Hi, I'm Chris! Welcome to my channel. I react to movies & tv shows hoping to represent what it's really like to experience them for the first time. If you enjoy, you can support me by liking the video, subscribing to the channel, and letting me know your thoughts in the comments.
Best episode yet? I loved the inclusion of the Dalek and the backstory. It’s clear this was an important fixture of classic who and I thought this was a great way to both include the past iteration of the show while continuing to move forward.

"You would make a good Dalek" gives me chills every time I hear it. The Dalek didn't scream that line like it normally would. It said it quietly. It didn't say that to mock The Doctor. He said it because he respected him.

I was going to say this, beyond being the most Iconic enemy in the entire franchise (before someone suggests certain other ones, which ones are visually used most in iconography for Doctor Who) they were the very first monstor in Doctor Who; the enemies of An Unearthly Child (the very first story from classic who) were cavemen, or arguably the Doctor himself, but the Daleks were the second story, cementing them as the first actual monstor in the franchise.

My favorite 9 episode. "You would make a good Dalek" - To the Dalek it is a sign of respect, but to the Doctor it's the ultimate insult and shows him the dark path he's on. Eccleston's face sells how it hits him so well.

This was such a heavy episode, because we really see the trauma that the Time War inflicted upon the Doctor. Throughout the series, he's generally a very compassionate being, but in episodes like this we see him literally become _murderous._ His hatred for the daleks is so deep-rooted because the mere _thought_ of them reminds him of the loss of his people, and all of the horrible things he had to do to try and defeat them.

Spoiler . . . . . . . . . More so, Doctor made the hardest choice in his existence, doomed his own rave to extinction to make Daleks go away forever and save the universe, but then he runs into a sole survivor, which potentially means there are others, which means they can rebuild still and that makes Doctor's ultimate sacrifice basically in vain. That's why, I think, he hates the idea of a surviving Dalek so deeply.

One of my top 5 WHO episodes of all time. The level of darkness here, and it isn't cringey or insincere in the slightest. "I watched it happen. I MADE it happen!" "YOU. WOULD. MAKE. A GOOD. DALEK." I could go on but I'd need to quote half the damn transcript. I adore that a script this good happened so early in the show's history.

I just wish being on the show had been a better experience for him... he was at my local comic con last year and he definately still had some resentment towards the showrunners... but I love Christopher Eccleston... not just as the Doctor... the first thing I ever saw him in was Gone in 60 Seconds as the bad guy... He was so good playing the bad guy... loved him in Thor: The Dark World too. He's a *fantastic* actor.

The shape of the Dalek skirt (built around a child's tricycle to allow the operator to move about smoothly, even though they could hardly see where they were going) and the ridiculous plunger are consequences of the all but nonexistent budget allocated for the very first season of Doctor Who (back in 1963), in the same way that the police phone box was originally borrowed from the props of "Dixon of Dock Green" (a long running police procedural show at the time) and only intended to be used for a few episodes.

Such a good episode! The Daleks are classic villains that have been terrifying fans since 1963. However, their one weakness then was that they couldn't go up stairs (being played by guys in costumes on wheels). So the scene when they come to the stairs and the Dalek is able to EL-E-VATE up them was shocking at the time.

It should be noted that this is not the first time they flew, or even the second (the first one was poorly filmed to the point that few understood what actually happened). I grew up with Classic Who. There is nothing more terrifying than a Dalek when you have been terrorized by them since childhood. I once jumped out of my skin as the result of being in a store when some random person’s ringtone went off and it was a Dalek voice shouting “EXTERMINATE”. For a brief irrational moment I thought everyone in the shop was going to die. They are the stuff of nightmares and yet always guaranteed to get me to want to watch an episode

I didn't catch the title the first time I watched this episode, but as soon as I heard that voice I felt chills run down my spine, that's how great an episode this is. I was a kid and my dad was in the Air Force, and in '75 to '77 we were at a base in England, so that was how I was introduced to Doctor Who. I got to see the fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker, in an episode called Genesis of the Daleks - about how they were created - and it was impressive enough that I still remember a lot of it today. The Daleks and their creator are high on my list of favorite Doctor Who villains.

