"Insult" isn't even a strong enough word. I think that "personal attack" would be closer, except for how overused that phrase has become. The Doctor is shaken to his core by the accusation, and even deeper by its merit.

The Daleks were actually the first monsters of Doctor Who, the first story "An Unearthly Child" pitted the Doctor and his companions against Cavemen, the only sci-fi elements being the protagonists and the TARDIS, it was then the second story that introduced the Daleks, and history was made.

If the current showrunner wants to use a character or villain from the past, they have to ask the character's creator. It's also why there have been a couple of non canon spin offs like K9 Adventures in 2010, K9's creator pitched the show to an Austrailian broadcasting company. It's also the main reason why the Rani has never returned. The creators are both dead and they had no children, so no one actually knows who owns the rights to the Rani now.

Yep, I’m a 40 year old American. First watched Doctor Who when I was back at University to finish my degree. I was 29. I’m caught up on nuWHO. While I was catching up I studied for a semester outside London, so it was much easier to get a hold of. I went to the DW experience in Cardiff too. But anyway, the only Americans I knew of that watched Doctor Who prior to it hitting Netflix in America had watched it on public tv as a kid/younger adult. So they were easily my age or older. I know that there were people that tracked down the DVDs, but that was a niche audience. You can tell the writers wrote this episode for the majority of the audience that would not necessarily recognize a Dalek at all, or they’d have heard of them in passing. It invites you to reconsider exactly why they’re so scary and their impact. It’s only the classic Who fans that picked up on that Cyberman mask and that voice instantly.

Yep. The classic show was cancelled the year I was born and aside from a few Pertwee and Tom Baker episodes (none of which contained daleks or cybermen) I hadn't seen much of the show however, I just knew what daleks and cybermen were throughout my childhood. I knew what the TARDIS looked like and that it was a spaceship, I knew there was a robot dog called k-9. It's iingrained in British culture. Then obviously I started watching it properly in 2005 and I'm still here nearly 20 years later! It's really interesting to see somebody react to this show with no context.

Dalek episodes tend to really get the Doctor going and force him to confront his values and who they are as a person. Usually this comes via phenomenal dialogue exchanges. Here it’s “You would make a good Dalek” after the Doctor raged at the Dalek only to hear that and be shaken. In the classic story “Genesis of the Daleks”, the 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) has the chance to destroy the Daleks before they ever rose to power, leading to the iconic “Do I Have The Right?” Speech

A few things here: 1. Doctor Who predates most scifi that's popular today, having started in 1963. The original theme was composed before the invention of synthesizers. 2. Daleks were originally presented as a one-off villain in the show's early days, but were so popular they became a reoccurring menace. 3. Getting shot by a Dalek beam has been described as being struck by a combination of a bolt of lightning and a wave of radiation. 4. That "cute" head in the display case was a Cyberman, another Early Who villain that was repeatedly brought back. They are humanoid remains preserved in essentially space suits, with their emotions removed to dull the pain of conversion. Their end goal is to process and convert all organic life into cybermen.

They only exist to hate and eradicate everything, and if anything changes about a daleks personality, it’s no longer a dalek and will be treated as an enemy if it doesn’t kill itself first. The Daleks were the first alien foe the Doctor ever fought, way back in the 2nd ever Doctor Who story from 1963. Kids and adults went nuts for them and their appearance in that story took the show’s ratings to over 10 million viewers! From this, Dalekmania took hold of the UK and merchandise flooded the shops with remote control Dalek toys, kids wallpaper, cosplay Daleks outfits - you name it, it was manufactured. The Daleks success also spawned two colour movies, starring Hammer horror actor Peter Cushing as a human version called Doctor Who (sic) and both films were cut down versions of the first two Dalek TV stories. The first film was a tremendous success but the second one less so, and because of that, a planned 3rd film was shelved. The Daleks featured in only 15 stories (one of which was a 1 part 25 minute story that didn’t even feature the Doctor or his companions at all!) That’s not a lot when you consider that in Classic Who there were 158 transmitted stories from 1963-1989 before the show was cancelled. The creator of the Daleks was Terry Nation, a British comedy writer who was down on his luck getting work when the Doctor Who production office contacted him, asking if he had any ideas for their sci-fi show. Thrown a career lifeline, Nation came up with the Daleks, who he based on the Nazi’s from World War 2. The Daleks were ruthless killers who had no emotions except fear and hate of others being different to them. They only wanted power, and they would stop at nothing to achieve victory! The squid like creature inside the Dalek was originally human from an alien planet, and a leading scientist there realised that their world of polluted radiation would eventually change the DNA of the people, turning them eventually into the mutant creature you saw. The scientist, realising that this would be the people’s ultimate form, took living cells from them, treated them with chemicals and simply sped up the process of turning them into these mutants. Once he knew that this was to be their final form, he devised a travel machine for the mutants to inhabit and move about in. Thus the Daleks were formed!

