I love love love your videos Emmy! My daughter 10 yr old daughter Sasha and I enjoy watching your videos and learning so much ;) Your videos have made our trips to our local asian grocers a lot more fun and we look forward to trying a lot of new treats and exciting flavors. She was so excited to find the banana puffs and shrimp chips and we even found a totally new one, a crab one that was delicious! Keep up the good work Emmy! much love from Tampa Florida!!

Shisa are EVERYWHERE when you go to Okinawa! Most people have them standing guard outside their houses. My cousin and I tried to see how many we could find while we were there. Now I shall try to see if I can find some Shisa ga Ippai candy at any of my local Japanese stores. And the Beni Imo Tarts are really lovely, aren't they? My family gifted me with a package of those the last night I was in Okinawa so I could bring them back to my family. I have never been to Hawaii myself, but I have heard there is a significant Okinawan population there. The climate of Okinawa is very similar to Hawaii, and some of the same plants grow in both places (hibiscus is the one that initially comes to mind). So it doesn't surprise me that some of the foods are similar or that the flavors are similar. It makes me want to visit Hawaii even more. These videos have brought back so many pleasant memories of my childhood and my trip to Okinawa. Thank you for these lovely videos! It was so great watching you learn about Okinawa through their foods. I also really appreciated the sanshin music at the beginning of these videos. I had the pleasure of having sanshin players at my relatives' house two separate times! It was the time I most associate with everyone laughing and dancing and singing together. These were such a delight, and now I'm curious to see more of your other videos! (I apologize for the length of my comments- I'm just so passionate about Okinawan culture, and it's so great to see people learning about it since the culture and language are dying).

I loved reading your comment. I spent a good portion on my childhood in Okinawa so this was also like a piece of my childhood for me and the music with both videos brought a sense of nostalgia for me. I love seeing someone so passionate about the culture of the Ryukyu Islands cause it is becoming so scarce. I tried to learn all that I could while I was there.

I know this is years later, but you are right about Hawaii and Uchinanchu. Many uchinanchu came to Hawaii, due to poverty Okinawa, in the early 1900's and worked the sugar plantations. My great grandfather was amongst those uchinanchu and my great grandmother came over as a picture bride. I have a lot of Uchinanchu cousins still in Hawaii to this day :).

the dry plums that have a jarring flavor, mexico has a similar snack to that where its dusted with salt, the best way i have found to eat those is by cutting a sweet orange in half then sticking one of those dry plums in the center eating it together with the orange is mighty tasty.

Hi Emmy, I subbed not too long ago... starting with your century egg video which I thoroughly enjoyed because it wasn't being featured as some "gross" food product to be eaten on a dare. I'm sitting here on this lovely Sat. morning catching up on the videos I haven't seen yet. This Okinawa vid has been my fave thus far, you really seem to be enjoying the package sent to you by Michael which in turn your audience enjoys as well via your expression. I never thought I'd enjoy watching someone taste test food... but I'm hooked! LoL

I agree. That sounds like such fun! Maybe Emmy would let someone help her make it? It's probably a huge amount of editing, after 9 years, of an average of 2 or 3 videos per week . That feels like maybe around 1,000 videos to sift through & copy bits from. Maybe do it as a 3 million subscriber bonus?

I love rice cakes. They are a staple in my diet because I have to eat gluten free and I haven't been able to find a bread that I really like so I use rice cakes instead. I actually like the plain unsalted ones when I want to top it with egg salad. I like the chocolate chip ones for breakfast with peanut butter

The dried sour plums are a fairly common thing in SE Asia. You should try the powdered version with fruits like green mango, guava...even Granny Smith apples. It adds sweetness which contrasts against the tartness. I also like the sour plum candy. Infinitely more palatable than the actual. I'm adverse to the actual. Traumatized as a child when someone told me how it was made.
