This was a great video. FINALLY someone bridging the gap between the backpacking channels and the hunting channels! I TOTALLY agree about the forgetting to eat, I’m sure we all often find ourselves feeling like we will miss out if we don’t hurry up and get there, only to get nauseously hungry and have to stop. I’m curious: when you switch from backpacking mode to hunting mode, you are certainly adddddding weight. Weapon, game bags, optics… but have you found anything that you would take backpacking…but not necessarily hunting? Or do you think this just plays out as having to sacrifice comfort items (ie. I don’t bring my body bathing wipes when I hunt, just a few wet wipes) in order to keep your weight down with the added gear requirements?

Thanks man, glad you like what I'm doing here! Great question by the way. Honestly, there's not much that I take on a regular backpack trip that I don't take on a backpack hunt aside from the type of pack I use and my footwear. Everything else is the same thing and I just swap out different base layers, mid layers, and outer layers. At first my thought was to answer with "shelter," but I can use any of my tents in either scenario. If I think of something I'll let you know!

This is the 4th or fifth video of yours that I’ve watched and I’m really impressed with the quality advice you give. I’ve done a lot of backpacking but just getting into hunting. You’ve got a great perspective.

Thanks so much! I really appreciate that! I do my best to approach backpacking with common sense and not put it into any specific bucket or box. Each trip is different, each mission is different, and each PERSON doing the backpacking is different. My one and only goal is to share my experiences and meet people where they're at. Thank so much for watching!

That failure to eat and drink is probably the best tip I've ever heard about hunting on your feet.

Good stuff. Also never forget bear mace and have it easily deployable 24/7. Know how to set a bear bag near your camp as well.

Thanks! Good addition to the list if you're in bear country.

New to hunting here, but not backpacking or long treks. How do you haul your harvest with a full pack? Do you download and make multiple trips? I plan on being on public land.
@EmoryByLand3 жыл бұрын
It really depends on what your situation is. Some drop camp to haul only meat and others haul both. Most modern hunting packs have a meat shelf that separates the bag from the frame and keeps meat separate and close to the center of gravity. Just depends on how many trips you want to take and what works best for where you are.

I am new to hunting as well but plan to go in the fall. If you have a buddy you can bring some paracord and a hatchet and learn to lash poles together. Take 2 6 ft poles and some cross beams and you can lash it together and lash the meat to that and carry it out together. We used to run drills like that in Boy Scouts but we were hauling out 'injured' buddies instead of elk. Even solo you can make a sled you can drag and its surprising how much weight you can haul including an injured buddy. Basically something like this but used to carry instead of a ladder: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4vFmpSVpLyHmpI

Not fitting your pack correctly to your body for a heavy pack out... feels good and comfortable with 35-40 lbs... Then you pack out and Elk from 12 miles and you have to stop and try to adjust the pack because it is now 85-90 lbs and you find that you cannot get it to synch down around your waist tight enough... This started with me not wanting to spend the money on a pack so I barrowed an XO 3600 from a buddy that was close to my body type, turns out.. After I got back home from my trip I told him about the chit show I had goin on and he looked into the hip belt size and he ordered the wrong one....PRO TIP #254.... a 50 lb bag of bird seed very closely packs and distributes weight very much like deboned meat in a game bag, so for the backpack hunter that has yet to experience deboned meat and the added weight to their pack I suggest that they train using my protip prior to their hunt to make sure that backpack that they just purchase for $$$$$ fits them correctly under a load.

What's your normal pack weight heading in? What's the max weight you could carry in a hunting pack 10 miles a day if you had 2? What's the heaviest you've carried for 10 plus miles to date and what carrying system did you use? I'm shooting for 100 pounds 10 miles a day 30 days for thru hiking. Will start at 100 pounds end at 60 be carrying 40 pounds of food I won't be hunting. I figured I'd as a hunter because of how heavy Thier packs are compared to thru hikers.

I'm usually about 40 ish pounds I think. I honestly don't weigh my pack anymore so I can't say for sure. I take what I need and call it a day.

What weight total pack weight is light v heavy?
@EmoryByLand2 жыл бұрын
I personally don’t think there is a way to tell what’s light versus heavy because everyone is different and it really depends on what kind of backpacking you’re doing. Base weights can range anywhere from 7 lbs to 20 lbs or maybe even more. That said, I think it’s fair to said a “light” pack is probably around the 10-15lbs base weight range. Add in food and water and you’ll be easily under 30 lbs for a few days of backpacking
