Discover Women Artists at Victoria Art Gallery
Welcome to our new series on women artists. In this film Katharine Wall, Collections Manager, talks about this intriguing portrait of the Polish artist, Anna Bilinska, by fellow female artist, Emmeline Deane. Although it was famous at the time the portrait and artists later fell into obscurity.
Please note our permanent collection in the Upper Gallery is temporarily closed for conservation work until spring.
00:40 the portrait was painted in 1886 when both artists were studying at the Academie Julian in Paris
01:08 the painting was on display in one of the best spots at the Royal Academy Summer Show in London
01:38 the work is unusual as it is a painting of one woman artist by another woman
01:58 women were encouraged to pursue portraiture as they weren't able to paint the male nude at the Academie
02:17 the painting was in bad condition, prior to conservation
02:44 it was probably neglected because it was not painted by a famous male artist
03:20 although Anna Bilinska had fallen into obscurity, curators at the National Museum in Warsaw started to research the artist
04:07 Katharine examines Emmeline Deane's scrapbook in which she cut out and pasted reviews of the work
05:07 we are not sure what happened to the painting after being exhibited in the 1880s
05:21 fellow artist Milly Childers wrote to the National Gallery and Tate to ask them to accept the portrait but was rejected
06:12 the portrait was eventually donated to the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath
