I have always been told that our stress levels and emotions can interchangeably affect each other, but I had no idea that they could influence our health. Lately I have been pretty stressed out due to finals coming up, but it did not occur to me that they could be causing some of the physical headaches that I have been experiencing as well. With this new understanding I will be keeping a closer eye on my stress levels to do anything that I can to lower them and hopefully making it so that my health is a little better and possibly a little more pleasant to be around which will benefit everybody.

Emotions is what humans live with, no matter what situation and the worst we deal in our lives, is stress, whether from finance, from education or anything we deal in our lives but to combat these situations, mostly stress, we find what benefits ourselves for a good life but however, we'll still live with it but we must remember who we're dealing with and beat it to prevent a loss in life.

"Introverts are betting at reading others' emotions while extroverts are better at expressing them." I don't mean to brag, but I've gotta ask, can you be both an introvert and an extrovert? When it comes to reading emotions AND expressing them, I'm bad at both!

I should note in addition to what these other people have said. this is a tendency not a definate "if you're a then you are good at b". type of thing. also reading and expressing emotions can also be affected by other things.. for example humans during their teenage years have a tendency to be at their worst at reading emotions and expressing their own accurately. which can lead to the stereotypical "no one understands me" thing

Lately I've been suppressing many of my emotions - like sadness, anger, anxiety etc. - thinking that if I felt them, there was something intrinsically wrong with me (I don't know why tbh). But in time, I came to realize that is not the case at all. They are there for a reason: feeling them, appreciating them as you said, and then, if they're too overwhelming, just trying to calm down is the best thing you can do I guess. I like your videos, your explanations are very clear! Thumbs up :D

Extreme emotions can affect physical and emotional health.For example, when in rage muscles flex and tighten, the heart starts to beat and pump blood faster, and the culprit usually ends up doing something that they regret later on. Also migraines and headaches can occur after the raging is over. Stressing the heart like that over a period of time can lead to the risk of heart attacks. There are multiple heart diseases and cardiovascular diseases that can be traced back to the continual heart stresses and rage and can cause critical damage to your overall health. Dealing with this continual rage, strategies could be taking deep breaths, counting to ten, and walking away from the scene. In doing so this could prevent ,on a large scale, divorce, anxiety, and even more stress mentally and physically.

Hi, Love your content and have been watching it for ages. A suggestion (certainly not meant to belittle the amazing work you do at CrashCourse) would be to reference your studies, experimental reports, ect. I was just watching Healthcare Triage (another KZbin channel) and was impressed by the ability to verify information. While this is not necessary in many cases such as crash course history when it is possible it would great. While we can trust you at CrashCourse we cannot trust all information and so getting people used to check facts and reading the evidence for themselves will go a long way to creating a smarter world population.Keep up the great work.AH

While viewing this crash course video I have learned a lot. What I found interesting throughout this video was that Emotions, as well as personality, attitudes, behaviors, and responses to stress, can have an impact on our overall health. I personally feel that stress has to biggest impact on a person’s health. These stressors may include, daily hassles, life changes, and catastrophes. This video brought light to my eyes about how and why becoming stressed can cause many problems throughout life because it is so much that comes with it

I wish my class used these more of these videos as I have learning disabilities and I can "understand" what is being said, unlike our reading material that seems like it for someone in Psych for 3 years should know. My Intro to Psych is "not" an intro class, it is like a 2 or 3rd year class! I do not understand anything that is going on, being said period. Sigh.....

I don't believe that Botox will decrease your chances of depression because you dont have any control over your face movements and you are stuck in a state of smiling. I heard that when someone stresses more about stressing out it causes an increase in heart disease instead of actually experiencing stress. I agree with Carol Izard that love should not be considered a basic emotion because many of us individuals don't understand the full complexity of the meaning love or haven't yet experienced the emotion of love. This episode could be really helpful for an everyday college student and an individual in a stressful job. Life is all about changes and we must learn to adapt or our health and mind will be destroyed.
@somenerdyblonde
@somenerdyblonde 9 жыл бұрын
It's not that Botox decreases the chance of depression, but that it alleviates the experience of depression, according to the study. Those are two very separate things. Carol Izzard said that love was NOT a primary emotion, but a combination of two or more. Love is often experienced as joy and excitement, along with someone of the others.

