream. This version delivered the same story but gave the same lyrics a whole new level of the pain of that struggle, the life regrets of chasing your dream and missing out on life's other joys and commitments, then the anger at how one dream reaching crushes the dreams of people you miss out on. The steady build throughout is nothing short of perfection. I was so happy to see you finally put this on. I consider this probably the best live cover I have ever seen in my life.

@bunyipdan
@bunyipdan Ай бұрын
Arguably one of the best covers of all time in my book, Kasey transforms a truely iconic legendary singularly driven original rap song, into a hauntingly honest story of generational struggle and pain portrayed by a bluegrass back country matriarchal delivery to then build into full boar hard country/rock crescendo, defiant fierce, determined hurtling meteoric train of emotion…..Amazing Can’t recall witnessing anyone smash a banjo quite like this. She made this song into something completely different, without diminishing the original at all, and all the while I can’t help but hear the ghost of the original, familiar words told from a different perspective making you realise just how brilliant Eminem’s lyrics actually are. IMHO this performance sits with John Cash - Hurt, Diana Akundinova’s - Wicked Games or Can’t help falling in love…. Thanks for finally getting round to reacting to this one

I’m so glad to see your reaction to Kasey’s version of this song. Kasey is a national treasure and deserves all the credit she’s getting to take on this song. I’m kicking myself I was not at this show as the Civic Theatre is a great venue and closer to me than Sydney shows. I have a few reasons this version his so hard. The original Eminem was an instant classic and even if not a fan of him or rap in general, you can’t deny his writing talent. This song is pure poetry. In the original even with 3 verses it is still in two parts. The first told in third person before making it big and then in first person post success and this if a brilliant concept. Since the song is a recap of the semi-autobiographical movie and we kind of know the ending it is inspirational because we know how it ends. It also starts at a seven and builds to a 9.5 With Kasey’s version by pairing it right back and having the first verse sung in the third person as a different gender we start the song simply hearing a sad tail of woe in a bluesy kind if style at about a 2-3 on the energy scale. Going into the second verse we are treated to a true part two. This is where her brilliance shines, not just in the arrangement of the song itself but in the stagecraft of the entire production. This is where the song completely changes course with the line “his soul’s escaping through this hole that is gaping”. This is the point where the second guitarist does the first harmony indicating the story she’s telling is manifesting itself into her real life. This gets emphasised as more harmonies are added and in a blink or you miss it moment it is now her story at the line “they moved on to the next Schmoe who flows” as they both use identical movements and the harmonies continue. This builds the energy to a 3-4 The third distinct change happens at the line “I was playin’ in the beginning, the mood all changed”. Even though the band has kicked in and we’ve got the anger, this is where she confirms this is now her story and it’s no longer a sad tail about a stranger, she’s telling of her own life and death realisation she needs to do something. From here the energy instantly doubles to an 8 and continues to build to an 11. Kasey lives locally to me and I got to meet her often at the time her career was really taking of. She is a genuinely lovely person. I’m not a huge country fan but have a few of her singles because the ‘b’ sides she’s done covers of other more mainstream songs I liked. Her big hit Not Pretty Enough contains a cover of Powerfinger’s These Days that is a match to the original. She has also covered Crowded House’s Better Be Home Soon that I absolutely adore. You can find this on a album called She Will Have Her Way that is a compilation of local Australian female artists doing their own covers of Split Endz and Crowded House songs. I highly recommend tracking it down.

Em gave her his permission (or the owner to the rights of the song) to release on Spotify, that says it all 👏👏👏 She is aged 46 at the time of this performance 2022. I’ve always been a fan of Kasey, she is a freakin amazing & talented musician, artist & woman. But this was next level genius & so personal for her. She has lived every second of this story’s soul through her own life’s journey. The performance wasn’t filmed, she put a post out after the show to fans present to please send in any footage, the compilation of which you see. The band killed it, matching & building with her energy brilliantly. Long time band member Brandon (I think 🤔) on guitar & the vocals that nurtured the momentum & her dad on slide guitar making it sing like a phoenix - all of them together made this one of the all time best live, for me a rebirth, not a cover, that I’ve ever heard, seen & felt….to my core.

I bought Barricades and Brickwalls based on an Entertainment Weekly review more than 20 years ago before realizing she sang "The Captain" from The Sopranos. Her lilt and "musical rage" is other-worldly. And she's amazing live, I've seen her 3x in Chicago.

I love that you have done this. Kasey is an absolute legend down here in Australia. I remember some years back, I was on a Qantas plane, I sat down and one of her songs was playing over the loud speakers as we were boarding. I then looked up there she was walking to her seat with her then little boy Talon, it was quite surreal.

It's wonderful to see Kasey's development from her early song "Am I Not Pretty Enough?", where she questions her place in the music industry, to the sorrow and rage of this cover, "Lose Yourself ", to the confidence and maturity of "I ain't No Little Girl" which is one of my favourites of hers. Thank you for reacting to her song, she doesn't get enough credit.

