it's utterly consumed him, He can't let it go, thats what happens when you get stuck in a situation where nothing anyone says to you can bring you out of it, nothing anyone says or does, helps in anyway, being stuck in a pit of despair and complete hopelessness, feeling like you're on your own because no one else could possible understand how you are feeling, it gets to the point where peoples words mean nothing, because you can't feel it anymore, you can't feel their love, being stuck in a river of sorrow, the only thing one can do in that situation is run the rapids, and hope that the support network you have during the ride is strong enough to stop you committing suicide until the river of pain ends and you can find your way out. but I suppose, only those who have been in this situation would truly understand, and telling anyone, to "Let it go" like he's just being stupid, or getting upset over nothing, Well it would be more likely for them to say "Ok, I'll let go of my life" and then they commit suicide, so well done for the least comforting words imaginable to someone who's feeling suicidal. just my opinion
