Glory to God! I am an Orthodox Priest in the United States. This video is very respectful, and I appreciate the honest and humble attitude in which it is made. The question about the Most Pure Virgin, and why she is so prominently depicted can be answered in a number of ways. First, she was deemed worthy, among women, to bear God in her womb. In this way, she was exalted, and her womb became "more spacious than the heavens." She is also the Church's Mother. Again, because of Her humility, every generation regards Her as blessed, and the Icon declares this when our words fail! The Icon of Christ appearing to be "pulled" in two directions is the Icon of the Resurrection, Holy Pascha! He is shown ascending from hades, pulling Adam and Eve with Him by the wrists. This shows that they depended upon Him to deliver them from the shadows they had endured for so long. May God bless you! Thanks for the beautiful video!

Icons and frescos played a huge role in the spread of Christianity to the Balkans. Slavs who lived here in the 5th and 6th century were pagans, St Cyril and Methodius brought Christianity and with it literacy to the Slavs but even then, most people were illiterate. Icons and frescos depicting scenes from the Bible helped bring biblical stories to life and bring Slavs closer to Christ. St Cyril and Methodius created the cyrilic alphabet which we use in Serbia to this day. I highly recommend you read about them, their story is amazing.

The last church you've shown was built in a different architectural style. It is a Baroque church while St. Sava Temple and the rest are following the Byzantian canon. The Patriarchate, where the Patriarch now resides, is actually the building right across the street. During the Middle Ages, Serbia developed a somewhat unique architectural style which blended the influences from the East and West and this is what you can see in most of the new churches that are now built. St. Marko's church is a copy of the church of the Gracanica monastery which is one of the few Serbian medieval churches that displays the gothic elements of the time. Finally, the image of Christ Pantocrator, the almighty ruler, will be shown in the central dome, the highest point of the world which the church is a representation of.

We don't have a "conflicted history" at all but have been simply fending off the collonisers since always and are proud to say even today, being devastated, robbed, humiliated, collonised and on our knees that we've seen many an empire collapse on our soil. The trouble is that the collonisers are still ruling the world, thus the official historical narrative is being forged to justify the collonial actions, outrageously crowned as "culture", while our history and authentic culture have been denied and are definitely not mentioned nor studied abroad. Take for example that what's left of today's Serbia doesn't have any sea access (as the Anglo-Saxons and Vatican, heavily meddling in Serbian affairs since the Jerusalem and Constantinople raids to the present days, have decided during the WW2, when they had simultaneously throned Tito in 1943, on the very day of the Teheran's new world's division conference) and ask yourselves how is it possible that a newly to continent restricted nation still has the world's best waterpolo teams, ancient domestic common names for every sea creature that had ever lived in the Adriatic Sea, every boat part and tool imaginable etc, while the "Croatians", "Bulgarians", "Albanians", "Turks" etc. to whom our coasts have been granted by the Anglo-Saxons, for being more fluid, collaborative and malleable, have not. Just a small example to start you freaking out on what's considered to be an official history of the world.
@ExpatsInTheMaking2 ай бұрын
I totally agree that you should be proud of your history and nation! Of course, "history is written by the victors" is both unfair and the true nature of things. And I totally agree about my own ignorance, and 99% of the world's ignorance regarding Balkan history. But what is taught in schools is limited and, for example, in the USA first nations history is much more applicable because it explains our relations with one of the more important ethnic groups. Personally, I think it's unreasonable to think people from far away would be educated about your history unless they go out of their way to learn it. I'm invested in doing so because I will live here for a time but it would be better to respect others' ignorance and help educate them. Of course, you should expect others to be respectful and understanding of their lack of knowledge, and I certainly hope that's how I come across. Secondly, you say it's not conflicted but then list generalizations about a dozen deep conflicts spanning centuries. That's exactly what I mean when I say conflicted, a history covered with conflict. Thank you for the comment! And I am genuinely interested in how you could look at your history and see it as conflict free.
@awkwardowl88352 ай бұрын
@ExpatsInTheMaking Easily: what you name as "conflicting history" is the history of fending the collonisers off and the collonisers do not get the right to name the collonial "game" as something else, especially not as "culture", since the culture is a valuation of the positive achievements for the mankind, while any collonial war, weather classical or contemporary, the "special", soft power one, was never undertaken having culture in mind, but plain robbery. Hope that's clear. When the retired CIA officers were flying to Croatia, Bosnia or Kosovo and Metochia, they were deliberately misinformed by Pentagon that they were fighting for freedom. It would be the American citizens' duty to question their own war-machine about the war- propaganda.The same attitude was driving the Hubsburgs to illegally annex Bosnia, simultaneously with the Serbian liberation from the Turks, all while being in greatest love with the Turks in Bosphorus as well as the Brits, both competing to be the first to reach the Persian oil. Engeneering the new "nations" on Serbian soil, along with bribing the local collaborators, was and still is an old collonial strategy traceable back to the Romans, the "divide et impera" one. For example, the modern Pakistanies are still Indians more than it pleases Brits. Would you blame the population of the robbed countries for the induced massacres or the Brits? Do you see any difference today in Ukraine? If not still then soon enough, when the weaponry supply bills reach the average American tax-payer. As for the "history being written by the victors", bare in mind that the Serbs were always actively in the team of the Allies, unlike the majority of the European governments, unaware that the Allies were always playing a double game, supporting the Turks, the Hubsburgs and later the nazi war-machine. Anyway, gullible or not but always being allied with the Allies, we consider ourselves the victors, too, who have the right at least on our authentic unforged documented history. We do not reduce nor devide the population of the world to the major and minor ones, although what the West calls the "Slavs" and the authentic name is the Serbs have always been worryingly noumerous for the West.