As Kasey said, 'I was playing in the beginning, then the mood or changed." Someone got between Momma Bear and her cubs. Remember that most of Kasey's work is Country/Blues, but regardless of the style, her ability to rip her heart out and leave it beating on the stage is awe inspiring. Songs like 'Nullarbor Song (Live)', where here homesickness tears at you, or 'Not Pretty Enough', where you live with her heartbreak at not being recognised and 'Aint No Little Girl' where she brings the adult woman's reaction to some b*stard playing with her heart.

Thank you for hearing Kasey's entire history in her voice within this one amazing performance. The shy wallflower in "The Captain". The disheartened, ignored person in "(Am I) Not Pretty Enough". Through to the goddess she is today in "Ain't No Little Girl". Even if you don't cover them on your channel, do yourself a favour & listen to them (especially "Ain't No Little Girl"). The official videos are great. The live versions in The Caverns Sessions (fka Bluegrass Underground) are outstanding.

OMG! THANK YOU! For covering Kasey Chambers👏. She has long been one of my favorite artists and long overlooked. She is ‘Country’ in the true tradition of Roots music, but I believe she was ignored by that industry because she didn’t meet the industry’s model’ of what a Country artist is today. To me, she puts them all to shame. She is Americana, but she is not American. Maybe she can teach us something about the roots of our music traditions. I hope you will cover more of this wonderful artist. She deserves more recognition than she has received. Thank you again 🙏✌️

@@elizabethtout7163 Hi Elizabeth. My apologies because I did not mean this as any slight to Australia (a country I have visited twice and which I love). I am well aware of Kasey’s well earned fame and reputation in Australia which has its own proud culture of music and arts. My comment was intended to wholly lay the blame on the U.S. music industry, in particular America’s ‘Country’ music industry, which has sold its soul in the desire for $$ and popularity. imho- Kasey should be a Superstar in the U.S. The fact that she isn’t is totally unforgivable. I hope that helps clarify my comments. You are rightfully proud of Kasey Chambers as an Australian National Treasure 🙏✌️

Kasey’s amazing isn’t she , this one is pretty intense. and she is so good live . Eminem has heard and approved of her cover. When this happened the sound was recorded but no video was taken. They reached out to the fans and this is a compilation of phone videos. You are right about music therapy, I sing opera chorus, whatever week I’ve had, I always feel better after rehearsal, and or course performance.

Kasey may not be huge on the US Top 40 circuit, but she has a massive following in Nashville and the US Country Music scene. She travels from Oz to the US at least every 2 months to tour with anyone who doesn't mind being upstaged. I recommend listening to the Dragonfly double CD she recorded for a great example of her styles and abilities, which was part recorded by Oz Music Royalty and Mentor - Paul Kelly.

First off, this is one of the best cover songs I've heard. Second, if anyone is more interested in a deeper breakdown of how it compares to the original from a delivery standpoint, check out Knox Hill's analysis of this. He points out that she uses a lot of the same cadences Eminem used, just at a slower tempo. Also, pretty much every rapper I've seen react to this loved it and said her delivery not only highlighted how great of a lyricist Eminem is, but actually made the lyrics hit even harder emotionally.

I've watched the original video a lot (and a fair few reactions too) and even after all those views my breath still catches in my throat every damn time at '...failure's not!' Kasey really let's us hear the pain and angst of Eminem's song....For me his original song was like a 'punch in the face' and he released his rage . Kasey uses his words to show the pain and frustration of his early life with such meaning....I think she did his song brilliantly. Loved your reaction CM Hi from Australia....ps suggest 'Ain't No Little Girl' you will be blown away...

It helps her that she actually lived the lyrics of this song and is able to channel that into her performance. Not taking anything away from the performance as it is absolutely stunning. If you've experienced anything close to the idea expressed in the lyrics she hits that experience on the head.

I’m not saying Eminem is Shakespeare but in old bills generation he was a guy who was good with words, and in ours Eminem is likewise good with words. People have been interpreting Shakespeares works for centuries, and generations of kids have read through his works line by line in classrooms. I’m not a fan of rap as a genre, I respect it, it just doesn’t float my boat, however I have no doubt that if we had a time machine kids will be reading Eminem’s words long after we’re turned to dust. Casey is a phenomenal performer, from a successful family of performers. For her to have put the effort into arranging this (apparently a Covid lockdown project) is a genuine mark of respect to the author of these powerful words. One day I’d love to hear what he thinks of what she’s done, I’ve no doubt he’s heard it at some point

Kasey has a lot of respect for Eminem and got permission to release the video clip on KZbin then the song on Spotify. Note: she's had nodule surgery (bot exactly sure on the details), so it's amazing what she was able to do to sound so similar to her pre-surgery voice. I'm so glad you finally reacted and showed obvious enjoyment in Kaset's telents. PS: the guy playing slide guitar is her dad
