Greg Hutchinson, drums Through history, our *Parisian brothers & sisters have, long, celebrated the artistry of jazz & created a haven for the Black American artists,* who brought their musical tradition to European shores, amid troubling times. *Our beautifully diverse jazz family is birthed from a hard-fought legacy.* *Emmet Cohen, Kyle Poole, & Yasushi Nakamura* (& our dear Russell Hall), represent the *excellence & evolution of the genre…* It’s remarkable to hear the *pioneering music of James P. Johnson,* played with the same *mastery & exuberance as a century ago.* (And jazz family, please make special room for this name: *James Reese Europe.* his 369th Infantry Regiment - *the “Harlem Hellfighters”* - were the very *first* to bring jazz to French soil, in 1918). In 2021, *armed with their music, Emmet & our beloved Harlem trio have been making peace* during these hellish times of the past year & a half. They paid tribute to their late brother & drummer, *Lawrence Leathers,* who made *Paris his home and galvanized the New York & international jazz community.* And in a fitting close to the evening, they shared the club stage with fellow drummer *Gregory Hutchinson* in a blues send-off. *This swinging night at Le Duc des Lombards carries a sweet significance that merits our attention* - the parallels & intersections of history continue to inspire… *et l’héritage du jazz perdure!*