As a classic WHO fan, this was a great re-introduction to the Dalek(s). It absolutely needed to show you just how dangerous a Dalek can be - 1 single Dalek killed 300 people, and could have kept going without any real resistance. Just imagine a whole army of them. They appeared in 19 out of 158 original Doctor Who storylines - the most recurring "monster" - and it's very fair to say that the Daleks are one of the biggest reasons that Doctor Who made it beyond its first season. (They appeared right back in the first season!) This story also made us older fans question the Doctor, which was good. We absolutely understood how he was behaving, but also could appreciate Rose's new perspective. It's a stand out story in the history of the new era.

@@CasualNerdReactions In the days of my youth - so so long ago - there was a comic strip series based on the Daleks alone called The Dalek Chronicles. Dalekmania was a phenomenon that occurred in the mid-60s and there were two films produced by Milton Subotsky starring Peter Cushing which were based on the two most popular television serials. The original television series' actor, William Hartnell, suffered from arteriosclerosis and had to retire from the role in 1966, the year of the second film. This led to the invention of regeneration of the central character in order to keep the series going. The second incarnation was played quite differently by Patrick Troughton.

THANK YOU!! I'm still so thrilled you're reacting to Dr. Who, it makes me happy to set aside time to watch with you. I'm also happy you were able to sense the depth of history between the two races. Daleks were one of the most famous 'classic' Who villains - despite the fact that for years even fans found it hilarious to be scared of huge pepper-pots that (back in the day) apparently couldn't climb stairs, classic Who fans had a moment of nostalgic terror when *this* Dalek levitated to chase Rose up the stairwell! This was a wonderful introduction for new fans, as evidenced by your reaction - the abhorrence it showed when it had feelings, did an excellent job of explaining the nature of them though new fans haven't yet established the depth of horror the Dr. will have felt when it told him he 'would make a good Dalek'. Thanks again Chris, this made my morning.

Daleks first appeared in the episode "The Dead Planet" in December 1963. This was the first Dr Who story that was set on a planet other than earth. They were the first extraterrestrial villains in the Dr Who universe, and have been re-appearing frequently ever since so they have a 60 year history. They were a fabulous idea and invention, and were the cause of the original TV show taking off in the ratings, and with an obviously enduring appeal. The poor guys who piloted the original daleks, sat on basically a little seat pedalling about on a tricylce inside not much more than a cardboard shell. The eye stalk, the hand/grip and the ray gun were all operated by hand from within.

This is one of the best episodes of New Who, IMO. The Daleks are the oldest of the classic Who villians, appearing in the second ever Doctor Who story back in the 60's (the classic series tended to tell self contained stories, made up of 4-6 25min episodes). The Doctor had numerous recurring villians, but only two "Arch" enemies - the Daleks were one of them.

To us, this is a hatred that has, in this year, gone on for more than 60 years. For The Doctor, centuries. But for the Daleks, his hate of them, and their hate for him, is ALL they've ever known. Glad you loved this episode, Chris. Hopefully, as you progress with each NuWho season, and are introduced to returning classic villains in new episodes (which you will be), it might make you decide to start reacting to the classic Who run (all 26 seasons), after you’ve caught up with NuWho! Or maybe integrate a classic Who episode somewhere in your weekly schedule? If you do, it will at first come as a shock to you as to how bad the effects were at the time (which can be excused with the lack of budget and lack of time the production team were given), though VFX improved each decade, but I would say the majority of Americans who got into Who back in the mid 70’s onwards (when it was shown on PBS), loved it more for the stories than anything else. Classic Who could have anywhere from 1 (only once), 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 or 12 episodes long to complete a story, and whilst some of the longer stories (7 episodes and above) were sometimes padded out because the production team had to fill 40 episodes each season (back in the 60’s) especially as some stories got dropped because they weren’t working out during the scripting stage, and therefore other stories had to be extended to fill those now missing weekly slots. From the start of 1970 onwards, the majority of Who stories were between 4 and 6 episodes long. Even then there were some 4 part stories that could have lost an episode (as could the odd 6 parter), but whatever their length, classic Who allowed the writers more time to develop characters and motivations in 4 x 25 minute episodes (or 6 x 25 minute episodes) than NuWho does now, because everything has to be wrapped up in 50 minutes, when sometimes in NuWho you think that with a bit more transmission time, a 50 minute episode could have been so much better.

