I've got an old recipe from my mom for Coca-cola Cake. It doesn't taste like Coke. It's a chocoholic's dream. It's chocolaty, rich, and moist. And the icing that goes on top is even more decadent. It's so moist that you can't make it as a layer cake. It has to be baked in a lasagna pan. The recipe for the icing calls for chopped pecans or walnuts, but I don't use them when I make it. I don't make it for myself; it's too much for just one person. I would only make it for parties or other gatherings. The problem is that too many people have nut allergies. So I leave the nuts out. Those who've had it before with the nuts in never complained about my leaving that ingredient out. They just oohed and aahed over the richness of the cake.

The cake mix is 15.25 oz. because once you add the wet ingredients you should have 1lb of cake batter. Baking mixes are probably one of the only products that have remained consistent over the years as far as size goes. All because of baking’s precision of ingredient quantity and ratio.
@lsmmoore12 жыл бұрын
Yep. You can't hide recipes going wrong, nor can you hide changes in ingredient recommendations to account for shrinkage. So they are forced to keep sizes consistent.

Wait are you saying they’ve always been 15.25 oz? Because they used to be 18.25 oz up until a few years ago.
@rocksfire43902 жыл бұрын
@@lovesamc depends on the type of mix, the vanilla one is 15.25, white is 16.25. the only real picture i can find of vanilla a few years ago is at 15.25 also, at least according to the images i'm finding from blogs posting stuff in 2019. i can't seem to find any past then. i'm sure it has to do how exact baking has to be to get the same results. clearly shrinkflation is a real thing, but doesn't look like it with the vanilla/white cake mix version at least...i haven't looked at the others. would be pretty noticeable to adjust cake mix sizes because the amount of liquids would change to super weird measurements.
@lovesamc2 жыл бұрын
@@rocksfire4390 I have seen some that are 16.25 but I think they are mostly 15.25 now, at least for the popular name brand ones. There's a cookbook that called the "cake Dr", and it has hundreds of ways to use boxed cake mixes with other ingredients. I first learned of the 7 Up cake when I was a teenager. If someone doesn't like soda, you can use any carbonated water (club soda). The cake won't rise as much as a regular cake or a canned soda mix cake would but it doesn't ruin the flavor of the cake mix and the cake is still moist. If you love lemon flavor, add 7-UP to a lemon cake mix. WOW! So good!

In Weight Watchers over a decade ago, we were taught to mix cake mix with diet soda instead of egg and oil to reduce calories. I guy used to make and bring them. My favorite was a "black cherry" cake - chocolate cake mix, diet black cherry soda, and topped with "lite" cherry pie filling and fat free whipped topping instead of icing. Soda cakes are fine, but I (and my non-dieting family) prefer the mix + can of pumpkin puree + 1/2 can of water. Makes a cake so moist, frosting dissolves, and it's high in fiber.

I think the separating and filming process kinda prevented your rise from being better. The trick with a pop cake is partially that it's easy and fast, but the downside is that being fast isn't an optional thing so much as you gotta be quick or the carbonation that works in your favor stabilizes and reacts with the mix and it won't rise as well.

I’m inspired. I suspect my kids and grandkids are going to love this. Unfortunately most American soda has high fructose corn syrup, which aggravates gout. I have gout and it shows up in my hips. The damage is cumulative and I don’t want to have my hips replaced if I can help it. I drink cherry juice, which does seem to help but I still avoid shell fish and high fructose corn syrup as much as possible. I buy the Mexican varieties because they use the cane sugar. Then I need to check the ingredients in the cake mix. If necessary I can make my own from scratch. That way I can skip the vanilla which will help showcase the taste of the soda. I can reduce the sugar a bit as well since the soda also contains it. Thanks for the tip. I’ll be experimenting with it.

I know it would be super sweet, but if you made frosting out of the sodas and matched them up, and yes I love Dr Pepper, but its expensive here in Australia, so I like sarsaparilla instead, awesome video Emmy, love the cakes, brilliant idea 👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘Cheers from Melbourne Australia

My mom and I made an orange and peach dump cake. It’s simple. Sliced peaches, dump orange cake on it and if you want some butter slices took til done. Was delicious

Would definitely love to try the Dr. Pepper, root beer, and Mountain Dew! Love all three as drinks so cupcakes would be extra good!!

Could you make a frosting and add just a little soda to it? Oh! And how about a "rum and coke" cupcake! With a lime frosting.

I loved the retro vibes in the video

My mom and I actually do something similar with pancakes! Instead of water, she uses ginger ale, and it makes some of the fluffiest pancakes around!

Yes! I adore the Doc. Tastes good even when room temperature or gone flat. I actually prefer it flat.

I'd try it with the white cake mix to see if the flavor comes out more

I use Coke and chocolate cake mix. So yummy. You can also use diet cola for lower calories.

I don’t watch most of your videos much anymore but I’m still subscribed for that one rare obscure video that I do find interesting enough to click on and this is one of them and I loved every second of it ❤️

I've seen 7up cakes at Stater Brothers Market near me. Never got one, but I might. If I make these I think I might try grape and strawberry soda. Maybe that sangria soda or cactus cooler.

The Walmart in my Mom's Central VA town sells a 7up cake. I bought in once when they had no strawberry shortcake cups, no angel food cake and no pound cake and mom didn't want me to bake a cake at home. I thought it was a bit too sweet but Mom liked. it Imagine using Cheerwine, yum. I bet the Mexican sodas would be good, the tamarind, the apple, the pineapple. Omg, what about the Bubbly flavors? I'll be experimenting this Fall, it's too hot now to bake much.

I usually make these kind of hacks with the rest of jam that I need to use before expiration date. The best cake I made was with an orange marmalade that I needed to use.

I don’t really do caffeine so it’s mostly diet root beer and diet ginger ale for me on the off times I want a soda. But being from Texas I will admit Dr Pepper is such a yummy and complex flavor. I loved it back in the day! And the museum in Waco was fun too!

I make cake mixes with lemonade (like sprite in the U.K.) all the time. Great way to make it vegan and tasty :)

I like pairing a chocolate cake mix with root beer and a lemon cake mix with sprite. Cool whip on top, and fresh berries for lightness.

I'd bet the dr pepper flavor would go well with a chocolate cake mix. cherry and chocolate pair nicely.

I take a can of the same soda for example orange and boil it down into a syrup for the top of my cupcakes or my cakes. Its really good especially if you poke holes for the syrup to soak down into it. I like Pepsi and Orange Sunkist or Grape Sunkist. Yummy ❣️ ❣️

I've done that once with a root beer cake, i came to the comments to see if anyone else had!
