I call this bravery... not many can handle the hum and dodge of bees. You go girl! I’m so proud of you!!! And no gloves... Brava... My uncle kept bees. He built really cute cottage houses for them during the winter. He was a bee whisperer. His hives were so well cared for. He would plant fields of flowers and clover. Both on opposite end of his farm. And he always use to say, a man with a hive will always be rich in sweet hues of Amber and gold. My mouth salivates just thinking about his riches. 😉

Thank you so much for sharing this! It is absolutely amazing and so interesting. I’m amazed at the sheer number of bees! And the fact that they don’t just fly up after you tip them onto the cloth. I’ve been so excited to see the videos about the swarm and the split and the wait was worth it! So awesome. You were very brave trusting your girls to not leave you after all that effort. Thank you thank you!

I've been doing this style of split for a few years and it's definitely my favorite. Sometimes I'll stick in a frame of brood to better coax them in and convince them to stick around. It's nice not having to bother even looking for the queen. Here around Atlanta, a shady spot like you have would be hive beetle heaven.

Emmy I love your content. Suggestion: Take it from an old man. When your back is bent 90 degrees and your shake something like a frame of bees you put huge stress on your back that cause problems as you age. I know everyone shakes bees off in the industry but if you will use a bee brush or large feather to gently remove your bees from the frame you will eliminate stresses on your back, decrease the chance of damaging your developing queen cells, and the process is just as fast because you are inspecting the comb as you brush.

Allz I duz iz buzz buzz buzz. (if I were a bee, that is lol) I really admire beekeepers; I could never do this in a million years. (allergic and due to childhood traumas, absolutely freaking terrified of the things. I can't tolerate buzzing sounds from anything, insects or not...) I know how important they are, and very concerned with the situation I'm seeing in my area (a famous winegrowing region of Germany). Over the past week, I've seen so many dead bees all over the place, little tiny things. 😔 Tho when we first moved back here a few months ago, a MASSIVE queen bumblebee came in my house, right in front of my face. Scared me half to death. Then went on her merry way.

1. Find queen and cage her. 2. Find 4-6 brood frames, shake them off, and put them in a new empty box on top of hive (make sure to leave at least 4 frames of brood in original hive) 3. Leave queen caged in bottom brood chamber. 4. Reassemble hive and wait a day. 5. Remove top box with all nurse bees on the brood frames. 6. Pull queen cage from bottom brood chamber along with a frame of pollen and a frame of honey and put them in the box with the separated brood. 7. Add however many frames of foundation needed to fill rest of box. 8. Reassemble the hive. 9. Move the split as far away from old hive as possible. 10. Walk away.

you can also tell which hive is queenless and which is Queen right by the sound. When you have the two hives closed up, listen to each one. The quiet one has a queen. The loud one is queenless. If they are Both loud, they are both queenless.

Hi Emma I'm a big fan of the Taranov swarm and its very cool to see you doing this. I hope the requeening of the original hive goes well. Just curious what your thought's are Keep up the good work.

Well, have you been back into those hives to check on the queens? I like the idea but it looks like too much work vs a walk-away split. Cool though.

Wow, so brave to handle those bees without any gloves on during that procedure. I've been keeping bees, on-and-off for almost 10 years and I still feel fearful about getting stung, so I wear a bee jacket with gloves. After watching this I think I shall try to be more brave since it's better to get stung occasionally anyway.

My parents keep bees in our city and I'm pretty sure the neighbors don't even realize. The bees seem to forage fairly far from home. Other than when they are doing something dramatic to the hive (like this) you don't even notice an abnormal amount of bees in their yard.

As you’re shaking the bees off the frames, try banging your forearms or wrists against your knees while holding the frame as you bring it down sharply (don’t “whack” yourself hard, just a moderate bang against your knees...) You’ll drop more of them off the frame with fewer shakes and they won’t be quite so wound up (don’t do it with foundationless frames though...! Potentially very messy...!😉)
