What is Eminence Front? It’s a put-on. (Pete Townsend sometimes sings; “It’s Bulls__t”.) The song is about a Cocaine Party for society’s elite “The snow packs as the skier tracks” People forget. Come and join the party dressed to kill. Like the (child of the 60s) Vampire Slayer always says; “Kids, Don’t do drugs.”

I remember the first time I heard "Bargain." The spring of 73 - on 8 track. I was 12. My first reaction was that this is less a song than an experience. When the song was over I actually felt mentally drained (in a good way) from the experience. That's how powerful it was. The feeling was something like the feeling you get after going on one of the DisneyWorld indoor rides like "It's a small world," Although the song's theme ("I'll pay any price") was not a new one, I felt as if I'd never heard the concept before. And haven't heard it since. To me, "Bargain" is one of the most underrated rock songs ever.

"Eminence Front" is a very "Townshend" song from The Who, more reminiscent of a lot of his solo stuff after the band than the rest of The Who's catalogue, and definitely also very 80s as you say. Written and sung by Townshend, "Baba O'Reilly" / "Teenage Wasteland" being as you mention early perhaps the closest comparison in their other works as far as structure and progressions. Interestingly Daltry never much cared for most of the album in general, Eminence Front being the one song he felt was really worth actually releasing. Next up for The Who should definitely be "You Better You Bet". I'm also very curious to see how you guys respond to some of Ozzie's solo stuff after Black Sabbath; "I Don't Want to Stop" and "No More Tears" in particular though he had a lot of good ones.

You’ve heard Townshend sing before, actually! He sings the “don’t cry, don’t raise your eye, it’s only teenage wasteland” lyric in Baba O’Riley! So you’ve heard half the band sing, I recommend “Boris the Spider” by The Who to get a taste of Entwistle’s voice... this song is considered to have the first death growl inspired voice in music. Listen to that to hear Entwistle, and if you wanna hear Moon the Loon sing, then listen to their rendition of “Barbara Ann” or “Do Me Good.” I think you’ll get a kick!

The Song. This is a Pete song written when he was still in mourning for Moon and battling some personal demons. You would do better to listen to his solo album Empty Glass. There are several great songs on that album. Plus it has Simon Phillips on drums who is totally awesome. Kenny Jones. Now that you've heard a song with him on drums, you might want to listen to The Faces and The Small Faces. He absolutely rocks steady. The Bass. John wasn't playing an Alembic bass, as he usually did. It was a Rickenbacker with roto sound roundwound strings. This track is so jarring because the Alembic bass we are used to hearing has such a full mid-range and mellow high range and the Rickenbacker is all treble. I don't know what kind of rig he played through on the recording or if he plugged straight into the board, but that bass is definitely present in the recording.

Alex, you were both right and wrong. John Entwistle does sound like he's playing slap style bass, but technically speaking, Entwistle didn't really slap. His thunderous string attack was probably best described as a "Typewriter Technique". John often used three and sometimes four fingers and he positioned them fairly far away from the string. He would fling his fingers downward and let gravity and the weight of his fingers assist him in hammering the strings. He fanned his fingers in succession with kind of a rolling motion, like many people do, when they impatiently tap all four fingers, beginning with the pinky, against a table top or a desk. The typewriter technique, allowed John to play very light and fast 32nd notes or very heavy and thunderous notes, depending on how hard he "typed". During his early days, John also played a Rickenbacker with a very low neck action adjustment and bright, roundwound Rotosound strings. He played a lot of higher notes, near the treble end of the neck and he turned up the treble on his bass. This gave him a bright, ringing tone. The true slap bass technique relies on a twist or roll of the wrist and slapping or bouncing your thumb off the strings. That's not how Entwistle usually played.

Back in the 80's, artists "like The Who, The Stones, Eric Clapton, etc." were changing their sound from the power productions to more of a "club sound" to dance to .. In the 80's the young people were filling dance clubs (bigger cities had a ladies nite at a dance club every night of the week) and the music reflected that ..... The Who got a whole new category of fans (younger than the original Who fan) that liked their music for different reasons... The Who were able to survive as a band because of this.