That's terrible and sickening. One of the major reasons I don't live in the USA is that I don't approve of my tax money being spent the way it is. I think it's massively important to have a strong military but I'm generally critical of the way we've used it and our involvement here was one of the first times in my life I remember having reservations. I was young but even then it seemed totally different than invading Iraq when they invaded Kuwait.

Did you visit Crypt under the Saint Sava temple, it's incredible. Stairs to the crypt are left from the main entrance. Saint Mark's Church will only get frescoes all over the walls, it is still unfinished although built long ago.

I haven't made it into the crypt yet! I've seen stairs but every time I've been there's a rope across them so I thought I was at the wrong time. Interesting about St Marks, hopefully I'll get a chance to see it when it's finished as well!

The Virgin Mary, also known as the Theotokos or “Mother of God,” holds a central place in the hearts and devotion of Orthodox Christians. To understand why she is so important, it is necessary to delve into the teachings and beliefs of Orthodoxy. First and foremost, Orthodox Christians believe in the Incarnation, which is the belief that God became human in the person of Jesus Christ. This is an essential aspect of Orthodox theology, as it affirms the belief that God fully entered into human experience in order to redeem and restore humanity. The Virgin Mary played a crucial role in the Incarnation, as she was the one chosen by God to be the mother of Jesus. This means that she was not just a vessel for the conception and birth of Jesus, but rather a fully human and fully divine being. She is therefore seen as a crucial figure in the salvation history of the Orthodox Church, as she played a key role in the redemption of humanity through her son, Jesus Christ. In addition to her role in the Incarnation, the Virgin Mary is also revered for her holiness and her devotion to God. She is seen as an example of what it means to fully embrace one’s faith and to live a life dedicated to God. She is often depicted as the “new Eve,” as she is seen as reversing the sin of the first woman and becoming a model of obedient faith. The Virgin Mary is also a source of comfort and intercession for Orthodox Christians. She is seen as a mother figure who is always ready to listen and to offer her maternal love and protection. Many Orthodox believers turn to her in times of need, asking for her intercession before God on their behalf. Finally, the Virgin Mary is also revered for her role in the Church. She is seen as a model for the Church itself, as she exemplified the virtues of humility, obedience, and faith. She is also seen as a symbol of the Church’s unity, as she is the mother of all believers and is therefore a unifying figure for the Orthodox Church. The Virgin Mary holds a central place in the hearts and devotion of Orthodox Christians due to her role in the Incarnation, her holiness and devotion to God, her role as a source of comfort and intercession, and her role in the Church. She is a deeply revered and beloved figure within Orthodoxy, and her influence and importance cannot be overstated.

