For me one of my absolute favorite parts of comedy is the fact that I can laugh at anything and everything. I struggle with social interactions somewhat, and I love comedy because I know everything is a joke and I don't have to think for so long that I laugh five minutes too late. I was fortunate to be able to see Ashley in Toronto just yesterday, and I absolutely loved it.

Ashley is totally right about the fear thing regarding fat shaming: We shame people for it and tell each other how simple it is to lose weight - because we want to feel like it is something we can absolutely control and thus it will never happen to us.
@mayal442 Жыл бұрын
100%. The fear/pity cycle is so strong. That’s why fatphobia is such an accurate word. People fear not only ending up “that way,” but they fear how they will be treated if they end up “that way” because they will be discriminated against.

I love episodes with Emma! Also, loving this "new Era"of the pod. I've listened to the pod from episode 1 to now at least twice, and I'm happy to see you say, "obviously some of this is satire, its comedy..as a listener you need to know where my heart is." I've always thought you're so good at being open and showing your real self in-between the jokes and the riffs, you shouldn't have to footnote every joke. Keep doing you, Ash.❤

FYI, choice paralysis, like many disordered behaviors, comes on a spectrum of severity and just happens to more strongly affects people with ADHD. Obviously everyone experiences it to some degree, but the symptoms are often more severe to the point of causing legitimate and ongoing dysfunction in someone's life when they have ADHD. That's also the case for many symptoms/diagnosis criteria for ADHD, and other disorders

So many symptoms of ADHD are experienced by others and may be shared with other disorders like general anxiety, PTSD etc. but what differentiates is severity and a collection of associated symptoms of say executive dysfunction and inattention and whatnot at once causing disorder and affecting your ability to function "normally". All that to say it's easy to look at some things and say "that's everyone not just ADHD" and **not be wrong**, but it's not wrong to say that those symptoms are ADHD as well. Humanity is weird, man.
@leonevis Жыл бұрын
Maddie is right that it’s the severity/frequency that pushes it into the category of a disorder and not just a universal human experience. Also, for a lot of us late diagnosed ADHDers, it’s definitely normal to suddenly see every little behavior and quirk you have as related to your ADHD for a while. It’s just a part of developing/adjusting your sense of identity in light of new information imo. I was like that in the first year or so of my diagnosis. My perspective is a little more grounded now and I don’t view *everything* as a symptom, but I can recognize when my ADHD is interfering beyond what is “normal” for most.
@ashgavs Жыл бұрын
Yes I agree with you guys! I was just trying to say don’t worry if this happens to you it can be a normal thing but it didn’t come off that way! My apologies.
@mayal442 Жыл бұрын
Nah you’re all good. As someone with anxiety I also find myself being like “that’s not an ADHD thing I have that too” when in reality so many things overlap in different neurosis. I think sometimes with identity stuff it can feel lonely when you don’t fit a mold, but at the same time it’s cool to see how many of us neurodivergent peeps navigate the world in similar ways, even if our brains are coming from different places!
@emjoy36 Жыл бұрын
It’s really crazy how much overlap Adhd has with other things, that’s why I can be so hard to diagnose sometimes.

I took guanfacine at one point for adhd and it is known to lower sex drive but that’s not a super common side effect. Guanfacine pronounced GWANFUHSCENE 🤣 - your friendly neighborhood lesbian therapist. Also, such a real convo going on about the strip club. People who identify as women tend to be put off by the objectification of women because we have all experienced the dark side of it… so at strip clubs we are like, I enjoy what I see but I feel guilty for contributing to objectifying women. I’m always so shy and awkward at strip clubs because I want to be extra respectful. But it’s true that so many are queer or prefer dancing for other women.

Firstly, I think many of the best comedians on the planet have done DV jokes. This is separate from Matt Rife and just a general take, but I do DV jokes. If it’s hard for you to imagine a good joke about a bad topic, my comedy might not be for you or maybe watch more comedy. Bill Burrs incredible DV joke comes to mind. You can talk about sensitive topics respectfully and in a funny way. Secondly this was recorded so long before his special dropped.

@@ashgavsi personally didn’t find his joke funny, but just because he told a joke that wasn’t funny about a sensitive topic doesn’t mean he’s a horrible person and deserves nothing, which is the conclusion a lot of people have jumped to. that’s a wild conclusion.
