I had heard various pieces by Chabrier on the radio and always enjoyed them for their sheer exuberance. Music that always puts a smile on my face. I own a copy of this CD and the whole thing is a delight. I remember reading that Chabrier's music was greatly admired by Debussy and Ravel and I am not surprised.

I'd never heard of this composer until he was played yesterday on the local station KBAQ, it is very peaceful music indeed.

Chabrier's music was probably truer in spirit to the paintings of the French Impressionists than either Debussy or Ravel were. Labels and categorisations can be misleading anyway but there is still a tendency to refer to the latter two as "impressionists". If anything, they were probably closer to "symbolism" or even "pointillism". Whatever the case, these "pictures" are beautifully crafted miniatures, full of the verve we come to associate with the composer!

Both Ravel and Debussy rejected the "impressionist" stamp. If I remember correctly, they preferred "neo-classical".
