@@Progress234 I mean Juliette has been isolated her whole life and like the way she reacts to that new environment (the Reestablishment and the rebellion etc) is quite normal tbh. You can't really expect her to adapt to it so quickly😭. I mean she's not much of help considering how she can't control her powers and is mentally unstable (which is understandable, and is also probably the reason why she can't adapt quickly). I will admit, she can be frustrating at times. People are free to dislike her but some people are way too harsh on her. Although, I only read the the first three books so idk what happens in the other three.

In defense of the writing style of the earlier books - the dramatic prose is exactly how a teenage girl would write/journal about her life. I don't think it's bad, I think it makes sense for Juliette's character. She is the pinnacle of teenager cast-out-from-society angst. When I read the series I actually took more issue with the later books - Juliette is going back and forth between having agency and seeming like she's actually learning how to defend herself to being a damsel in distress and captured (TWICE!). The whiplash honestly made the ending pretty anticlimactic for me - she struggles but doesn't. So much happens but then it's over immediately.

I have been seeing a huge interest in this series on book twitter and it's all thirsting over Warner. I am a survivor of the dystopian book obsession of the early 2010s a la Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, Delirium, Matched, etc. etc., and I could not, as a lady in my mid-20s, go back and read a book I was meant to eat up as a 16 year old just for the experience. I read through until Defy Me just absolutely broke me. I didn’t realize there was only one book after that but I couldn’t gather the strength to read it even if I wanted to. I remember just feeling so lost in that second trilogy. Overall, one of the most frustrating things about this entire series is Mafi’s tendency to show you something and then be like “SIKE! That didn’t actually happen!” in order to retcon and tailor as she pleases and it just feels cheap/lazy. That being said, Kenji and Warner are possibly the best characters in that they usually make the story bearable/more interesting when they’re around. It doesn’t save it tho. Thing is, from what I’ve seen of her, Tahereh Mafi seems like a lovely person with a great sense of fashion and a beautiful family but I also never want to read another book by her 😂

Thank you so much for this. I read Shatter Me years and years ago and then gave up sometime into Unravel Me (I think I crossed the halfway line? don't remember). Now I will never have to pick this up ever again. I get how the OG trilogy has a so-bad-it's-funny vibe. That paired with some nostalgia is comfort entertainment. But the lack of worldbuilding threw me off so hard already, now knowing everything is even worse... wow. I could even forgive rushed battles and resolutions, those could just be necessary stepping stones while the characters, their development and relationships are the true meat, but it was hard caring for anybody. I was so here for the hook of "girl with death touch was locked up and now some more people with fantastic powers band together to overthrow evil overlords". Way to derail this on every level. Was fun listening to you (the cat noises were very welcome).

A few years ago I picked up Shatter Me in my school library, and read the first few pages. As soon as the male live interest came into the story (in chapter 1 or 2) the lead was immediately like oh he’s hot/he’s gorgeous immediately. It might just be me not really liking romances but still that’s way to fast for the lead to suddenly go for the love interest. Put it down after finishing chapter 1 or 2

Honestly, from the sounds of it, the initial trilogy should've just been either an urban fantasy, or a standard sci-fi without the dystopia element. Unlike with the Hunger Games or even Divergent, where the main characters' struggles are intrinsically linked with the dystopia (trying to protect sister from death game or being a divergent in a world that rigidly categorizes everyone) Juliette's struggle of her touch being harmful is just...that, it's linked in the sense that the reestablishment wants to use her, but everything else...her being in solitary confinement, or mistreated or having trauma for that ability could've been easily done in a different setting or a different story that isn't as large scale as overthrowing the government that controls the world.

I never read anything by Tahere Mafi, but now it feels I did. We appreciate your sacrifice Emma. It's so hilarious that I didn't even notice how long it is. You brightened my day, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. 😂

Oh. My. God. I haven’t laughed out loud so many times during a KZbin video in so long. Your commentary is so sharp. I just read Shatter Me during a bad day when I needed to turn my brain off and thanks to you I’ve experienced the best parts of the rest of the series without actually having to read it. That’s the greatest gift ever. THANK YOU 👁️

The fact that I never read these when I was a teenager, but then last year I got into bookstagram (like a lot😂) and read all of them in a couple of months, being 29 and just reliving the ✨angst✨ it was wonderful.

I would 100% love videos like this, I love the really long formats bc I listen to your vids while I clean lol also bc I think it gives you time to really unpack what you're reading w us, and it's super interesting. But also would love you doing essay vids, esp on poems like the Robert Frost poem! When you started talking abt it in the video I got so interested, and would love if you analyzed poems!

hearing about shatter me for so long makes the actual plot much more confusing... i just thought it was about a girl whose touch killed people. had no clue about the secret sister(?) trapped in water who brainwashed the entire world into believing the earth died 😭

I am going to watch this but not right now because it's 3 am here, but I'm coming into it after reading this series multiple times and loving it (especially Aaron and Kenji) and with the opinion that Tahereh Mafi is a master of character voices (Julieta is super flowery, Aaron is very strict and to the point, and Kenji is just fun hilarity), and I dig her use of weird metaphors that somehow work??? Anyway, I'm going to watch this tomorrow but I am also really scared because I really like these books, so we'll see how that goes lol...
I read the entire Selection series so you don't have to
