What is Eminence Front? It’s a put-on. (Pete Townsend sometimes sings; “It’s Bulls__t”.) The song is about a Cocaine Party for society’s elite “The snow packs as the skier tracks” People forget. Come and join the party dressed to kill. Like the (child of the 60s) Vampire Slayer always says; “Kids, Don’t do drugs.”

I remember the first time I heard "Bargain." The spring of 73 - on 8 track. I was 12. My first reaction was that this is less a song than an experience. When the song was over I actually felt mentally drained (in a good way) from the experience. That's how powerful it was. The feeling was something like the feeling you get after going on one of the DisneyWorld indoor rides like "It's a small world," Although the song's theme ("I'll pay any price") was not a new one, I felt as if I'd never heard the concept before. And haven't heard it since. To me, "Bargain" is one of the most underrated rock songs ever.

Alex, you were both right and wrong. John Entwistle does sound like he's playing slap style bass, but technically speaking, Entwistle didn't really slap. His thunderous string attack was probably best described as a "Typewriter Technique". John often used three and sometimes four fingers and he positioned them fairly far away from the string. He would fling his fingers downward and let gravity and the weight of his fingers assist him in hammering the strings. He fanned his fingers in succession with kind of a rolling motion, like many people do, when they impatiently tap all four fingers, beginning with the pinky, against a table top or a desk. The typewriter technique, allowed John to play very light and fast 32nd notes or very heavy and thunderous notes, depending on how hard he "typed". During his early days, John also played a Rickenbacker with a very low neck action adjustment and bright, roundwound Rotosound strings. He played a lot of higher notes, near the treble end of the neck and he turned up the treble on his bass. This gave him a bright, ringing tone. The true slap bass technique relies on a twist or roll of the wrist and slapping or bouncing your thumb off the strings. That's not how Entwistle usually played.

"Eminence Front" is a very "Townshend" song from The Who, more reminiscent of a lot of his solo stuff after the band than the rest of The Who's catalogue, and definitely also very 80s as you say. Written and sung by Townshend, "Baba O'Reilly" / "Teenage Wasteland" being as you mention early perhaps the closest comparison in their other works as far as structure and progressions. Interestingly Daltry never much cared for most of the album in general, Eminence Front being the one song he felt was really worth actually releasing. Next up for The Who should definitely be "You Better You Bet". I'm also very curious to see how you guys respond to some of Ozzie's solo stuff after Black Sabbath; "I Don't Want to Stop" and "No More Tears" in particular though he had a lot of good ones.

Back in the 80's, artists "like The Who, The Stones, Eric Clapton, etc." were changing their sound from the power productions to more of a "club sound" to dance to .. In the 80's the young people were filling dance clubs (bigger cities had a ladies nite at a dance club every night of the week) and the music reflected that ..... The Who got a whole new category of fans (younger than the original Who fan) that liked their music for different reasons... The Who were able to survive as a band because of this.

The Song. This is a Pete song written when he was still in mourning for Moon and battling some personal demons. You would do better to listen to his solo album Empty Glass. There are several great songs on that album. Plus it has Simon Phillips on drums who is totally awesome. Kenny Jones. Now that you've heard a song with him on drums, you might want to listen to The Faces and The Small Faces. He absolutely rocks steady. The Bass. John wasn't playing an Alembic bass, as he usually did. It was a Rickenbacker with roto sound roundwound strings. This track is so jarring because the Alembic bass we are used to hearing has such a full mid-range and mellow high range and the Rickenbacker is all treble. I don't know what kind of rig he played through on the recording or if he plugged straight into the board, but that bass is definitely present in the recording.

Small Faces and Faces are definitely a good path to trip down... 👍🏻 A&A, I agree that Daltrey’s voice is better than Townshend’s (it melted my little everything like butter), but if you listen to their solo albums you might realize that Daltrey may have been a major player in The Who’s sound, but Townshend was the true mastermind...

@@harriotteworthington3147 many many bands have multiple singers. beatles, eagles, journey had duets, plus fleetwood mac, the band , the cars, pink floyd and the who and of course there are many many more. its funny they dont know too much about the who, pete does and can sing. the who are pretty pretty famous wouldnt you say? this whole reactions video is pretty weird genre now. most people are amazed by hearing these older groups and bands because its strange bands today stink, but these 2 guys actually sometimes critique these songs, which is hysterical. who are they to critique anything? at this point just about any song their critique is a classic all time hit. to hear them criticize bruce springsteens voice which is his style. or say the too much horns in a chicago song in some parts or thin lizzy song was so so or bad company song was eh not so great in some parts. its all so laughable. so i imagine that they CANT LISTEN to classic rocks stations? so they can keep pretending? notice they dont play any Led Zep? cause they heard that all already? then how do you not know most of the other classic rock stuff? sure there are always deep cuts or some bands or songs you dont know. i get it. but sgt pepper they want to play cause they never heard it? its embarrassing. also you have to bring up the time in which these albums came out. they were cutting edge produced for their times. it matters when these songs came out. many bands influenced other bands. but hey these 2 guys are good actors i guess to many people the one guy wears pink floyd and led zep shirts but doesnt know the who? Agree research can be helpful. Missing on Moon not being on the track AND not knowing it was Townsend singing. Smh. I pay attention to you guys because of your musical smarts. Other reactors who are musically clueless get a pass. You guys know more and know better. One other point. They never pandered to an audience. Nothing was ever done to attract fans. Townsend was doing a lot of singing at this point in his life. I would ask you to check out his solo albums. Seriously better than Daltrey's solo efforts. I guess I got to cut you slack....college is hard.

I meant no disrespect. All I meant was things like the singer or drummer has changed and/or why. Also. Growing up I used to find it fascinating that the Zepplin and Clapton came out of the Yardbirds, and all the things that led to. The Band was Dylan’s back up band, etc. I’m not saying do research on a first time band. But once you do a band a few times, it would be nice for the fans (of you guys) and the band itself to know you are not just listening to great music for views but are also listening for music history and knowledge. And I love when someone tells me something I did not know about a band or song I know and/or love.
