Back in 'the day', there was an award called 'index of performance'. It took into account the performance of the car based on how it performed considering engine size/weight. Porsche always won the award. Back then, as with this incredible Emory build, I have the highest admiration for the Porsche 356. Hat's off to Emory for his family's dedication, vision and commitment to craftsmanship exemplified with this build. I totally agree with what Jay says in this video. This is a car which brings joy to the driving experience.

I never did look twice at a Porsche up untill about 3 or 4 years ago. Then a friend told me to take his 2012 Boxster for a day's 'test drive'. Now I see what the name of Porsche means to the owners. I won't say I'm looking for one to buy,but,...I am educated somewhat, it what the marque implies. Porsche's ARE different and not just a jazzed up Volkswagen, as my previous thoughts had taken me down that wrong road. Drive a Porsche when you get the chance, and you'll see what I did. When I was a young boy in 1956 I worked at the Circle in Miami Springs. My job at the time was folding newspapers for my paper route. I delivered them in my 1952 Oldsmobile. There was a Porsche Dealership on the Circle. I would go over and look at the various cars and wish I could someday buy one. The cars they had were just so beautiful. I've carried their image with me all my through my life. I attended college in the sixties and I had the opportunity to drive a Porsche on the Ocean Highway. That was a wonderful experience.

Have always loved the 356 Porsche. I used to collect the various 356 aftermarket catalogs in the early 60's and dreamt of owning one and using the parts. I've come across a few in my time, but never purchased one. All I could afford were Beetles. Now, the 356s are too expensive and I wouldn't want to drive a $300k Outlaw car on the street. Not even an original 356. I would die if the car were dinged. They are a blast to drive, as well. The 911s were strong in their day when pushed. The 356 cars were just fun and were easier to drive "fast" (it's all relative). Drive fast in anything with the engine in the rear and swing axles, and you can drive just about any car. Jay, you do a remarkable job on this channel. The featured cars are always a treat to see. Many thanks!! Have anything more on Benzes?

Don't ask me why but I really enjoyed this video. Rod Emory was a great guest and his world of information just kept you asking for more. The story of his family was also great to hear about and the fact that the tradition will live on. On the 1958 Special I would just love to be able to drive that car. Jay hit the nail on the head when he talked about the mystic of these cars. Sure there are the 200 mph plus exotics but they have no personality like the Porsches and others in that category. It is the karma that Jay was talking about when shifting through the gears and watching the tach climb. Its like Yoga for gear heads.

@@s52obd1M Well, because hp and torque are the only things that when spoken or read indicate what kind of power an engine is making. So every engine has it. A horse power and torque rating. For peak power and usable or lower rpm strength or power. Pulling power in the mid range.

A ATE brake caliper for a 944.also used on the Peugeot 504,505,604,. and other mainstream vehicles cost as little as $20.00 to rebuild and new/re-manufactured units can be had for under $50.00 bucks............Porsche charges $2,000+ for the same caliper.

Emory's story of showing up to Porsche events in the late 80s and early 90s and being put out in the cold is especially hilarious to me. From around 1988 to 1990, I was the owner of a 356B, recently moved down from SF to LA. I'd been a member of the PCA/Golden Gate Region, and those guys were very hardcore about about driving (almost criminally so), but when I moved south and joined the LA Region of the PCA and got on the Board of Directors, I found the members to be very "different"; as in, mainly interested in "shine and show", but not so much about driving events. I vividly remember our Region's President, Kurt, bemoaning the fact that he'd lost out on getting an award at the most recent PCA Porsche Parade because the judges found he'd polished some suspension bolt that had been originally dull finish from the factory!
