Eh, not as invested in the Sweeney. But Thompson is surprising. Super adorable for a Mrs. Lovett.

Heh. Thompson is a better singer than Terfel is an actor, is how I'd put it. But I think he does fine for the most part, and the show is so nearly through-sung that his pipes make him a good choice for a concert production at any rate.

Emma stole the damned show right out from under Bryn.......she was WONDERFUL!!!

Have to respectfully disagree! Bryn Terfel is the best Sweeney in my heart! I was a little underwhelmed with Emma Thompson's performance in this. I thought Bryn's performance was beautifully poignant and powerful.

@@Tessnesss the only bit of acting I've seen from Bryn Terfel through the multitude of clips I've seen is the bewildered look after "Popping pussy's into pies". Apart from that, there's nothing. If it was just a stand and sing production then it would be ok, but everyone else is fully in character while he sounds like he's just absently reading the lines right off a script. His worst offense was Epiphany. Were was the anger? The hatred? I don't believe that something in Sweeney snapped during his performance, just that he's going through the motions.

Just the other night I buttonholed a Lincoln Center producer at a screening of this recording and asked him about a commercial release. He said Sondheim says no, at least for now. But a little research on the internet and very little money might get you what you seek. [Cough cough, say no more cough.]

Is there a dvd of this?

Terfel's voice is amazing, but Hearn had a just a bit more of the insanely enraged soul underlying. Emma is just perfect, though I kinda missed Angela Lansbury's patting of her ribs at "with limited wind".

It's Meatloaf!

No, it's Bryn Terfel, although......he IS quite the beefy guy. He sings MUCH BETTER, though........

Looks like him I almost thought the same thing myself. Meatloaf's real name is Marvin Lee Aday.

To each their own. Definitely. I've liked all productions (including the film), but my personal favorite Todd and Lovett is the 2012 London revival-- Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton
