It's gonna take you forever to get through the Marvel movies if you just do one a month. I'd recommend doing once a week or at least bi-weekly. Up to you, but there's a lot of Marvel content and once it starts getting good, you're gonna wanna watch more than 1 per month. These first few movies are just okay setup films but the MCU finds its footing pretty soon and you'll probably get hooked

Loki in this movie is a good way to paint a villain as both malicious, and tragic. Like, you feel bad for Loki in this movie. He just totally missed the mark with how he went around things. His heart was in the place of making his father proud. But his methods are psychotic.

Loki won all of our hearts. And you can go ahead and mock or make fun of what people refer to as "Daddy Issues" all that you want, it's relatable for a lot of folks. Loki grew up in Thor's shadow feeling like he could never impress his father or be good enough for his father. He grew up hearing all the same stories as Thor did so he has a major hate for the Frost Giants. He views them as the enemy. When he found out he was the son of their king, he was disgusted with himself. He killed his own biological father to try to prove himself to the dad who never thought that he was good enough because he thought that in some way he was killing the part of himself that he hated and what he believed to be the thing that always got in the way of his relationship with the man that he called Dad. Say what you want about that kind of thing, it's good writing. Far better than most of the villains in the MCU.

Loki always dances the line between hero and villain. I'd say he is chaotic neutral. He does what he wants. Be it good or evil. Honestly, for a great deal of the movie, I felt like Loki was the good guy and Thor was the villain. That did turn around when he lied and sent a golem to destroy us, but for a while, they were reversed in my eyes.

The Hulk movie has some great aspects, seeing Lou Ferrigno (the live-action, we-just-painted-a-big-guy-green hulk) get a nod. But it felt like the writers really didn't know what to write so they just went with "Hulk roars and destroys stuff". Granted, the MCU wasn't a thought when the movie was made, so one can't expect much tieźin with what comes after, but its still kind of thin on plot and character. Trivia, when Ferrigno played Hulk, he had to get makeup in a refrigerated trailer, then stay there for his cue so he wouldn't sweat off the green paint.

The great thing about Marvel is extremely very few "villains" are just plain evil for evil's sake; most still have a backstory and reasoning that drives them, which makes them sort of relatable, you do find yourself rooting for the villain at times. This is all based on Norse mythology, in the comics the myths are actually real, in a way, Asgardians being space vikings and all. Odin the Allfather was the guy depicted in the battle with the Frost Giants at the beginning, wielding Gungnir, the Spear of Fire. Also, from the myths Loki is Thor's uncle, not his brother, and had Mjolnir made for him by the Dvergr (Dwarves) as payment for a debt, including Jarngreipr, Thor's gauntlets that are needed to catch Mjolnir, and Meginjordr, Thor's Belt of Giant Strength, which is also needed to wield Mjolnir effectively. There was a mistake in the forging process, and Mjolnir was made with a shortened handle, but it made it much more easy to throw. The Bifrost is the rainbow bridge that allows access to the other realms for Asgard, and its watchman is Heimdallr, who can see all that occurs within the realms. It is said during Ragnarok, the End Time, that he will blow the mighty Gjallarhorn for the first time, summoning the honored dead from Valhalla, the Einherjar, to battle. Loki is the god of Mischief, and while not a giant in myth, he did have three children with the giantess Angrboda: Fenrir, the great wolf that no chain could hold; Jormungandr, the World Serpent, so large that the only way to subdue him was to force him to bite his own tail; and Hel, or Hela, half-dead and half-living, set by Odin to rule over the realm of Hel, place of the dishonored dead. Loki isn't necessarily a villain, you just have to understand that in any given situation, Loki is always going to do what's best for Loki. I very highly recommend you read some Norse myths, they are very entertaining, with one even seeing Thor dress up in a wedding dress to trick a jotun into thinking he was Freya so he could get his hammer back that the giant stole lol And yes, six of the days of the week in English are named after Norse gods: Sol's Day (Sunday, Sol being the Norse personification of the Sun), Mani's Day (Monday, named after Sol's brother Mani, representing the Moon), Tyr's Day (Tuesday, named after Tyr, the God of Battle), Woden's day (Wednesday, Woden was the Old English spelling of Odin), Thor's Day (obvious), Freya's Day (or Frigga's Day, since the two may have been the same goddess, for Friday). Saturday was the one day that kept the Roman origin, Saturn's Day, for the Roman god Saturn, god of sowing and of time. Other languages like French and Italian kept the Latin names for the days.

Hey, Emme! Thor was probably the trickiest character to translate but a critical character to make credible as he figures prominently in the MCU's future. The approach to Thor early in the saga is a pseudo-Shakespearean representation as opposed to the more comedic interpretation of the later films. I much prefer serious Thor as he is much more comic book-authentic. I think "Thor" succeeds on every level and it is my favorite Phase 1 film! In the comics, Thor is the actual Norse God of Thunder but, in the MCU, he is a long-lived alien from planet Asgard whose people have been to Midgard (Earth) and thought of as gods. Marvel's Thor was created in 1962 by writer Stan Lee and penciler Jack Kirby and was the lead feature in the anthology title "Journey into Mystery" until getting his own title. Lee needed someone who could hold his own against the Hulk. Since Hulk is the strongest there is, only a god would do. Comic readers were already familiar with the Greco-Roman pantheon which is practically the basis for the Justice League at DC so Lee decided to go Norse. Lee and Kirby were both familiar with Norse mythology and liked the Viking aesthetic so they ran with it. The sword and sorcery element was new to Marvel with Lee's plots and Kirby's drawings sweeping readers into cosmic high adventure balanced by Earthly concerns when Thor assumed his mortal guise of the crippled Dr. Donald Blake whose walking stick would transform into the hammer Mjolnir when struck hard against the ground. It was hotly debated for 76 issues whether Blake was a human who found the magic walking stick that filled him with Thor's spirit or if Thor was pretending to be a man when the matter was finally put to rest in issue 159 which is the basis for this film. To teach his arrogant son humility, Odin cast Thor out of Asgard to live as an infirm human with no memory of godhood but he unknowingly passes his father's test by becoming a compassionate doctor. His memory restored, Thor casts off the Blake identity and becomes Thor again full-time. The plot element of Loki being a Frost-Giant foundling adopted by Odin is from the gorgeous third volume of Thor written by J. Michael Straczynski, illustrated by Olivier Coipel and published in the 2000s. It is widely agreed that the 45 issues written and drawn by Walt Simonson in the '80's is gold standard "Thor" and essential reading since Simonson mined proper Norse mythology to plot his run on the book. All three key creators appear in cameos in the film. There is an element pulled from another version of Thor that plays a role in this movie. Marvel created a secondary universe in 2000 called the Ultimate Universe in order to boost readership by providing access to familiar characters without having to learn 40 years of back story. The MCU draws upon many Ultimate Universe details such as having an African-American rather than an Italian-American Nick Fury. Ultimate Thor is never believed to be a god and is thought of as insane which is how he is first received by everyone in the movie. Kenneth Branagh was an inspired choice of director as he is known for his many Shakespeare productions and passion for the Bard. He infused the proceedings with gravitas that elevated the material and the characters echo of Prince Hal, Falstaff, Iago and Lear. The production design beautifully blends the divine, the medieval and the futuristic with Asgard's golden spires evoking heavenly Valhalla, the world's disc-like shape evoking a flat Earth of the Middle Ages and Heimdall's observatory evoking alien supertech that stabilizes wormholes accurately referred to as Einstein-Rosen bridges. The Bifrost itself isn't a rainbow but a crystal construct that shimmers prismatically. The Worlds Tree Yggdrasil is just a graphical representation of the nine planets accessible through the Asgardian wormhole. Although classified as planets in the film, they remain the Nine Realms of Norse myth which include Asgard, realm of the gods, Vanaheim, a fantasy realm of demi-gods, Midgard, home of humankind, Alfheim, home of the Elves, Svartalfheim, home of the Dark Elves, Jotunheim, home of the Frost-Giants, Nidavellir, home of the Dwarves, Muspelheim, the fiery realm of the demon Surtur and Niflheim, the icy realm of the Dead. The cast is phenomenal! Chris Hemsworth was in contention with his brother Liam for the part and won it. He carries the character easily in both dramatic and comedic situations and it has become his signature role. Tom Hiddleston's casting as Loki was equally important because his role is crucial and his villainy would be layered. Branagh had worked with him before on the "Wallander" TV series and recommended him. Hiddleston owns the part and is a sheer delight; a relatable villain you simultaneously root for and hate! Anthony Hopkins is magnificent as Odin and he radiates majesty. The scene where he strips Thor of his power was completely ad-libbed and left the other actors shaken! Natalie Portman as Jane Foster was changed from a physician in the comics to an astrophysicist in the film but she always exudes intelligence and was credible. She and Hemsworth have great chemistry and their lust is palpable! Fine support is lent by Colm Feore as the sinister Laufey, Rene Russo as the nurturing Frigga, Idris Elba as the wise Heimdall, Stellan Skarsgard as the awestruck Dr. Erik Selvig, Kat Dennings as the snarky Darcy Lewis and Clark Gregg as the unflappable Son of Coul, Agent Phil Coulson. The comic-accurate Warriors Three are on hand as well with Ray Stevenson as burly Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as grim Hogun, Josh Dallas as dashing Fandral and Jaimie Alexander as bold Lady Sif. Jeremy Renner makes his first appearance as Clint Barton aka Hawkeye, Maximiliano Hernandez makes his first movie appearance as Agent Jasper Sitwell and Samuel L. Jackson's Col. Nick Fury pops in with the Tesseract. TRIVIA: 1. Mjolnir, the name of Thor's hammer which Darcy finds unpronounceable, translates as "Grinder" in English. In the comics, it is made from uru metal or the super-dense solidified molten core of a neutron star. As stars collapse upon themselves prior to going supernova, the cores become super-dense which accounts for Mjolnir's great weight. Only Odin's enchantment makes it portable by a pure soul. 2. The New Mexico town is a set that was modernized after its previous use as a Western town in Lawrence Kasdan's "Silverado" in 1985! 3. The events of "Iron Man 2", "The Incredible Hulk" and "Thor" all occur during one week in MCU-time called Fury's Big Week! EASTER EGGS: 1. Odin's pet ravens Huginn (Thought) and Muninn (Memory) alight on his throne during the coronation. The ravens are Odin's eyes and ears in his kingdom. 2. Odin arrives on Jotunheim to rescue Thor and company astride his eight-legged horse Sleipnir! 3. Odin's treasure room contains the Tuning Fork, the Tablet of Life and Time, the Warlock's Eye, the Eternal Flame, the Casket of Ancient Winters and a mock Infinity Gauntlet! 4. The name tag and false ID given to Thor bear the name of his comic book alter-ego Donald Blake! 5. A sign advertising New Mexico tourism says 'Journey into Mystery' which was the title of the comic in which Thor debuted! 6. The 10th-century Norwegian village assaulted by the Frost-Giants in flashback is Tonsberg which is featured in the World War II setting of "The First Avenger". 7. The colleague Selvig refers to who was studying gamma radiation can only be Bruce Banner! CAMEOS: The three seminal writers of Thor appear in cameo! 1. Stan Lee is the pick-up driver who tries to wrench the hammer free with his truck only to lose the flatbed. 2. Walter Simonson is seen in Asgard at the closing celebratory banquet between Sif and Volstagg. 3. J. Michael Straczynski is the first local seen in close-up trying to pull the hammer out of the crater. END-CREDIT SCENE: 1. Nick Fury presents the Tesseract to Dr. Selvig for study at Project Pegasus. If you see the movies chronologically, this is the third time it appears. If you see the movies in release order, this is your first glimpse of this artifact. The next chronological stop in the MCU are the framing scenes of "Captain America: The First Avenger" which take place in 2011.

These days are all Norse gods or Goddesses: Sun-day Moon-day (these aren’t gods, just suns & moons) Tuesday is Tyr’s Day Thursday is ‘Thor’s Day’ Wednesday is ‘Woden’s (Odin’s) Day Friday is Frig’s (Frigga’s) Day. And one Roman God: Saturday is Saturn’s day, though it can also be translated in Norse to ‘Water Washing Day’ or ‘wash day.’

You see Odin is a powerful being on a muliversal scale able to casually clash with beings like Galactus, and such power at times has a recharge period and that's what the Odin sleep is, to recharge all that power however it takes a while, weeks, months even years probably
