How to make history?.... I was a 5 yr old little girl back in the 70's and was fishing... No one EVER even remotely made me feel like I couldn't pick up a fishing pole. This is very strange rhetoric... Women/Females in general are simply not as interested in fishing as men /males are... Obviously there are those who are but they're more of an exception than the rule.... There has never been some sort of oppression of females in fishing and I'm unaware or any little girl who ever thought, "Oh, I can't be a fisherman because I'm a girl".... (fisherwoman for you soft, politically correct types) Honestly, as a woman who was once also a little girl, I find this mentality absolutely overdramatic and on some ghost of a narrative... (aka something that doesn't exist)

I hope I can clear this up a little - Referring to making history as in, competitive fishing. there has never been a female that has qualified for the bassmaster classic through the opens, or ever made a professional tour (Bassmaster Elites or MLF) The entire field of professional anglers is made up of men, and most of the field in the opens categories, is also comprised of men. I have NEVER been a person who has made any of that a focal point in my message, or career. I have NEVER said females are oppressed, so I am not sure where that is coming from, I honestly feel like it is the exact opposite of oppressed, but the majority of women are intimated to compete at the highest level because as of yet, no one has succeeded. I believe it is a numbers game and myself and many others would love to see the day a woman breaks through and qualifies for the professional tour. Again, this has very little to do with recreational fishing and nothing to do with feeling oppressed. Even if there have been obstacles, I have never been one to even focus on obstacles, I focus on goals.

I have been thinking about doing the opens as a boater and the same emotions run through me and knowing that a lot of Anglers are setting aside a lot more than I think I can because they live and eat and breathe fishing but we can't think like that, because no matter what you love to fish and that's all that is needed. Don't worry about anything else except what you're putting into it, because whatever you do, it will be your best because that's what you do... that's what gals like us do. Don't rush, don't overthink it. Just fish the way you know how to do it and show the world who you are... that's all that is needed to walk the stage. Hopefully, I can join you up there one day!

First of all I would like to congratulate you on your new adventure in the Bassmaster world! I was a woman angler during the late 90s and early 2000s, and we were fortunate to have an organization dedicated to women anglers. I recently watched a Dave Mercer podcast where you were one of the guests speakers. You made the statement that you had seen magazine photos of past women fisherman, and they were very beautiful, but ability was what was needed. Everyone has an opinion on the subject, but we as lady anglers took our position very serious. I myself was sponsored by Ranger boats and Mercury Outboards. I’m not suggesting you were being vindictive but maybe just misinformed. If you look into the history of women anglers, Chris Houston, Penny Berryman, Burma Thomas, which was my best friend, and I can name others, you will fine they were the pioneers in the sport of women anglers.

I have never understood why women have not been fishing the BM series. Fishing has nothing to do with sex or physical strength. Kristine, I was one of the groundbreakers of female military service. You have been a mentor for me to strive to emulate with my kayak fishing. I just switched to freshwater last year and have signed up for my first CPR KBF tournament for May. You are a warrior. You can do it.

I couldn’t live without a bass boat. Got my first at 15. I put about 500 hours of work on it that winter, and about 9k$ total. Had to get my dad to haul me to tournaments and fishing trips. He got me an old truck when I turned 16 (I had to pay the gas, insurance, and maintenance) because he was sick of driving me to tournaments. Ever since Ive had a bass boat and have competed. I just bought a Skeeter FXR21 Apex, and have my first tournament coming up. Can’t wait. Good luck, but be prepared to be destroyed by the field in your first season. I do both Boat and Kayak tournaments, and they are a very different skill. Everyone is capable of covering so much more water, getting to holes fast becomes incredibly important.
