Only Emma could make a closet overview into standup comedy. Love the direction her channel is headed. The access to brands and money may not be relatable, but her energy will always be one of the silly girls. Remember she’s young and deserves compassion like anybody else.

As someone who studies climate change and takes passion in learning about the consumption and trend norms of the fashion industry. I really hope that everyone who watches this video focuses on one particular message that Emma sends out. The message that people should not purge to buy more, make what you have out of your closet already. Please do not get inspired by her purge, but by her change in mindset. She is admitting that the cycle of buying and purging DOES NOT work! Trends are ever-changing. Also, although it isn't mentioned in this video, the quality of clothing keeps getting worse. So use what you have, whether it means dyeing the fabric, tailoring it or upcycling!!
@HeatherFoster-nk5vn2 ай бұрын
I agree with her sentiment and I hope it is genuine. It does really appear as though shes simply going through another fashion phase though. Right now, many people are poor and disenfranchised so I wouldn't be surprised if the rich start emulating the poor and drastically reducing their wardrobes down to the most basic elements to come across as more relatable or less materialistic. There is also this sense of optimization. A big complaint being that she is overwhelmed by her options in a way that is stressful and time consuming. I assume that your average citizen does not have to worry about having so many clothes that it takes them two hours to put together an experimental outfit. Many WISH they had that problem lol

I'm genuinely shocked that so many people are expecting a 23 year old millionaire who is invited to fashion week, the Met Gala, is friends with the Kardashians and other celebrities, has 12 million subscribers, a successful podcast and business to be relatable. She is a wealthy public figure who has worked her way up to the point she is now and is being open about her experiences and reflections of her life, habits, downfalls, and personal value. This is literally her job so of course she has more clothes than you? She admits how gluttonous she was and at the end of the day, yes this being ~5% of her clothing items is incredibly un-relatable to YOU but so what? Why should she relate to you? Just be glad that she's improving herself. She will never be relatable anymore and will probably be out of touch at some points but you need to just accept that.

As someone who struggled with overconsumption as a teen just like Emma was I can relate to this so much, feeling the need to own as many pieces and different kinds of clothes as possible (and makeup) to feel like I was “fashionable” or “trendy” when it did the exact opposite affect for me and made me feel lost and frustrated with my own closet and style. I’m 20 now and decided to deep clean that same closet a couple of months ago. It is so small now and the amount of stuff I got rid of made me feel shameful but I also felt really good knowing the self control I have now of not buying stuff I don’t need specially just because it’s trendy it popular now I buy (rarely) stuff that I know I’ll wear a lot until it’s rags. At the moment I just have in my closet my favorite pieces and stuff I have been wearing for years and still do and have always loved, never felt more proud of myself. If anyone is struggling know that it is hard but you’ll get to this point of normal consumption and self control and it’s the best feeling ever, thank you so much Emma for helping me realize this and encouraging me to do the same about my problem, take care everyone 💕

This is a reminder to be thoughtful when “decluttering”! Some clothing you might not like now but you’ll be really glad to still have it in a few years! Especially since the trends are leaning very minimal atm. I would recommend donating/selling the stuff that doesn’t fit and that you really don’t like, but the stuff you do like but don’t often wear can go in a bin in that back of your closet or under your bed! And then you can shop your old wardrobe in a year or a few months :)

I adore her just being in her own vibe. It doesn’t matter that we as the public eye like her clothing style or not, it’s so cool and inspiring to just see her get so passionate about a shirt or the detail on an article of clothing. This is the whole point of fashion. It’s fun and it’s all your own. As someone who cares a lot about what people think about me, I hope I can have this freedom one day. She’s always been super cool.

as a stylist myself, a capsule wardrobe is such an essential!! So proud of you emma!! Capsule wardrobes are amazing because like you said, every piece can pretty much be paired with each other. The color pallets also plays a huge role in this, neutrals are an essential to a capsule wardrobe. A pop of color is also important though! I love keeping colors in sweaters, vests, bags and even belts!

