This is a 2013 appearance by Emmylou and Rodney on Austin City Limits. " Red Dirt Girl" was written by Emmylou and the bittersweet "When We Were Beautiful" by Matraca Berg.

She's still beautiful. A self made Master. In the most difficult times of my life. When I was at the bottom or heading straight there. EmmyLou gave me comfort and solace. Every time. How do you thank someone for that?

A "Gram" of life is such a gift...Oh what beauty love has to offer a life...a career as a love letter echoed so many times...a love suffered mortally...so deeply can open the Gates of Heaven...a love that cannot die in an unstilled heart...though weathered in time we shall never part...

Yes...you could give up on this world...but you'd miss the chances to hear Emmylou...thanks Gram..."In South Carolina there are many tall pines..." but you saw through all the trees to inspire EMMYLOU HARRIS to bring us the beauty of her heart and soul in every song she sang over the years. Gram, she missed you so much...but we all shared the sincerity of her grief in so many tributes and memories recorded...and it was this honesty that became the mainstay in Emmylou's music.

Gram gave her so much; a direction to follow but also a broken heart. Part of being a fan of both is to share in their joy and their heartbreak.

She's "covered" in talent with a wholesome heart...her fans love her...I know I do...having come from a "red dirt" cotton town. And, not far away, Gram Parsons and the Shilohs played and demoed in Greenville, South Carolina. I have grown up listening the Emmylou Harris where "there are many tall pines" in South Carolina.

I yield my tears to you the old man that I am...I grew up in this southern land as you....I know the hateful politics some construe... but as I grow old I grow so bold...and I defy those powers that be that drowned our freedom true...in every town where racists brew...the scented drinks the empowered drew...until their wells go dry...and they fear freedom's cry...and we collectively arise to face the powerful few...

Emmylou Harris had made me learned so much on country music, had always loved folk songs beginning with the Kingston Trio, PPand Mary (Mary whom I miss so much) and pop songs , The Everly Bros. my very favourite while in school, but besides Dolly Parton, I knew little about country music, thanks to utube, managed to learn about Joni Mitchell, a great favourite of mine before discovering Emmylou. Needless to say that I loved Gordon Lightfoot, Ian and Sylvia Tyson; what made me disccover EMMYLOU HARRIS was during the concert given by the Tysons in 1981/86 can't quite remember but what drew my attention was that, there was by the arm of Gordon Lightfoot, Emmylou whom little did I know, was constantly at the arm of Gordon, thought they were lovingly songbirds so I went to my computer to find who was she....to my surprise and knowledge I started to listen to her music, then came the award in Europe in 2015??? from then on more and more of Emmylou came to my orbit which gave me an angle on COUNTRY music besides Jonhny Cash, Dolly (whom I love!) etc... today, through her I have discovered Willie Nelson whom I love, kind and generous gentleman. am now on country music all day, true to its form, simple and romantic. One more thing I need to add, Emmylou is a dog lover and her contribution to The BONAPARTE rescue mission is something I have tried to find out in vain, needed to make some donation privately but cannot get any correct address, would appreciate if anyone could help: NEED TO CONTACT THE BONAPARTE RESCUE DONATION SECTION. Sorry if this message may be long!!!!!

Me and my best friend Lillian And her blue tick hound dog Gideon, Sittin on the front porch cooling in the shade Singin every song the radio played Waitin for the Alabama sun to go down Two red dirt girls in a red dirt town Me and Lillian Just across the line and a little southeast of Meridian. She loved her brother I remember back when He was fixin up a '49 Indian He told her 'Little sister, gonna ride the wind Up around the moon and back again" He never got farther than Vietnam, I was standin there with her when the telegram come For Lillian. Now he's lyin somewhere about a million miles from Meridian. She said there's not much hope for a red dirt girl Somewhere out there is a great big world That's where I'm bound And the stars might fall on Alabama But one of these days I'm gonna swing My hammer down Away from this red dirt town I'm gonna make a joyful sound She grew up tall and she grew up thin Buried that old dog Gideon By a crepe myrtle bush in the back of the yard, Her daddy turned mean and her mama leaned hard Got in trouble with a boy from town Figured that she might as well settle down So she dug right in Across a red dirt line just a little south east from Meridian She tried hard to love him but it never did take It was just another way for the heart to break So she dug right in. But one thing they don't tell you about the blues When you got em You keep on falling cause there ain't no bottom There ain't know end. At least not for Lillian Nobody knows when she started her skid, She was only twenty seven and she had five kids. Coulda' been the whiskey, Coulda been the pills, Coulda been the dream she was trying to kill. But there won't be a mention in the news of the world About the life and the death of a red dirt girl Names Lillian Who never got any farther across the line than Meridian. Now the stars still fall on Alabama Tonight she finally laid That hammer down Without a sound In the red dirt ground

I guess you had to be there She said you had to be She handed me a yellowed photograph And then said, see? This was my greatest love My one and only love And this is me Back when we were beautiful See I don't feel very different She said I know it's strange I guess I've gotten used to These little aches and pains But I still love to dance You know we used to dance But night away Back when we were beautiful Beautiful, yes I hated when they said I'm aging gracefully I fight it every day I guess they never see I don't like this at all What's happening to me? But I really love my grand kids She said they're sweet to hold They would have loved their grandpa Those awful jokes he told You know sometimes for a laugh The two of us would act Like we were old Back when we were beautiful Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful yes But I guess you had to be there
@sustainablelife1st2 жыл бұрын
such a concise story of getting old. it truly sucks. you still feel young inside but you can't do the things you once did. all of your friends and loved ones die and no one remembers you as a child. no one left to share your memories. Aging is a cruel cruel fate for us all (unless you die young, which might not have been so bad in retrospect).
