Quilts are perfect for stupid people like me, who also believed that ridiculous looking zero drop shoes of inferior quality were the next big thing. I even believed frameless backpacks and dyneema tents that looked like they were designed by five year olds were a good idea, just like I believed toe socks were not only for masochists - and had blisters within the first 5 mile. I jump from one rabbit hole to another. But somewhere in the back of my mind I think you’re right. Maybe someday I will wake up and say: ‘I don’t buy it anymore.’

You should really try a Katabatic quilt; they mostly fix the problems you described. EE quilts are outdated and over-rated; you have to wrap them around your pad to keep out drafts and this reduces the space gains. Katabatic is not just far better at keeping out drafts, but they are also far better quality. UGQ is also good, but not nearly as good. A benefit I don't think you mentioned is versatility; quilts are far more ventable than sleeping bags; you can use a bag like a quilt, but then the hood is in your face. A great quilt should use your insulated ground pad in place of the fabric that would otherwise be under you and there should be almost no drafts. In this scenario, you have a lighter system that is more versatile and spacious.

I did notice that my feet get sore much faster on rocky trails where there is no good foot placement. Walking on rough rocks is much harder on the feet. Whenever possible, I step on the flatter spots.

I did a solo 5 day trip recently and can say these tips are good tips if you are not comfortable backpacking solo. I didn't have too many issues but one night I was in a more populated area and there were some people around at night and that freaked me out a bit until I realized they were just camping like me but got to camp really late. I do wear earplugs sometimes and that helps me. I guess I'm more worried about humans messing with me than animals, but if I am out in the wilderness there are less humans to worry about.

A "Quilt" is basically a sleeping bag without the zipper and most likely just a reason to charge more for something that's more popular, for whatever reason. I can't justify paying $500 for a quilt OR a sleeping bag. It's outrageous.
@jimkc1608
@jimkc1608 Ай бұрын
People need to be objective about their gear- after a subjective rant about quilts. Argument not convincing. Get some data and present that- temp monitoring, amount of movement. I use both. Down to 20 degrees I use a quilt and below that I use a bag- this is because I only have two quilts rated 40 and 32 degrees but have sleeping bags down to zero rating. I used temp sensors (Govee wifi) one in the footbox and one near the chest using a 32 degree quilt and a 30 degree bag using the same ground pad with each. Temps hit a low of between 28 and 38 degrees over 6 nights. Socks, watch cap, neck gaiter and lightweight thermal underwear top and bottom worn throughout. Temp sensors sampled constantly overnight. When graphing the data- no significant differences between the two- minor fluctuations in high low temps inside the bag and quilt. Quilt avg internal temp- 86 degrees, Bag avg internal temp 88 degrees. Subjective part of the evaluation- I remember waking up a lot more to reposition when using the sleeping bag.

I have a long story, but yeah, I am switching to wool for cold and cotton is what I am wearing in the heat. I found my body is burning alive in polyester. I know this isn't a 1 to 1, but I am from Phoenix AZ. I went to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam and Southern China. I have been here 6 months. In AZ, I thought I was buying athletic clothing, for some reason a lot is 100% polyester. I found that I have been burning up. I couldn't figure it out. A lot of people aren't running AC or run it rarely, and I was way hotter and sweatier than all my friends. One day, I was cooking indoors. I took my polyester off and went and found a friend's cotton shirt. Suddenly I was much cooler. Everyone says polyester moisture wicks, but I don't care if the whole reason I was hot and sweaty was the polyester, especially when indoors. It is why I am starting to research fabrics, because I can't believe Polyester is sold as athletic wear. In AZ, cotton was common and as a kid, I used it in sports and it was great. Then as an adult, I didn't research and was just buying randomly. TLDR, I am going away from polyester or fleece. Cotton in Dry and Hot and Wool otherwise for me in the future.

I walk with my older dog. He goes about 2-3 mph, which is an ideal pace for me to practice endurance. It sounds slow and it is! At that pace, it takes 10 hours to do 20 miles, but like you said, if I’m starting at 6:30, I’m still done at 4:30 (5 or 6 with breaks)!

Bladders are GREAT for full-day hikes, like Half Dome in Yosemite. Most of the issues listed here are false problems, and minor problems easily addressed with proper technique. The only legit pain imo is cleaning them. As usual, the best choice depends on the length of the hike, and access to potable water. Most of the time I don’t need a large bladder and I just bring a bottle or soft flask because the hike is relatively short and not strenuous. And if camping only with no long hikes there’s no need for a bladder either unless from a waist pack.

Get a good Camelback and all of these points are negated. You are over complicating the bladder. I do agree though that quality hydration packs are expensive so bottles are a much cheaper option, not necessarily better though.

Totally get it, and you’re probably right, but you have to think of KZbin like an archive in terms of the person making it and the time in which they made it. Styles and skills evolve over time and there are a lot of different ways to make a video. If I were to make it today , it would look much different. Hopefully you still got some value out of it. If you’ve never made a video or put yourself out there to be criticized, I’d hold off on posting negative comments and instead be encouraging.

I find in my down sleeping bag rolling from my back to my side, I have crushed the insulation by laying on it, making a big cold spot. The solution would be a much heavier synthetic sleeping bag, or a top quilt. Now I use a mummy pad, with my quilt tucked under the pad for ZERO cold spots due to it lifting as I roll. My next buy will be a Zen Bivvy me thinks....