"I have a capsule wardrobe" proceeds to show me more tops than I have ever owned in my 19 years of existence in the next five minutes and then says that she never wore some of those pieces 💀
@Andy_00172 ай бұрын
Yeah, honestly, she's just doing the classic influencer thing, which is to adopt the aesthetic of a subculture or group, completely superficially without actually living that lifestyle. This is definitely her just trying to adopt the minimalist aesthetic (which is on trend, so what is she really doing different) of having plain neutrals that are layerable and interchangeable. But the point of minimalism is that you have like 3 pairs of nice jeans and like 5 flattering tank tops etc etc. This is still so many clothes, and I understand that for her it might be a downsize, but you can't seriously look us in the eyes and be like "my capsule wardrobe 🫶". Meanwhile, it fills out your entire walk-in closet that is so big
@moongirl88072 ай бұрын
@Andy_0017 also she gets to wear the most fancy clothes on the planet literally for free or even gets paid to represent them. I like Emma's development and her still doing better and better vlogs, but this is so similar to bestdressed who was all about dressing smart and thrifting and now she only wears luxury clothes and earns her money through...idk what honestly? They both build their own career to get to this point but it's really astounding how money and influence do change people's view on things.
@mellody.gmd052 ай бұрын
@@Andy_0017 yes exactly, I wonder if all of these "class timeless staples" will be thrown out in 1-2 years because its not in trend anymore and also saying "I wear this all the time" to 500 different things made me wonder how often she was actually able to wear them and what her definition of all the time is compared to mine
@Andy_00172 ай бұрын
@melgem2252 yeah I love Emma's videos, but she is not beating the echo chamberlain allegations with this one. It just feels like she wanted to reinvent her look to present as more mature and sleek, which is fine, but don't sit here and tell me "look how small my wardrobe is now". Trends in general have been starting to lean more towards this kind of simple normcore office look, and away from the more extravagant colors and shapes. So she's really just following the swing of what's in and what's out, and I agree especially for someone like her who is so involved in fashion, half of this stuff will never be worn in 2 years time
@Maria-020202 ай бұрын
@@Andy_0017 so true. I wouldn’t mind if she did a video about a new style she found but to act like you have hindsight now and are above buying into trends is pointless. I understand most stuff was collected over years but it looks and sounds like she got a lot of pieces to match this new style that just happens to be sleek and simple. It’s just as much of a temporary trend as the bright trendy clothes she got rid of.
@s.a.m.3965Ай бұрын
I definitely like the idea of going through my closet and keeping only pieces that I actually (would) wear and having some basic pieces to mix and match. In looking at what Emma decided to keep I would also suggest that color should be one of the reasons to keep an item or purge it. Black makes her look washed out, as do the beige colors. If you're going to keep a piece of clothing it should not only be a piece of clothing that you like, but it should also compliment your skin tone. I highly suspect that Emma is a "Spring" on the color wheel and she should look for (and keep) pieces in that color range. What's the point of keeping a piece of clothing that may look good on its own, but that washes you out as soon as you put it on?

Jesus, people will always find problems EVERYWHERE. Some of the people criticizing her for not being a "true minimalist" or saying "there are people without food, and you have two pairs of similar Prada shoes!!!" are really just projecting. I’m not saying it’s wrong to feel the way some of you do-I get that it might not feel relatable-but honestly, this seems more about your way of thinking than hers. If you look at Emma throughout her career, she’s been nothing but a decent human being, trying to figure her shit out while growing up on camera, building a business on camera, and having people around her who both support her and also mock her for every little inconsistency or opinion they find worth pointing out. I’m not rich, I don’t have a ton of clothes, but I still really enjoy watching her talk about silhouettes and colors. I find it inspiring in my own way and def entertaining. She built this life on her own, and she deserves to live it on her own terms. Some of these people don’t need to feel so fucking threatened by her designer clothing. Stop acting like you’ve got your views so perfectly figured out that you need to lecture on what a “true minimalist” is or if her pieces are in your view "trendy". Let’s just enjoy Emma doing her thing. It's not that serious.

I think for some people, me included, the expectations were just different to the reality haha. Like in the podcast it sounded like she only had a couple of items of clothing, like when she said she now has a, quote, „normal [person‘s] amount of clothing“ or when she said „1 black bag is really all you need“. That’s what I expected to see on this video and reality turned out quite differently lol. I think that’s why people are so „shocked“ (or even offended like you said). Cuz most people just associate something different when someone says they have a capsule wardrobe. Most people, I‘d assume or at least hope, are still happy for her, though, and proud of her for the life she built for herself, I don’t think that’s the issue :) Sorry if my English is a bit bad, it’s not my first language but I hope you can understand what i mean haha!
