According to Jo, if you want to try what Serbian barbecue can REALLY be like, then you have to go to the south, to Niš (tavern "Mrak" or "Nišlijska mehana" or any other old Niš restaurant :) Also, "burek" was created in Niš in 1498, so you won't try a better one anywhere in Serbia. :) And, yes - be very welcome to Serbia.

@@PoJoTheBackPacker I left Serbia for Canada, but I returned and lived in Belgrade in 2021/2022 before coming back to Canada and I loved the food the most and it's what I miss in Toronto. I enjoyed watching you enjoying the food and being so appreciative. The restaurant is called Staro Užice, which translates to Old Užice, which is a smaller town in SW Serbia, probably the owner's hometown. Of course leaving the tip is a nice gesture and you were quite generous too. The owner probably told the server lady not to take the money from you as he wanted to treat you.

@@PoJoTheBackPacker Hello, love you, your kindness and your videos. I wanted to explain what happened at the restaurant so you don’t feel confused. In Serbia, it’s part of the culture to show hospitality in very generous ways. When the owner offered your meal for free, it was a sign of respect and kindness. The waitress not taking your tip wasn’t because you did anything wrong - it’s likely she felt it was her way of contributing to the gesture and didn’t want to seem like she was expecting anything after you’d already been treated so kindly. It’s just a cultural thing - sometimes people here genuinely want to show gratitude or hospitality without any strings attached. You were absolutely fine, and I hope you enjoyed the experience!

Before the wars in this area the whole country was Yugoslavia and was a popular vacation destination because of its obvious beauty, the lovely people and the food. Then I think it was ignored as a holiday fun spot. But Serbia especially has been making a comeback and you are doing a great job highlighting the country!! Hence that magnanimous gesture by the Restaurant Owner. I know a young man who came to America to seek his fortune but went back home to Serbia, he loved it so much! Currently 50.000 Serbs live in Chicago. In 1970's the number was 300.000. In Toronto, Ontario, Canada live 33000 Serbs which is one third of all serbian population in Canada. By statistics more Serbs live outside Serbia than in Serbia, which is a very scary fact because most will never come back and they are still leaving the country because they think they will live better, but the quality of life in general is incomparable. Maybe we have lower salary, but majority own their home, debt free, and university is available to anyone free of tuition if you pass exam, if you don't pass exam well you can still afford to pay your education and be debt free. In USA and Canada that's impossible.
@seannikolic8223Ай бұрын
Currently, there are 250000 legal Serbians in the Chicagoland area, plus many many undocumented ones. Btw just moved back form Chicago back to Serbia after 15 years living in Chicago. The reason of so many Serbians in CHI is mainly ......end of 19th and begging of 20th century Serbians are mainly working in Steel plants like Gary IN one...as they didn't need high skills or knowledge of English language. Most of them came from rural Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and Bosnia and they were not much educated. Second factor is that we Serbians stick together so we can help each other. I'm glad you enjoyed Serbia. Regarding tip....its not all about money ...a simple and sincere "thank you" is (sometimes) "better" than the money.

You didn't get the ordinary pljeskavica. You got the gurmanska pljeskavica which has additional things inside, so it's heavier than the ordinary pljeskavica. On the top of the pljeskavica is urnebes. That soup is a life saver after going out and clubbing. You have it at 5-6 in the morning and go to sleep. As a student it was a life saver. It's cheap and tasty and recovering. Glad you enjoyed it.

I'm from Novi Sad but I think there are no bad neighborhoods in Belgrade. You could literally walk anywhere in any time of the day or night not fearing you'll get jumped, robbed or something. Although avoiding stupid places at stupid times is always smart, for example the most dangerous places in Serbia are fast food kiosks and bakeries in the middle of the night during weekend when everyone is drunk and hungry. Things can go south fast there!
@PoJoTheBackPacker21 күн бұрын
I walked by a huge brawl mid day next to the Belgrade bus station few weeks ago haha i was not scared and i don’t think i would get mugged here or something and i feel perfectly fine here.

PoJo, the largest Serbian diaspora is in Chicagoland, which is where you will find some Serbian restaurants. However, the meat might not taste the same, simply because it is a different soil and the type of production. NYC also has a couple of decent Serbian restaurants.
@PoJoTheBackPackerАй бұрын
Thanks for the tip, I’ll check them out when I’m in the area!

I have seen some comments from my fellow Serbians how we are not "that safe at all". Believe me, all that talk comes from children that want to be tough. Funny thing is that 99% of us Serbs were in that mood when growing up... 70% of us became just hardworking people connected to house, and 30% other became criminals, but they will never touch man for nothing. Everywhere you can find some "rotten apples", but generally speaking, you are all safe bro.