Thank you so much! As a Protestant Christian, our beliefs about Mary are similar with two main differences. One of the crucial pieces of our separation from the Catholic church was the priesthood of the believer and I think that's why Catholics and Orthodox christians view the saints so differently from us, especially the Virgin Mary. And the second difference is that we don't view her as Divine the way Christ was Divine but rather saved by His grace, like the rest of us. Albeit, an incredible example for us to follow. Certainly, she has one of the strongest stories of faith in the Bible. I don't mean to say one form of belief is right or higher at all. I simply believe God speaks to us all in the way we need Him and that's why it's so beneficial to understand others' form of faith. Thank you so much for sharing!

@@ExpatsInTheMaking We don't see her divine as Christ. She is a human. But as a human that carried a God she is greater than any angels. She is revered.

@@ExpatsInTheMaking Oh that is nice that you did explore Belgrade! I didn't explore your channel, so I didn't see those videos. Just stumbled upon this video. There is a nature reserve Obedska bara nearby (you need a car) but I guess this time of year is not perfect for that. There is also Bojčinska šuma cottage (also a little bit outside of the city), they have regular music nights with nice dinner there. You have surely visited Košutnjak park forest? If you like biking you have a nice route connecting Dorćol riverbank (25. maj) all the way to New Belgrade riversides via Ada bridge (i love that route). If you like real Italian pizza go to Bosiljak pizza place in Zemun, the best pizza for sure! Zemun park iz nearby. Cheers!

8:11 The emperor Dusan the Mighty. It was one of the most powerful rulers in the Middle Ages. In his time, Serbia had access to three sees.
@ExpatsInTheMaking2 ай бұрын
Awesome, thanks for sharing! I'm learning a lot about Serbian history and am obviously a novice. It seems to me, so far, there are two major periods of Serbian Empire before the world wars, in the middle ages and in the 19th century. He must have been at the height of the first one? Am I missing anything major in saying that? (I ask because I almost certainly am... 🤦♂️)
@MacakPodSIjemom2 ай бұрын
@@ExpatsInTheMaking Yes, you are correct, the rule of Emperor Dušan (Car Dušan) is considered the peak of Serbian statehood in the middle ages, obviously. But, his empire wasn't really a Serbian state, it was a multinational (as empires usually are) state, he called him self "the Emperor of Serbs, Greeks, etc.", because he intended to replace Byzantine Empire as the main Christian power in this part of the world. After his death the empire quickly disintegrated.
@dekipet2 ай бұрын
@@MacakPodSIjemom Of course it was a Serbian state. The ruler was a Serb, the ruling establishment was Serbs, etc. The Empire was multinational as it spanned across other nations. But, in that time Greeks, Bulgarians, etc, weren't asked for anything. Unfortunately, after his sudden death, everything collapsed. @ExpatsInTheMaking There was no second Empire. The Kingdom of Yugoslavia was a wrong thing Serbs created. It shouldn't ever been created and we made three of Yugoslavia's. The time is a circle. Who knows, there might be a second Empire right around the corner.

If Tsar Dusan had lived longer, if his enemies had not poisoned him, the Turks would never have set foot on the Balkans on the way to Vienna, and the Serbs would have lived in one big state, not like today🇷🇸☦️

@ExpatsInTheMaking Yes, we are such a meat lovers all year around so at least for our fasts (4 major ones during the year, the most strict one is for Eastern) we have these vegan season to detox a bit ( I think this decision is very clever from our Church 🤣🤣🤣).

About the icon that starts at 10:00,when you say Jesus is pulled left and right by some people,actually means: The icon of the Resurrection, also known as “Christ’s Descent into Hades” and “the Anastasis”, is the icon of Easter, celebrating Jesus’ triumph over death. The icon depicts Jesus Christ descending into Hades and pulling Adam and Eve from the tombs, symbolizing His victory back to the very beginning of mankind. The two golden bars under Jesus’ feet (note that His feet and hands still carry the signs of His crucifixion) are the gates of Hades which He has broken open. On the left of the icon, we see David and Solomon, representing those who died before Jesus’ crucifixion, waiting patiently in Hades for their Messiah. On the right side of the icon, we see Abel as a shepherd, the first person to die as a result of the Fall, as well as Saint John the Baptist. In the darkness below, keys, locks & chains symbolize that He has entered and conquered both death and Hades.

@@ExpatsInTheMaking Also, note that Jesus is grabbing Adam and Eve by their wrists (not their hands), meaning He does all the work, humanity is helpless to save itself without the grace of God.