I got started on The Who with the album, this song is from. The 1982 "It's Hard" album. I also watched the first pay per view concert of their "farewell tour", "The Who Rocks America, Live from Toronto December 17th, 1982." I was eleven years old @ the time & I've been a fan, ever since. Kenney Jones was the drummer on that album as well as with the previous album, "Face Dances." The Who's last Keith Moon era album was, "Who Are You?" The Who's style of playing changed with Kenney Jones as their drummer, but it was still very much The Who. Sadly, John Entwistle their phenomenal original bassist died in June of 2002. They were set to embark on a major tour, right @ time of his death. Pino Palidino stepped in to play bass, to insure the tour go on & all the stage hands stayed in business. Plus each venue of the tour had sold out shows, that needed the show to go on. In each incarnation of The Who they've sounded a bit different from the previous ones, but @ the soul of the band. They have been the only entity that they could be, THE WHO. Pete Townshend, has always been the principle song writer of the band. When John was alive, he would contribute songs on many of The Who's albums. Starting with their second album, "A Quick One, While He's Away." John's style of writing was completely different from the style Pete would use. But both were excellent storytellers in their own right, Pete even requested John write two tracks on their "Tommy" album, as the subject matter was too difficult for him to process. In fact aside from the "My Generation" & "Quadrophenia" albums, I believe John contributed songs on all the albums of his era. Roger Daltrey had written some material for certain albums or collaborated with Pete on occasion, but he didn't venture into the writing of songs as much. He was content with singing the songs Pete wrote for the band. Keith Moon I believe only wrote maybe two songs, in his time with The Who. Which were extremely different songs indeed, to anything that was being put out by either Pete, or John. The Who: The Greatest Band, Ever. Long Live Rock, Long Live The Who. Be Lucky, Be Happy.

I meant no disrespect. All I meant was things like the singer or drummer has changed and/or why. Also. Growing up I used to find it fascinating that the Zepplin and Clapton came out of the Yardbirds, and all the things that led to. The Band was Dylan’s back up band, etc. I’m not saying do research on a first time band. But once you do a band a few times, it would be nice for the fans (of you guys) and the band itself to know you are not just listening to great music for views but are also listening for music history and knowledge. And I love when someone tells me something I did not know about a band or song I know and/or love.

We always thought it kinda sounded like he was singing "Everything's Fucked", thus we would sing it that way. Great tune. Also Athena off that album was another great song...

I think I felt the same way when this song was first released, it didn't feel at all like a Who song and I didn't care for it much. Having said that, it definitely grew on me and I appreciate more now than I did then.

Please react to anything from The Who’s “Live at Leeds” it captures them at the peak of their powers. Take it from someone who’s been listening to them since the Sixties, the whole album is dripping with sauce.

I only have "My Wife" on an Ultimate Collection download. I have to say, while I like the song, a lot, the audio mix was awful, and Entwhistle's vocal is indistinct. Are there better engineered versions of this track?

The Foss I know the album Who’s Next was remastered in 2003, I have not heard it but it seems to have very good reviews from Die-Hard Who fans. More so than the 1995 remaster it seems

Next has gotta be “A Quick One, While He’s Away” Live at the Rolling Stones’ Rock and Roll Circus. You cannot take your eyes off of them. By the time Eminence Front came out in The Who’s career Keith Moon had died and they were operating with a drummer that didn’t have the bombastic playing style that Keith did. He died in 1978 I believe, and they never really regained that distinct sound.

Yep, live performance is a crucial part of the Who's style (especially the visual component). "Young Man Blues" from the 1970 Isle of Wight is another classic.

Although I love this song for it's funky groove, it's not CLASSIC Who by any standards. If I were to rank all their songs, i'd have it at maybe 25th or so...To get back to The Who we all have become to expect i'd throw on some 'Bargain' or '5.15'. That being said as Alex likes to say, Good, fair reaction. I'd have reacted the same way.

Friday ! It’s always fucking great to talk about The Who, though I’m a little disappointed by the selection of this song. The Who have sooooo many great tunes that are far better that this one. Pretty much any song on Who’s Next is a superior song. Eminence Front is probably the best tune on what is perhaps The Who’s weakest studio effort IMO. It’s a fine post-Moon track and it has a funky groove which is a different wrinkle. Pete sings with some juice in his vocal. I’d love LOVE for you guys to react to the entirety of Live at Leeds or Who’s Next. Those whole records are bangers. Anyway, here’s just some of the great tracks that I’d recommend in the future that have the energy and passion we hope for in a Who listening experience: Bargain, The Punk & The Godfather, Young Man Blues (Live @ Leeds), The Seeker, Going Mobile, Join Together, Naked Eye, 5:15, However Much I Booze, Dreaming From the Waist, You Better You Bet, Substitute. Please don’t take this as a negative comment. “I’m just calling it as I see it”. Your analysis is always a pleasure to hear. I’m happy as hell that you even make these videos. Also Deacon Blues, Lol. Have a great fucking weekend, Andy & Alex !
