Nice phrasing on the sax. Takes the mouthpiece out of his mouth from time to time to let the lines breathe. I am also impressed by how well young Emmet stays in an old-timey groove.

This man playing the blues like he feels it for a woman he loved in whatever way he did. Here's to you Houston Person, and the immeasurable Etta Jones.

@@davidianbaker Cool that you were remembering Etta Jones, so great and so little known. Not that Etta James wasn’t great in her own right. And her version of “At Last” certainly is the one most people know. I love the Etta Jones version though.

lol looks and sounds like houston person has no idea what's going on in terms of the changes. haven't listened to any of his own music yet though
@UkuleleAversion3 жыл бұрын
True, honestly. I know we’ll get hate for saying it but his playing over the changes is really repetitive and he harmonically generalised everything with pentatonic licks.
@matthewschwartz64863 жыл бұрын
@@UkuleleAversion Sometimes that's just what the music calls for. Not everything is, for example, shredding bebop licks and reharmonizing. He's keeping it simple and bluesy/pentatonic-y on purpose. Definitely check out his own material, he's one of the masters!
