Ste's mom Pauline and Brendan's dad Seamus have a lot in common. They both made their son's lives a living hell, they whisper homophobic things to them making them feel horrible about themselves, and then Pauline and Seamus play the victim with their sob story to make people like Cheryl and Doug feel sorry for them acting like they don't know what they did to make their sons hate them!

The look on Ste's face when he shoved Doug to the floor was priceless. I wonder if it brought back memories of when he hurt Amy? I'm sure he never thought he would do anything like that again, especially to Doug. Doug is always trying to do something good for Ste, and he believes he's doing good. What Doug remembers too late is that he should ask Ste, or talk it over with Ste, or make sure Ste is ok with it. They do need to find out more about each other rather than planning a wedding.

Oi! Sorry but you just can't say that about Brendan. Part of his whole problem is that he does not "whine" He keeps it all inside, tries to protect the few people he loves from the truth, that's why his pain manifests itself the way it does.

His father didn't put him in a circle of violence. No doubt the abuse Brendan suffered as a child contributed towards the man he has become, but I am tired of people pushing the blame for Brendan's actions onto others. It was Brendan who allowed himself to physically abuse his lovers.

I don't condone it either, but Doug should not have made that comment. Ste was so angry about Pauline and everything she said to him that he was going to lash out. He needed kindness and love, not another jab at him. And I get why after everything Pauline still gets to Ste, but Ste needs to learn to control himself and not result to violence.

I feel so bad for Doug :( On paper, he makes the perfect boyfriend for Ste. He is reliable, genuine, caring, empathetic, romantic... what most people want in a man. However, for whatever reason he just does not measure up to Brendan. And that's never going to change. The spark just isn't there for Ste and Doug.
@alwaysuseless12 жыл бұрын
Parents like Brendan's and Ste's are outside of Doug's experience. What Doug did in inviting Pauline was stupid, naive, well-intended, and disrespectful of Ste. He thought he was doing something for Ste, when, as we can see, he ended up doing something to Ste. Even at the end Doug still has no idea.

Not saying what Ste did was acceptable but It must've stung Ste pretty bad when Doug corrected him. Here is his mother telling him he will never change and being an all round vile person then Doug the person who is supposed to support him goes and further belittles him by emphasising his flaws. I'm not a violent person but with all that pressure....I'd snap too.

Here is why this angle! People are more inclined to open up to a priest than a therapist! Legally anything you say to a priest can't be repeated under any circumstances, not even in court! Bren has a lot of demons he needs to face clearly he has a problem repeating a lot of things to the therapist with Ches present, so going to church alone, and airing those things to a priest is good for his soul! And in turn good for him as well. Bren is really not a BAD person! just a victim of circumstance!

The dad wasnt really around very much and then Ste stepped in and said it was his so people believed that for awhile. The Ste and Amy abuse story did not really kick off until Kieron was around. He was the priest that John Paul had a thing with. He kept trying to help Amy and Ste but Ste did not like him much. He had bad memories of when the church would convince his mom to go back to his stepdad because of the sanctity of marriage despite the abuse.

"Jesus died on the cross so that we can all be saved"..."even the devil?" that line really struck. can you imagine how this man sees himself? I believe people can change you have the ones that don't want to (like pauline) n ones just don't know how like Brendan. I always believe the same as Brendan, after things happen in your life and choices you made, you don't know any other way to live your life than how you know. I realize any person can be forgiven if they want it for the right reasons.

Do we know that? What makes us as viewers more knowledgeable than any victim of abuse out there? You're determination to sweep the real issue here under the rug is astounding. This is why I cannot fathom Stendan shippers. They say they don't condone abuse, yet they're determined to not address it or explain it away as a key part of their relationship. jfc people die because of domestic violence every year and here are thousands of people prepared to see someone return to the abuser.

