For those who know, lapis lazuli is exceedingly rare and actually running out. Old ultramarine blues used to be made with the stone, but because of its rarity, chemical processes were pursued in order to preserve what little we have left. It is an absolute treasure to have a lapis lazuli pigment in your watercolour kit!!

Doing a monochrome study is a really great idea and helps to identify value in colors. Having the right color values all throughout the piece can make all the difference in a whether your art is good or great. 👍

Such a great monochromatic painting. And the color is amazing…. Used by Michelangelo to paint his angels and Johannes Vermeer to paint a scarf on The Girl with a Pearl Earring, not to mention many other artists throughout the art history.

Love your videos! Just wanted to tell you how to pronounce the color since I'm a speech pathologist and I can't resist. You said Lapis correctly, but the next word is laz- (like "has"), u- (like "you"), li- (like "lie"). Hope that helps! Your videos really help me as an artist. 💓

That feeling you get when it comes to water/paint in your brush is artistic intuition and you have developed or were born with good artistic intuition. You make painting look so easy! Emma, I have a problem “dabbing” or wiping my brush off onto a paper towel for fear of “ wasting “ my expensive, precious paint. I know that this fear I have is a culprit for unneeded mistakes and I feel it’s holding me back. Any sage advice from you or your viewers on how to get over this “ fear of product waste” that I have?

It’s mostly water not a waste of expensive paint. You’re wasting more by using too much water or paint on your paper. That means you’ve wasted time, paper and experience learning. You are learning and in time you will gain more control. Trust the process. You’re worth it. Placing all that worry on yourself takes the joy from using watercolor. Have fun learning guilt free. There’s enough worry in the world without one more.😊👍💯

Okay, so I've seen a lot of these tonal videos that "are do as I say, not as I do." For instance, I saw a video that says "just tap every so lightly and don't fill your brush" ... to find that it's exactly what they've done as the video progresses. Same here. Load your brush with color, rinse, tap, add more water, and then paint. I don't fault you guys. Not at all. I know it's a matter of habit. But if you're teaching, include everything. Don't leave out the reloading of water into the brush. Don't leave mixing color in the pan to "eye sight". Some paints are going to be thicker in the pan and some lighter. I've seen tutorials where they pick up color directly from the block or pan and not dilute it to get the right color without explaining. Watercolor is really difficult. it's why I dropped it in preference to acrylic and oil 2 decades ago. Now, that I do travel painting and that's not good for acrylic or oil, I need to learn watercolor. But the instructions are all over the place, with instructors saying to do one thing but doing another by the end of the video. NO WONDER why folks are confused.

Yeah,tbh I would've liked to have seen the palette and what she was doing with the colour when out of sight especially as I'm more a visual learner. Someone can tell me exactly what and why they're doing something but if I cant see it all then the pieces don't fit together in my head,but that's just me. Apart from that though,she did explain everything well,and it was a lovely piece.

A trick I have learnt for values is using red cellophane. You can put a sheet either over the picture you are painting from or your painted picture and see the values quickly. First time I have seen your video liked it so much I will be subscribing. Loved this and will be trying it as going up and down the scale is something I struggle with. I'm either 2 dark or 2 light.

Ah, yeah, ok, LOL I see what my problem is. I figured I will get my feet wet with some watercolors and got me this basic children's watercolor set for like three bucks. It has 12 colors. Great. Well, I can put colors on a paper but that's about it. So I'm reading your material list... Michael Harding watercolor set... tube of 6... (fyi never heard of it before) NINETY DOLLARS!!! I lost consciousness at this point for a few minutes. So I'm guessing the problem is not my technique but maybe it's more like the $87 difference between the kiddie paint and the Michael Harding paint...? And I didn't even touch on the brush...

The only thing I will admit that sometimes annoys me is that in using all these incredible products, you sometimes forget that others are painting along with you and don’t have all the resources you do. It would be so helpful to simply add a line about what color you might use if don’t have this very rare, special pigment in your beginners palette. But overall, great experience!

I love this! You are such an excellent instructor!! ❤ I've been learning from you since 2021; I'm definitely past the beginner stage, but this love doing practice like this with you!! I do love watercolor and paint daily; but what is the next step in learning? I feel like I want to paint a pretty floral piece, but I get hung-up on the design and composition. I can come up with limited color palettes and have good watercolor control and can paint florals quit well. But now matter how much I research composition. I feel stuck almost like I'm at the beginning again. It's like a gap in learning I can't figure out. I'm very visual and learn by seeing and watching someone do the thing. Do have any suggestions or can you do more videos on composition and design. I know you have do a few in the past and you target beginners, but I love your teaching style so I would love it from you!

I am a photorealistic animal portraiture artist with pencils. However recently I have expanded my journey into watercolor because I've wanted to do them for so many years. Sadly I only have a very tiny selection of professional colors. My finances just are not there because I'm disabled. I am so wanting a lapis lazuli and I'm wondering if the Michael Harding is worth the cost versus other lapis lazulis? It's something I would have to save up for but it is a color that I think would greatly benefit me for backgrounds in my animal portraits.