And yeah, neither of these things are cute, trust me. The Daleks are all about racial purity and hate. They're pretty clearly based on the Nazi's. The Daleks are the Doctor's greatest enemy. They first appeared in the second story of the classic series of Dr Who when the first Doctor lands on their home planet which had been wrecked in a giant war. That and later episodes in the classic series explain how mutations caused by that war plus interventions from their scientists led to the creation of the creature you saw when the Dalek "travel machine" opened. The Daleks are the ultimate Xenophobes wanting to wipe out anything non-Dalek across the universe and any Daleks they don't consider pure enough. (They are pretty much space Nazis but even more into racial purity). Although specialist Daleks sometimes have other attachments they are usually equipped with the plunger and a disintegration weapon. Whenever they fire that weapon they tend to shout out "Exterminate" as a sort of battle cry. The robot looking head is the head of a Cyberman another baddie from the classic Doctor Who series - generally considered the Doctor's second worst enemy after the Daleks. The Cybermen are part machine and part organic and are kind of like Star Trek the Next Generation's Borg in that they want to convert other species into more Cybermen. There have been a few different designs for Cybermen during the classic series but this is one of the most recognisable Cyberman head designs,

For someone who first saw the Daleks in 1963, it's funny to see someone who knows nothing about them.

most Americans don't know about Doctor Who so it would make sense for them not to know anything about the Daleks or the shows history in general.

Your reaction to the Dalek's true form... maybe I shouldn't mention that they're mutant abominations who used to look just like us...

The cute robot head is a cyberman. they are a classic villain. They are basically forced cyborgs

No spoilers - but if you think this was a tragic episode, it's going to be interesting to see some of your reactions to some of the fan favourite episodes.

I would really recommend going back and watching at least a couple classic Who stories. They're really fun and add some context to these things. Like, the Doctor explains here that the Daleks were the race the Time Lords fought in the Time war, but also he had fought them at least 15 different times before. As well as lots of other monsters that make appearences too.

I’d recommend the exact opposite. I love that Emme is experiencing Doctor Who for the first time, and literally everything is new to her. It’s great seeing her reactions and interpretations of things, which make Classic Who fans alternately shudder, or cringe. Once Emme is done with NuWho, I would beg her to go back and watch some Classic Who, but not until then. Cheers,

@@Wolf359inc I'm not saying go back any watch all of it or anything. It's 23 seasons. I did when I first watched it. My teacher showed us The Library two parter and the fugative doctor, then I went and watched it all chonologically. But I'm a complessionist and people don't typically want to do that. However while still this early, I think it'd be good to go back and watch some of the most important stories. The first ever encounter with the Daleks and some of their other stories, a couple of the cypermen, martians maybe. Just some that will be relevant in New Who. The main reason I watched Classic first was because I wanted to catch easter eggs and references to classic in new who. But regrettably there is really very little in the grand sceme of it. But those important ones here and there do make it much more enjoyable in my opinion. To me it's much more fun to see something and go, "oh yeah! I remember that from back then", rather than "oh, so thats what that was." But she can do whatever.

that sentence gets a little ironic after she claimed that someone admitted the existence of aliens last year, but no one payed attention because so much else was going on... she said something similarly weird a few episodes ago... i wonder where she got that nonsense from.. i am sure internet in general or social media in particular had nothing to do with it.........

The doctor in this episode does come off very unhinged at moments but a single Dalek is more than enough to justify that reaction. He’s also ended the war with a single button press, he knows how many ch1ldren he ki11ed and that was just before season one started.

I absolutely adore this episode as a fantastic subversion of classic Who Dalek tropes, but I've got to admit. The more I see it, and reactions to it the more it becomes evident just how much they dilute the Dalek to a misunderstood robot. As a first introduction to one of the greatest and most terriffying of all Dr Who villains, it really falls flat. In reactions, there's often a lot of 'Why's The Doctor being so mean to the poor little Robo-Goebells'. 'Bless the little Hitler, it's just misurderstood'. The episode is written to give maximum sympathy to the Dalek, and categorizes The Doctor as wrong for being opposed to the Nazi death machine. The best part of the episode is for sure the part midway through the episode between Rose activating it, to when it starts developing feelings, where they do fully sell it as the 'ultimate in ethnic cleansing' that it is.