Ok, I know this one very, very well, in a short term, mid term, and long term way. Short term- after a forcible rape in 1987, I peed enormous amounts for the first 24 hours, which my doctor said was a pretty normal response to that level of trauma. I also couldn't eat for several days. This was a problem, because I was nursing a 7 month old baby at the time. we survived. (And we secured a conviction.) Mid-term- Five years ago, my younger daughter's mother-in-law tried to take custody of her twin daughters. It was nothing short of (excuse my language) a clusterfuck. We fought tooth and nail in court for three months. She won, and had them for 18 months. It was horrible. (We continued fighting, and eventually got them back I had to get my state senator involved, as the state agency was not even following their own rules) After three months of sleeping on their sofa, daily struggle, and crying with my daughter, I had to go home, sleep in my own bed, wear some different clothes, etc. And three day after I got home, I had a heart attack. My cardiologist said it was the clearest case of a stress-induced heart-attack he'd ever seen. And now I'm on long-term cardiac heart meds. Thanks/no thanks, Cyndi. :-P Long-term- I've had a lot of long-term stress- my marriage failed, and I went back to school to try to give my kids and I a better life. So there I was, juggling classes and parenting, and it only got worse when I went into grad school and they went into high school. A relationship I had as an undergrad didn't work. As the stress built, by health went down. me blood pressure went up. I struggled with depression I was eventually diagnosed with bi-polar disorder type 2 (it runs in the family, though usually type 1, so I got off light). The workload got heavier, I got sicker. I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Eventually I had to drop out of grad school.. I worked for awhile, but the fibromyalgia got worse, the heart problems got worse, my asthma got worse and I developed a serious lung condition called sarcoidosis. I ruptured a cervical disc, and now I have neurological issues. So yeah,I'm on disability. And the huge amount of medical stuff is stressful on its own, but I also have financial problems because of all of it. :-( So I'm a walking advertisement- stress is BAD FOR YOU. Don't underestimate it. Do everything you can to reduce it. and if ou can't, make sure you get plenty of support. It can make a difference.
@jasonneu81
@jasonneu81 8 жыл бұрын
+Laura Minnick Fybromyalgia? Don't believe the doctors, I was diagnosed with it because the doctor was an arrogant dipshit who didn't wanna admit he had no clue what I actually had (case&point he once diagnosed me with leukemia to explain away many of the symptoms fybromyalgia wouldn't have explained). It was only years later after having to be in the kid's cancer ward for almost a year that I got to a better doctor who finally gave me the diagnosis, Syringomyelia. I suggest you get more doctor's involved so they can give you a more precise diagnosis as Fybromyalgia is often used as a sort of "crutch diagnosis" when a doctor isn't able to make a precise diagnosis. Anyways it's terrible what happened to you, good luck and have a great day!
@Liutgard
@Liutgard 8 жыл бұрын
+Jason Neu Jason, I've had several doctors concur with the diagnosis. And it wasn't an arrogant dipshit. In fact, my primary care doctor sent me down to orthopedics and sports medicine (I was at university then) And after scratching their heads for a couple of hours they suddenly decided to do the 18 point test, and bingo! 17 points. Later, after I moved, two different doctors did that tests and others, and came to the same conclusion. Thanks/no thanks for the armchair medical assessment.

On basic emotions, I do believe that the list has been reduced since the 1970s to 4 basic plus two reactionary. Anger, Joy, Sadness, Fear are basic, with surprise and disgust as reactionary all found in infants. Guilt, shame, excitement and contempt are not basic emotions but rather complex emotions Guilt/shame for instance is sadness or anger plus disgust at yourself. Excitement, joy and the element of surprise. Contempt is disgust plus anger or fear. The 4 plus 2, method is actually testable on infants, good luck on trying to test shame/guilt and contempt - which can be learned rather than intrinsic.

This video is a fascinating dive into the complexities of emotions and how they affect our health and interactions. It's intriguing to learn that astronauts' puffy faces in space make non-verbal communication challenging, and that Botox can potentially ease depression by freezing frown muscles. The cultural differences in gestures, like the 'come here' gesture in the Philippines, highlight how emotions and expressions vary globally. Understanding these nuances can help us better navigate our own emotions and those of others. Great insights!

A lot of the information crash course is giving on emotions is not in agreement with the scientific data from neuroscientists such as Lisa Feldman Barrett and Anil Seth. Maybe I'm listening to the wrong people, but what they have to say makes a lot more sense to me. Especially the fact that you can't actually tell what someone is feeling by looking at their facial expression. We have been socialized to group certain expressions with certain emotions, but in reality we use context more than facial expression to tell how someone is feeling (ie if they are crying tears or joy or sadness, etc)

I'm glad to see something posted that fits exactly with stuff I already believed (a hypothesis coming correct, anyway), I'm generally a very positive person, haven't really experienced much 'serious' negativity in about 4 or 5 months, and I'm never sad or angry for very long periods of time at all... I _also_ noticed that I hardly ever get sick, and my immune system has been fantastic for a while, I get the whole correlation versus causation, but I see a lot of negative-talkin' people goin' around complaining about how sick they are all the time, and how they have to go to the doctor's to get something or another checked out.

there's a loop hole to all this and that what i have witch is something called Asperger's Syndrome witch means the natural understanding of emotion is not a thing for me as an extreme example for instance as a child i had to memorize what different facial excretions ment in the same way someone might learn a second language of course by now my understanding has increased but is still knowledge not understanding but all the same this was interesting

Dear Hank, Thanks so much for all the information you've shared with us through Crash Course and Vlogbrothers. You cover topics that are really important for the youth of today, but I feel that you're a bit lacking in the humor department. As you know, students learn best when they're having fun, so I think it's worth the extra effort to ensure that your lessons are always comically-charged. Sincerely, A devoted follower and admirer of Crash Course