As a Classic Whovian, I loved this reboot of the series. I thought Christopher Ecclestons Doctor was brilliant and I was sad to see him go, however it just keeps getting better. The Doctor and the Daleks go way-y-y-y back. A bit of history..... DALEKS as we see them, are travel machines for the genetically altered creature inside. They began on the planet Skaro, where two races were engaged in chemical warefare, and were slowly being poisoned. One race, the Kaleds had a scientist called Davro who chose to escalate the genetic mutations that were being inflicted on the Kaleds, to it's "natural" conclusion and also took away their conscience, making them believe they were the supreme beings in the universe. The 4th Doctor and his companion Sarah-Jane were there at the begining. If you want to see that story you need to watch an old episode from the 70s called Genesis of the Daleks.

Just about every British person from age 4 or 5 up, even if they have never seen a Doctor Who episode, knows about Daleks. They are a part of our cultural heritage and feel like they have always been a part of our existence. The voice, the design, the knowledge that their only purpose is to "exterminate" the human race is so in-grained in our souls that they create an instinctive fear complex that is positively primeval in nature. If you suddenly see a Dalek, without being primed beforehand, most British people's first reaction is feeling their blood run cold and a sense that you must hide quickly before your brain catches up and processes that you must be looking at a harmless prop from a low budget tv sci-fi show!

Be patient, young Padawan..... you will come to learn all you need to know. There's an ongoing story happening with The Doctor. Many villains, many companions, many events take place. The Doctor is now 900 years old.... and while Series 1 is a "new beginning" for the character, the "Classic" series is still canon and a part of The Doctor's personal history.

Let's face it, the Dalek looks kinda silly. But Eccleston's acting sells you on the threat the Dalek represents. The Doctor's anger and fear and pain make you believe that the Dalek can do what he says he can do. And it gives you an idea of how the Time War has affected him. This is the episode where I became a fan of the show and not just a viewer. And it's still one of my top five episodes.

The Classic Era of Doctor Who began Nov 23, 1963. Back then, they showed half-hour episodes that made up a story. It was the first thing Britain saw after the news broke about JFK's assassination. The intent of the show's creator (and head of drama at the BBC) was to have a strictly time-traveling, educational children's show, beginning with the four-part story about cavemen. And he was adamant about not having any bug-eyed monsters. But one of the writers, Terry Nation, had submitted a script about the Daleks. After some convincing by the show's producer, Verity Lambert, who had read the script, Newman approved. The concept was that the Daleks were genocidal racists, and were created by a eugenics program. Basically, "space-nazis." That seven-part story put Doctor Who on the map, and made it a hit show. 12 years later, they introduced the creator of the Daleks, Davros, when the Doctor was sent back in time to stop them from being created in the first place. That grim story, "Genesis of the Daleks," is one of the best of classic Who.

Britain was bombed heavily by the nazi's in wwi & wwii. Doctor Who was a 60's show, only 20+ years after the last war. The original Daleks were dark grey in colour, reminding us of the grey nazi uniforms. Their motive to kill or "ex-ter-min-ate" a reminder of the nazi concentration camps. Then of course the belief in genetic superiority. Davros (who you will meet later) the creator of the Daleks in Doctor Who, is very much likened to a Hitler figure, going off on rants about the superiority of the Daleks. The Doctors true nemesis, the Daleks are as the nazis were to Britain & the World. 🇬🇧

@@CasualNerdReactions when you said Darlek instead of Darleks. It hit me so hard. This story was about the last Darlek. Not a story about marauding space-nazi trying to exterminate all life.

" Some place beginning with 'S' " - Could that be Shit Creek? Incidentally, the portrait on the wall of Van Statten is a rip-off of an original called 'Portrait Of A Man' created in 1928 by the artist Tamara De Lempicka. De Lempicka died in 1980 in Mexico, having directed that her ashes be scattered over the crater of volcanic Mount Popocatepetl.

Daleks and Doctor Who go hand in hand, but I think the argument could be made that this is the best episode in the modern series to feature them. It makes the Dalek an actual threat. When they return (sorry, slight spoilers) they’re never as threatening or interesting.

Technically, but a part of “new who” was to make this a fresh entry point and they made the official designation series 1. Interestingly enough it looks like the plan is to start a new era again making the upcoming 14th series officially designated “season 1”.
