For one thing, in a soap opera characters are not allowed very much growth; they get maybe one big character trait and then just wait around for the next storyline to come about. The soap format could work if more storylines were catered to particular characters' actual personalities instead of just being something the writers think would draw in more viewers. The end result of simply trying to draw people in via spectacle is that nothing has any weight to it, and there is no reason to care about any part of the show. This also just stems out of soaps airing upwards of 5 times a week, which just means that everything is drawn out and once again, the individual parts remain flat. My solutions are the following; 1. limit to one storyline per episode instead of cutting in between the 4 or 5 active ones 2. allow for a more productive schedule to provide the best performance from actors.
