I always played to break everything in front of me with sticks held backwards (I blame it on seeing the Flaming Lips in '93 that dude was the hardest hitting drummer I ever saw)- you are the first teacher to make learning proper grips and touch (and therefore true power) fun but still disciplined and precise. And as much as I still have the instinctive urge to bring the stick back over my head with traditional grip- I will now focus on keeping my shoulder locked😊😊😊

Hi, if you look at a number of the great jazz players from the bygone days, there was, naturally, slight differences in how the middle finger in particular was used. Some of those giants had a very loose grip. Always interesting to compare. How about you giving us a little GK.. Drum boogie perhaps? Traditional grip of course. Thank you 🥁👌

Bonjour Emmanuelle . Thanks a LOT for clearing something up here .. I,m new into those drummingfantastic great never ending world .. In my eyes your the "Champagne" in those magic world ! those Traditional grip i,m working around every day and things be better piece by piece and have seen incredible many rudiments around those grip ... You handle also these to perfection .. There is just thing you dont speak about -the angle at your wrist !! one great guy i following says NEWER get an angle at 90 degrees more around 45 and because, then you have lot more opportunities around your indexfinger as i understand it It,s looks like you dont have 90 degrees angle to ,but difficult to see .. Would be thankfull ,if you will say something about those angle And in the end : ) are you never travelling to Denmark for show us others Your skills and Your lovely personallity ? That woulld be a honour -You are My Hero and doing many of your Paradiddles -for be true - i,m additced now around paradiddles and my pad is lot more in use , than my drumset Lol -but funny and hard, at the same time to deal with . Thanks for your time IF -it is actually because of you i have spend many many money of drums and cymbals in a age of 52 years ONLY You have inspered me if some have and Anika niles to Best greetings Michael : )

Emmanuelle, Thank You. I have been trying to switch over to traditional grip for months now, and your little 4 minute video helped me mucho. Of course I'm having trouble with my index finger because it automatically wants to turn my left hand inwards toward the part of the snare where my belly would be of course. I imagine that is normal. How long will it take for me to begin getting some coordination and power if I practice an hour a day just on that part that you taught on this video? I've been playing Rock-N-Roll since 1976 with a matched grip and my left hand has never been equal to my right hand. If it was, I would be a very good drummer today. The reason that I'm switching over to traditional grip is because every jazz drummer from Buddy Rich " MY FAVORITE" down to even the rock drummers that switched to the traditional grip have become better drummers by 100%. There are no teachers in Florida because Florida is the Cesspool of the Universe. If I lived back in NYC I wouldn't have one problem finding a great jazz teacher like Henry Adler or Ted Mackenzie. Thatnk you for your help.

It takes some time to get used to playing traditional grip because both hands make a different movement. Spent some time on just the thumb, index and wrist movement then on playing both hands at the same time and then going over different rudiments and accent and ghost notes. This will help you gain alot of control.

Great lesdon as usual Emmanuelle. One thing I didn’t notice. When using index (trigger finger) for faster singles, do you adjust your hand so the stick doesn’t bounce sideways? That is, turn your hand slightly over or is the tip of stick moved out from center of head? 👏

But as to the tip my wrists or arms don't bounce outward nearly half as much is that cos you may be extra flexible or cos my arms are stiff. I did the 8 of each but when I do the index finger thing I can't turn my hands out beyond my body at all as it seems you do in the video

what is the traditional grip good for (except marching drums)?
@FanPhys
@FanPhys 2 жыл бұрын
Traditional grip isn't good for anything really. It's a technique that was applicable for "side" drums, but now that marching drums are mounted directly in front of the player, traditional grip is pointless. After listening to many of the great drummers advise against learning it, I've decided to drop it for good. There will ALWAYS be players who argue that trad is better for some things than matched, but look at guys like Bill Stewart, Thomas Lang, Matt Garstka... it's hard to argue that matched falls short in any way.
