I think this adaptation perfectly catches the tone of the book, better than the movie with Kate Beckinsale. Also, Mr Darcy is perfect on paper, but it's the Mr Knightleys of the world who could swoon me any time :). And Jeremy Northam plays the character very well.

Why does his age matter? Mr Knightley might have had more time to perfect his character but he was still more lighthearted and complex and that is not the result of learnt behaviour which his age could give him. I love Mr Darcy just as much as the next Austen-reading girl but he's easier to describe and less realistic than Mr Knightley.

I think Sanditon is closest. However do take a break between 1st and 2nd season, because you will need it. 3th Season is out about a week and I think the romance compares best to P&P.

Current moviemaking is all about stunning visuals, however, at the expense of cohesive and compelling storytelling. And a great story cannot have just a pretty picture going for it, that's not good enough. That's why you like this version better.

John Knightley is Emma's brother-in-law. George Knightley is her longtime friend and (as she discovers to her recent surprise) love interest. Meanwhile, George has his own feelings, and travels to his brother's home to seek out John's advice on his romantic intentions. Emma is scared that those intentions may be focused on one of her girlfriends. If so, she will lose him forever. If John advises Emma's way, she'll be elated ("I love John!") But if he advises against Emma, she'll be devastated ("I hate John!") The audience, and Emma, are on tenterhooks until George's return and the big reveal.

The characters in this 1996 version are all very likeable unlike the 2020 version where the two main characters in particular have no redeeming features. This proves that more money and latest technology don’t guarantee a better film.

Because trailers are normally prepared well before a production is finished they often use somewhat anonymous (i.e., not Jaws or Star Wars say) pre-existing film music. Some old scores are repeatedly used (until they get less anonymous and overused). In the 2000s bits of the Gladiator score and bits of Requiem for A Dream were everywhere in trailers; before that Dragon-The Bruce Lee Story, The Untouchables, and bits of various James Horner and Thomas Newman scores including for that for Little Women were all over the place. Just finished reading the book and would definitely not characterize it as a comedy. There was one funny part where I laughed out loud, but in retrospect I can’t even remember which part that was. It stood out from the rest of the book because the book is not a comedy! 🤷🏻‍♀️
