It’s surprising that Adam was such a selfish fool. It’s not like they picked him up from the inner circle of an amoral tech magnate with a huge collection of alien tech…

I've not seen this episode in years, for at least over a decade, and it's weird seeing Simon Pegg play a villain, having seen him in later stuff like the Mission Impossible films and other main character protag roles in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End and Paul.

The original classic series was developed to be an educational show. The idea was that the trips to the past would teach the viewers about history, and the trips to the future would teach the viewers about science. So, yeah, like all good science fiction shows, Doctor Who explores and examines real world ideas.

This has been a theme in governance for a long time. George Orwell wrote about it in his book "1984" back in 1948. Depeche Mode released a song about it in 1986 called "New Dress." And, of course, more recently in the 2000s and on, it has become a very real concern for many governments and populations around the world. As aged as this episode is, the topic is still relevant today! Plus it was a fun episode for nerds especially since they kept highlighting how powerful knowledge can be! Much too powerful for Adam, for sure!

One of the best lessons I learned from this show is to choose your companions carefully. The Doctor tends to choose people he admires - which tends to be eclipsed by the audience identifying with and seeing things from the perspective of the companions, making us wish we could go adventures with the Doctor.

Adam was written to be a rather slimy self-centred character and I think Bruno Langley played the role very nicely with just enough undercurrent to suggest all was not well without being too obvious. Unfortunately, it turned out that Langley's own personality was rather too close to that of the character here; his acting career was cut short a couple of years later after pleading guilty to two charges of sexual assault. . .

Getting caught up on your season 1 reactions, this is the episode that had flown under my personal radar despite seeing it when it first aired. Otherwise I would've remembered .... Simon Pegg??? Okay, this was released one year after "Shaun of the Dead", and 6 years before I became a hardcore fan of the Cornetto Trilogy. So for Pegg to be in another sci-fi, *as the villain,* is delightful. Also the threat of the Tardis ending up in the wrong hands, and how easy it could be if the Doctor ever trusted the wrong person, is quite a layered foreshadowing disguised by Adam's sheer expendable stupidity.

Yeah, Simon Pegg was an interesting villain. The black woman actress (Christine Adams) was also in a few episodes of 'Agents of SHIELD', and in 'Black Lightning', she was the hero's ex-wife, and the mother of two daughters with powers of their own. News manipulation... well, I don't watch TV news anymore.
