25:15 my dad has a diametrically opposed list -- he has a list of how much money he has borrowed _from_ us, his kids. He does this bc his mom used to nickle and dime him; she even went so far as to steal his mail and cash his paychecks herself, when he was in his teens. She never repaid a single cent of that money. Dad thought that was unfair, so he made it a point to _never_ do that to his own children; if he ever needed to borrow money for any reason, he would make sure to note how much it was and he _always_ pays us back as soon as he can manage it. I always tell him not to worry about paying me back in a timely fashion (I am broke, so I _do_ need the money returned) because I know him and his ethics; and I know, with the same certainty as the sky being blue and water being wet, that he'll return that money. Therefore, if he needs it, he can have it and take all the time in the world to pay it back. Honestly in italy if we had a school party we were all instructed to do it potluck style. Barely ever did a teacher pay for all of it. We would set it up ourselves. We each bring a cheap thing and go to town. One guy one year brought rice cakes as that's all he had at home and I love ricecakes personally. Some think they taste like cardboard but the slightly salted ones or the corn ones are so nice they're addictive. Literally you could've brought discount supermarket chips if you felt embarrassed to show up with off brand cola and everyone was happy as long as there was food. In 1971 I got my first full time job at a utility company. Two years later I bought my first house and got married (in that order). It sounds to me like that is nearly impossible to do nowadays.
@sevenember33327 күн бұрын
It really is. That same starter house you bought is likely $200,000 minimum, depending on location and size. Rough calculations are that it costs $500,000 to raise a single child to adulthood and maybe pay for college based on current expense estimates. I’m 42, my husband is 52, and the only way we can afford to maybe buy a place of our own where we live is for certain family members to pass on and leave inheritances. We passed on having kids in large part because even 15 years ago we knew we could never afford to raise them
@georgejones35267 күн бұрын
@ I was 20 when I bought the house. It was your basic box on a slab, 3 bedroom, 1 bath, living, dining, kitchen and utility room. It cost $24,000 in 1973, just before mortgage interest rates went crazy. My payments were $138.43 a month and my salary was 138.50 a week. Made it by 7 cents. It was ducted for a/c but I had to buy and install the unit myself. This was in North Lauderdale, Fla., so a/c was a must.
@sevenember33327 күн бұрын
@@georgejones3526 Okay…so a brief search would have the house you mentioned at a likely minimum of $400K but probably more realistically over $600K, but again, it also depends on the location. Most of the Millennial and younger folks working are making maybe $60K a year, gross, maximum on average. That’s the same as the down payment for your old house, if they don’t mind a higher mortgage payment and interest rate. Basically, folks are barely making more than the national average from twenty years ago while the cost of living has skyrocketed and the quality of products has gone down, forcing people to buy more often. So yeah, it really has become nearly impossible to buy a house for most folks these days. But really, your concern and understanding is greatly appreciated, friend!

I think the lightbulbs thing is in reference to the fact/myth that the original Thomas Edison lightbulbs could last for centuries but companies made them burn out faster so you have to pay them again. It might be true, it might be false, but that’s that I think they mean by “Original Lightbulbs.”
@PrototypeSpaceMonkey10 күн бұрын
The original carbon-filament bulbs from Edison's days could last for ages, but they were prohibitively expensive, had extremely poor efficiency, and their output decreases over time. They won't "break" exactly, but they'll barely emit any light after a while. Later tungsten filament bulbs had vastly superior performance but had to compromise between light output and the lifespan of the bulb. The longer you want your bulb to last, the less light it produces per watt of power consumed. Light bulb companies then calculated what would be the sweet spot between "acceptable lifespan" vs "acceptable power consumption" for most customers and agreed among each other to err in favor of their own bank accounts as opposed to the power companies (obviously) but really not by a statistically significant amount. With today's energy prices carbon filament bulbs would be completely unviable. There's a reason why large companies/buildings replaced all their incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs, then again with LED. That reason is money.
@DavidRichardson1538 күн бұрын
It's probably true. Look at pantyhose. It's damn near impossible to wear them without them just ripping. You could even be just laying limp, not doing anything or having anything done, and they will still rip. The very first pantyhose were strong and tough enough to tow a truck with and not tear.
@DavidRichardson1538 күн бұрын
@@PrototypeSpaceMonkeyThere is one light bulb in one specific fire station (I believe it's an FDNY fire station, but I may be wrong) that has been on constantly without ever being switched off or changed out. It still provides quite a bit of light - not as much as a modern light, but still more than enough to see in the dark. One detail you may notice is its filament; it is thicker and MUCH longer than pretty much any and all other incandescent bulbs, likely as a measure to reduce heat stress to the filament. The light bulb is over 100 years old. There is a webcam that shows it just for people to see it run and to check if it ever goes out. It has been confirmed that the bulb was manufactured before planned obsolescence was introduced.
@PrototypeSpaceMonkey8 күн бұрын
@ That kind of conspiratorial thinking falls apart pretty quickly if you consider the existence of communist countries, universities or non-profit science initiatives. If it were true, the Soviet Union's National Light Bulb Company would have to have been part of a global conspiracy to line the pockets of a hand full of western CEO's instead of supplying all of the USSR with superior bulbs that never break. And not a single scientist or electrician in the history of the human race ever spoke up about it.
@PrototypeSpaceMonkey8 күн бұрын
@ Yeah, I know the famous "centennial bulb", it's a custom made carbon filament bulb. And there's a reason it's the only one of it's kind still working. It's been on constantly without getting turned on and off, and it barely produces any light anymore. It's current output efficiency is 1, maybe 2% and that's being generous. But if you want to start a company that sells $200 light bulbs that consume a ton of power and barely produce any light, be my guest. It's a free country. Just be careful! The Light bulb illuminati might send their Men in Blacklight after you to make you disappear!