I honestly don't care who gets together with whom; that is for the writers to determine. I like both pairings for what they bring to the screen. I also like reading the commentary (so far) before it resorts to a lot of name calling. Soap operas are the only place you can safely discuss these subjects. In real life, the emotions and the real pain, make it much more difficult as well as potentially dangerous.

Actually I meant a moral turning point where Ste realises he's actually helping and defending the man who beat him up on multiple occasions. Somehow I doubt the show plans to include this and it will be disregarded as fair. Also, people have been supporting this storyline and praising it as a romance for years, while Brendan only started counselling a few episodes ago.

I get why Ste is acting this way, Pauline reminds him of everything he once was and all the pain and suffering she caused him. She is at the heart of him, all that anger he still feels about her, that he thought he had moved on from and left behind. She got right in his face and wouldn't let up with her torment. I don't condone what Ste did by shoving Doug, but I can see why being around his mother that Ste would revert back to violence.

Gosh, lots of harsh judgments of Ste and Doug here. All the interactions in this episode are so true to the characters. I love that about this show. Doug and Ste really do not understand each other. Amy had no need to worry for her kids' lives. Ste was always a model father to them. She knew he would never lay a hand on them. No, this isn't about a bond. This is about trusting someone intimately, allowing them to touch you and giving them the opportunity to take control of you. Not to mention, we are more likely to forgive and make excuses for someone we love. As best friends, Ste and Amy never had that. They had a strong bond, but were the violence to ever return to the relationship, Amy would have been able to escape far more easily.

First off, dealing drugs to someone who consequently overdoses and dies is not murder. Secondly, I don't remember any women who Doug dealt drugs to overdosing? Why are you so obsessed with how long I've been watching? Seriously. If you must know, I started watching in early 2008, so I think I have a firm grasp of Ste's character. And he was in control. But people seem to be trying to persuade me on the one hand that Ste can never fully change and on the other hand that Brendan is fully capable of reforming his violent ways? Pick a side already.
@WalkingTravisty12 жыл бұрын
That doesn't mean the violence ceased to ever exist. How does a victim of DV know that it will never happen in the future? Are they supposed to just take the abuser's word for it when they say that they have changed? Ste's already done that and he ended up getting hurt. Ste has no solid reasoning to believe that he won't be hurt by Brendan again and yet he's softened to him and is defending him and why? All Brendan has ever done is hurt him, lie to him, control him, make him hate himself, etc.

Ste was never as bad as Brendan. He was an abuser, but he never sank as low as Brendan has. Until Brendan actually makes an effort to change, he doesn't deserve love. And I'm sorry but you will never convince me that it is okay for someone to go back to someone who beat them because they "need each other" and "can help each other". The only way he has helped Ste was teaching him some self respect a few months ago, all of which has been lost now of course...

There is nothing bad about Doug. He tries to be a good guy, but him and Ste just aren't right for each other. Ste is not over Brendan and that's all there is to it. He's in a relationship that he really doesn't want to be in...no fault of Doug's, but he's taking it out on Doug. Ste can't see himself going back to Brendan after everything even though he wants to but he still can't know if Brendan can change. Brendan still gets violent with everybody when he's upset.
@WalkingTravisty12 жыл бұрын
Well, considering Ste's with him and not Brendan I wouldn't exactly say he's second choice... He hasn't really been staying out of their lives. First he bought the deli, then their apartment, then he called Ste to take him home from hospital, he frequents the deli, got Ste to buy a gun for him, etc. Though I agree Ste is hardly resisting. Also, Joel invited Doug, not Brendan. And believe me when I say nothing would make me more pleased than for Doug to leave Ste.

Sometimes a hash word is much more hurtful than a punch, or a push! Emotional abuse is worst than physical abuse. At least with the physical abuse you can fight back, not the case with the emotional! What Doug said to Ste was hurtful, and spiteful, and said with malice! When u love someone, respect there space He saw Ste was upset, and he should have respected the space that Ste needed & given it to him. But not whinny, needy as Doug! when he want attention he must get it or else, so he got it!
