I do like the way this adaptation shows the hordes of servants and staff the Regency landed gentry would have had. A large estate like Donwell might have a staff of 30 or 40, including 20 or so staff in the house (rather than working the gardens and land): cooks, many maids and footmen, butler, housekeeper, valet. A lot of adaptions make it appear that the wealthy families live largely alone, but in reality servants would have been around them a lot of the time. I understand why though: more actors clutter up a scene, distract the viewer, make managing the production more expensive and complex. It’s a nice touch here, especially with Mrs. E prattling on about the enjoyment of doing things with your own hand 🙄🤣

I really like how Emma is played from 6:15 onwards. It really gets across that she herself doesn't really take any crap.

"Oh--are you fond of sheep, then, Mrs Elton?" Andrew Davies really has the knack of adding a few little jokes in that Jane Austen would never write, but that still work because they flow completely with Austen's down to earth attitude and her ridicule of people who take themselves too seriously and don't say what they mean. He used almost exactly the same one in Pride and Prejudice when Mr Collins talks about Lady Catherine's expensive chimneypiece: Wickham asks Mr Collins "her Ladyship is fond of a good blaze, then?" And he has no reply. Works every time apparently lol

If you look closely you can see it wasn't Emma, it was one of Harriet's friends.

Mrs. Elton has the oddest accent in this, half Irish half American with the odd twang of the sort of RP English every so often. I am guessing it was done to show off that she wasn't 'well bred'

This Emma is so strange. She never gives me the impression to have honest feelings.
