Mr. Silberstein, the guitarist, delivers an astounding array of musical quotes. The "Without a Song" quote at the beginning of the C part is so clever, it made me laugh out loud. There are several other quotes I recognized but couldn't quite catch, all of them woven seamlessly into a spectacular solo. Wow.

He does have perfect pitch but him singing along with his solo isn't really evidence. I'm not really sure if it's a bassist thing because I'm not a bassist, but a lot of bassists I've seen sing/scat along with their solos, including the guy in my collegiate jazz ensemble (we are terrible) and I know he doesn't have perfect pitch. I think it's kinda just an improv thing in that soloists know what they're going to play as they play it. If my lips weren't busy playing (trumpet) I think I could probably hum along with my improv.

@FrictionFive2 жыл бұрын
The rhythm at 1:02 is, I believe, a form of Partido Alto. I've heard a lot of cats play this same rhythm at this same part of the song (the "D Section" if we call the form ABCD). I don't know what the historical precedent is (i.e., who did it first), but it's not part of the original J. Gilberto nor Jobim recordings of this song. Many times it's hinted at, such as in Eliane Elias' versions, but not played as clearly as it is here.
