His wife slit her wrists in front of their daughter while he was away and both of them had a drug problem so Eminem stopped touring after this. After he got clean he started treating rap like a 9-5 job to spend time with his family and he still does that today. Akon said in an interview he showed up at the studio at 9am and leaves at 5 pm whether his verse is done or not. He also tried to kill off his alter ego Slim Shady after this which is why he said he put a gun to his head and screamed die Shady(not to kill himself but Slim Shady) and you can hear in his music that Shady was gone for years until 2018 when people pissed him off with all the criticism and he came back.

Slim Shady was definitely around in Relapse in 2009. So a 4 year gap from When I'm Gone (2005). I always took the lyrics "die Shady" to mean the alcohol and pills, as in this was his vow to get clean, but that's just me.
