In the future, you can bang pans or two shovels together. That will often cause the swarm to take cover in a low area. The thought is that the bees feel the vibrations and take that as thunder, so they go low to take cover. That allows much easier catching of your swarm so you don't lose your bees.

Can’t wait for the next episode. If a queen is piping it’s usually because another queen is in there. You may have had the second queen swarm with a few bees. You can actually have many small swarms like this if you leave too many queen cells. Or like someone else said this could be a mating flight. But usually that looks like a swarm landing rather than taking off.
@starquilt5 жыл бұрын
Oh no Emmy! That would freak me out if I saw a bunch of bees flying like that.
@nthebushes5 жыл бұрын
You mentioned a piping virgin queen when you were in the hive the day before. Is it possible that this is not a swarm, but instead might be a mating flight?
@donbeissel29655 жыл бұрын
NTheBushes no. The queen does her mating flights alone. She goes to a distant drone congregation area so she doesn’t mate with her drones.

Bees will almost always swarm between 9 and 10 am in the morning. orientation flights are usually between 3 and 5 pm. Seeing where the cluster went when they swarmed is a good thing, that is where you will put a swarm trap next year since that place will have their smell and it is likely next swarm will go there as well. Usually they swarm out and cluster close by. Then they will find a place for their new home about a mile or so away. They don't like to stay close to where their genetics are.

@bharmer225 жыл бұрын
So happy for this video. Do you watch vino farms? You two are my favorite beekeepers!
@jameslocke30695 жыл бұрын
It's all good. Swarming is actually a condition of a healthy hive for the most part. There are more bees than the hive can support, the old queen will starve herself for several days to shrink down enough that her wings can support her. Then she and roughly half the hive will gorge on honey and leave. Then in a day or three the virgin queen will leave on a mating flight. With good luck she'll return and the cycle starts again. The downside is honey production slows down until new larva hatch. Meanwhile the old queen and her followers will find some cranny somewhere and will start building comb. One of the first things they do is start raising new queens to replace the old queen.

I’m not sure what’s making me more squeamish, the sight of millions of bees filling the sky, or the Blair Witch Project style camera work! 🤪🐝 😝It’s all so exciting and terrifying. Thanks for thinking of grabbing the camera Emmy! You sure know how to keep me on the edge of my seat!
@donbeissel29655 жыл бұрын
bgishy it’s thousands, not millions. You need at least 20 healthy, mature colonies to have one million bees.

Yes, I realize that, thank you. I was intentionally exaggerating to be funny. I assumed people would understand that but it’s difficult to hear intent in text sometimes. Bees freak me the heck out but I can’t stop watching Emmy’s videos. 😬

Ya know I’m a city dwelling noob when I’m like, swarm...is that a bad thing, should I be afraid or excited?😂 In my mind I’m seeing a 70’s low budget horror about killer bees swarming😂 I’m really excited about learning about bees and nature stuff...it’s so much more mentally engaging then hearing about the next $300 eye palette you need in order not to be considered passé.💗

Oh no so sorry about your bees. I can't do beekeeping because I'm allergic. I love watching your videos. Where is everyone!?
@donbeissel29655 жыл бұрын
hvtketatanka I just read an article on bee venom allergy. Less than 10% of those who are told they are allergic will ever have a full body anaphylactic reaction. What happens is a person gets a sting, has local swelling, and decides to get tested. Of course they test positive, because their immune system has been exposed to the venom. There are local, regional and systemic reactions. Local is a little swelling st the site. Regional is a limb. Systemic is trouble breathing. Also-hives is not a sign of anaphylaxis. What I am saying is: get more precise testing so you don’t have to live in fear.

Gail Lurie Years ago I lived in a neighborhood that had gentleman who keep bees and I loved it, besides getting a half pint of honey and a nice piece of comb as a Christmas present the bees did work in mine and my other neighbors yards pollinating or plants. I wish I could keep Bees 🐝 because I find them very interesting and love honey but physical health problems at this point in my life precludes that. FYI unless the bees are Africanized swarming bees tent to pretty gentle and are not inclined to sting you unless you did something to provoke them.

Sometimes shit happens. No need to be an asshole. If you're so great at this, let's see your videos then, or are you just the type to bitch about people doing their thing and try to gloat about your own superiority when in reality, you're not anything special and being an ass doesn't help anyone learn and grow, it just makes them more resistant to asking for advice because of pretentious twits like you.
